10 Things You Need To Know About Mallet Page 2
6) The dynamic duo’s next assignment dealt with bringing down Jenna, a jewel thief. Harley went undercover as Jenna’s assistant, while Mallet played up the sexual tension between him and the crook. Jenna fell for Mallet, but when she tried to get them to have sex in a hotel room, Harley pulled the fire alarm so Mallet could escape. When Jenna learned of Mallet and Harley’s true relationship, she planted stolen jewels on Harley, who was then arrested. But the famed 1992 blackout stopped Jenna’s escape, and Harley and Mallet were able to clear Cooper’s name.
7) One thing you have to realize about Mallet is that he is stubborn, very stubborn. Case in point, in 1992, Mallet was caught in a car-bomb explosion, which rendered him unable to walk or hear. Although they had previously nixed cohabiting together, Harley moved in with Mallet to care for him. Harley gave Mallet a hearing-assistance dog, Xyla, but things were not good with the lovebirds. When Mallet learned that the accident had left him impotent, he pushed Harley away — and refused to tell her why. Not wanting to be a burden, Mallet made plans to leave, but Harley persuaded him to stay. It was a pretty powerful argument because Mallet, um, got his groove back, and they made love. It took him awhile to open up to Harley about a proposed surgery that would help him walk, and even then it was hard to admit that the procedure might leave him sterile. Harley vowed to stay by his side, no matter what, and the two got engaged.
8) In 1993, Mallet and Harley traveled to Washington, D.C., to give Xyla back to her owner. While on the trip, they visited the Vietnam Memorial, and Harley was shocked not to find the name of her father (a presumed-dead vet) on the wall. What do you know? Not even a month later, Harley’s dad, Buzz, came to town — although he kept his identity a secret. Mallet was instrumental in bringing Buzz’s true relation to the Coopers to light. In May, 1993, Mallet finally got Buzz to tell Frank and Harley everything and was there to pick up the pieces when the siblings wanted nothing to do with their dad.
9) Although much of Mallet’s run in Springfield was spent with Harley, his first Cooper pal was actually Frank. The two men bonded and quickly became best friends. In 1991, they started a detective agency together, although Mallet eventually left when he trained the police recruits. When Marina was born on May 8, 1993, Mallet was named the child’s godfather.
10) Sure, you’ve heard of surprise birthday parties, but Mallet and Harley actually had a surprise wedding. In 1993, they decided to elope at City Hall, but after a series of mishaps, they didn’t make it and the two decided to put off the wedding until family and friends could be by their sides. In September, 1993, Buzz decided to throw surprise nuptials for the couple. With help of Eleni, Frank, Nadine, Mindy and others, Mallet and Harley were lured to the courthouse. Once there, they presented the couple with appropriate attire (although Harley had on her black cop shoes) and they were pronounced husband and wife. Mallet and Harley then left to honeymoon in the Florida Keys. They decided to set up house there and it wasn’t until Harley returned to Springfield in 1997 that the audience learned there was trouble in paradise: Mallet had had an affair and they were going to get a divorce.
