Camryn Grimes At Work
When Grimes isn’t occupying the teen spot in Genoa City’s powerhouse Newman family, she’s adding entries to an already impressive acting portfolio. “I just went for MEDIUM and then went for ER and got them both,” the 15-year-old actress reveals.
Her turns on the two popular NBC series aired in February. “I didn’t even know they were going to run two weeks in a row. I was like, ‘Whoa!'”
“MEDIUM was the first prime-time thing I’ve ever done,” says Grimes, who has been playing Cassie since she was seven. “That was really exciting for me. It was a whole different thing. You shoot from 30 different angles 30 times and they want it different ways. The best thing about here [at Y&R] is it’s three takes and it’s over! (laughs)”
When it comes to co-star Patricia Arquette, who plays the title “medium,” Grimes admits that art was imitating life just a little too closely. “[She] was really nice but when she was doing it, she kind of scared me.”
Arquette’s Allison DuBois warned Grimes’ character, “He will come to your house and he will rape you!” and the ominous words stayed with the actress off the set. “I was freaked out. I would be terrified [if someone said that to me]. The next day, my friends were like, ‘You’re a crazy woman!'”
Thankfully, her turn on ER involved no such scares and no emergency surgery. SEX AND THE CITY’s Cynthia Nixon played her mother and Grimes raves, “[she] was amazing and so nice.”
“ER was extra fun because my uncle (Scott Grimes) is on it. He plays Dr. Morris, the one who always screws up, the one you love to hate (laughs).”
And ER isn’t the only family affair for these two. Actor/musician Grimes “just came out with an album,” informs his proud niece. “It’s taken off more on the East Coast. It’s rock but he’s got a great unique sound. I’m in the video for ‘Sunset Blvd.’ It’s just one shot, but it was so fun. I got to dress up like a hobo.”
Looking forward to what’s next, Grimes says, “I know this sounds like a step down from ER but I would love to be on a Disney Channel or Nickelodeon series. It just looks so fun and weird.”
And speaking of weird, Grimes’ viewing habits even led to a freak coincidence that does MEDIUM proud — discovering that Y&R co-star Christel Khalil (Lily) does some moonlighting of her own. Says the actress, “I saw W.I.T.C.H and it was so funny. I was watching [the cartoon] going, ‘That voice is so familiar. Oh my gosh! That’s Christel’s voice!'”
Don’t worry, Camryn Grimes may be young, restless, and itching for new opportunities, but she’s not going anywhere — yet.
“This is my home,” assures Grimes about Y&R, “but I love doing things out of here. I love meeting new people.”
