AMC’s Shannon Kane Bags an American Gigolo

Comments

Up until recently, we’ve only seen ALL MY CHILDREN’s Shannon Kane (Natalia) in police blues. Now that Natalia’s gone undercover as a Fusion model, maybe that will change. In the meantime, Kane’s already taken it all off with co-star Richard Gere in the film Brooklyn’s Finest, which opened earlier this month. Kane talks about her dual roles.Soap Opera Weekly: Will Natalia’s stint as a model heat up her relationship with Brot?

Shannon Kane: I think the attraction will [deepen]. Initially, Brot and Natalia met when Natalia was very young. So [the modeling] is opening up a new can of worms in terms of him seeing another side of her, and having an actual [physical] attraction to her…as opposed to just the competitive back-and-forth flirtation.

Weekly: They’ve been taking the relationship of Brot and Natalia very slowly, even for a soap. Is it going to heat up after this? What would you like to see happen?

Kane: I’m not sure if it’s gonna heat up. I know that I do have some stuff coming up where Brot does try to get close, but Natalia [repeats] the same kind of pattern that she’s shown in the past. Personally, I’d like to see a relationship develop, but I think it would be interesting to have it kind of be like a love triangle —her being caught up between [men], just to step up Brot’s game, so he can’t be so comfortable anymore.

Weekly: But there’s no question about who you’re with in Brooklyn’s Finest. You play Richard Gere’s love interest, right?

Kane: Yeah. A Puerto Rican hooker. She’s out there. It’s very intense; that was the joy of taking the role of Chantel. Even though she is surrounded by this darkness and [her] raunchy lifestyle, she [has] a certain tenderness, as well, and also [brings] a little comedic relief, so it was a pleasure playing that role — and to be able to show that lots of these [prostitutes] are just regular women who’ve had their dreams deferred. It was nice to portray her as a [real] woman.

Weekly: What was it like to work with Gere?

Kane: It was amazing. It was an extraordinary experience. He’s very accepting. Very patient. And he’s also a Buddhist. So, like, when he was in the makeup chair, he would always have his legs crossed and his eyes closed. He’s a very centered man, and that’s the kind of energy that he [carries] around him. So it was a cool, very calm and comfortable atmosphere.

Weekly: And filming the love scene went smoothly?

Kane: Yes. Originally, I was intimidated, especially having to go topless. But it was all a part of getting to know this character, and once I [went to] work with Richard, I just transformed [when] I shot the scene. It was very second nature for me.

Weekly: And how was attending the New York premiere with Gere, Wesley Snipes and Don Cheadle?

Kane: Awesome! It was the first time that I had seen Richard since I had shot the film. So it was kind of like a reunion — once you work with people on any project, they become kind of a family for you. It was a really cool experience.
