B&B: Marriages Of Inconvenience
The Couple: Sally and Clarke
The Year: 1990
The Setup: In all fairness, Clarke was seduced into marrying the much-older Sally with a sweet offer: half of her fashion company if he stayed true to their vows for two years.
The Problems: The dashing designer quickly cheated with Julie, but Sal forgave him when she discovered that she was pregnant. He insisted on an abortion; she refused and their son, C.J., later made his debut.
The Last Straw: When Clarke erroneously thought he’d met the two-year deadline, he jumped in bed with Kristen. Their encounter was caught on tape and Sally was willing to look the other way again, but when he ordered her to change their son’s name, she torched her hubby’s contract and threw him out.The Couple: Brooke and Grant
The Year: 1997
The Setup: Brooke was miffed when her lover, Ridge, proposed to Taylor, so Brooke popped the question to Grant. She gambled that Ridge would come to his senses and stop the wedding. He didn’t and Brooke sailed off with Grant; they were married at sea.
The Problems: Brooke appointed Grant to be the CEO of Forrester Creations and he started to clash with employees over his new office policies. One evening, he was shot in his office and lied that Ridge had pulled the trigger. Grant was protecting the real shooter (Brooke’s disturbed son, Rick), so he convinced the court to give Ridge probation.
The Last Straw: Grant and Brooke discovered that the boat captain who officiated at their ceremony was a fraud, thus invalidating the union. Grant immediately wanted to do it again for real, but Brooke decided not to.
The Couple: Sheila and James
The Year: 1997
The Setup: James ended his happy marriage to Maggie so he could wed Sheila, the mother of his child. But he had no intention of going through with the vows; it was just his scheme to prove she was an unfit mother so he could win sole custody of their daughter. When the proof went poof, James reluctantly said, “I do.”
The Problems: Sheila discovered the ruse and tried to commit suicide on the first night of their honeymoon. She survived and a guilt-ridden James stayed by her side. He then lost his license to practice psychiatry for tying the knot with a former patient.
The Last Straw: Sheila once again lost her grip on mental stability. She threatened her spouse’s peers as well as Stephanie’s grandson. When Sheila was arrested for parole violation, she escaped and skipped town with baby Mary (who eventually returned with a new name: Erica). The Couple: Macy and Thorne
The Year: 2000
The Setup: Macy and Thorne decided to give marriage a third try, but during their engagement, he fell in love with Brooke. When Thorne mistakenly thought that Brooke had reconciled with Ridge, he impulsively eloped with Macy. Afterware, he was horrified to learn that Brooke was never unfaithful.
The Problems: Brooke kept throwing herself at vulnerable Thorne, and Macy could detect a rift in her marriage. Mounting insecurity pushed Macy, a recovering alcoholic, off the wagon.
The Last Straw: With Brooke as a passenger, an emotional Macy drove her car into a tanker truck and was presumed killed in the resulting explosion (she showed up alive two years later). Brooke simply used up one of her nine lives.
The Couple: Brooke and Thorne
The Year: 2001
The Setup:Thorne wasn’t the grieving widower for long. Mere months after Macy’s “death,” he and Brooke got hitched — with Stephanie’s blessing.
The Problems: We can only assume that the first few months were wedded bliss off-camera as Thorne got less and less airtime. But obviously, all was not well because…
The Last Straw: Months before their first anniversary, Thorne overheard Brooke confess that Ridge was still her true love. A devastated Thorne confronted his wife, then filed for an annulment.
