10 Things You Need To Know About Mallet

Comments

1) Mallet recently came back to town in the wake of Phillip’s death. Ironically, Spaulding’s demise was the same thing that brought Mallet to Springfield in 1990. Phillip was being framed for Neil’s death and, with Rick and Beth’s help, faked his own death. The DA’s office wanted to investigate, but wanted an unbiased eye. They hired Mallet to do some digging. He quickly deduced that Phillip was very much alive, so he posed as a writer in order to ingratiate himself into Phillip’s inner circle. He really bonded with Mindy, who was the only Musketeer who didn’t know that Phillip was alive. When Phillip made a brief appearance at Cedars after his daughter, Lizzie, was born, Mallet booked him for murder. Phillip made Mallet see that he was the innocent party. Together, the men nabbed the real killer — Gary.
2) A.C. Mallet is actually not his real name. He was formerly known as Tony Camaletti, a New York cop who investigated a mobster named Vizzini. Camaletti fell in love with Vizzini’s daughter, Francesca, but before they could elope, she was presumed dead in a hit that was meant for him. Wanting to get off the mob’s radar, Camaletti changed his name to A.C. Mallet. In 1991, he discovered that Francesca was alive. They reconnected and wanted to tie the knot, but Francesca wed an Italian doctor (a marriage that her father arranged) in order to ensure that Vizzini would leave Mallet alone.
3) Speaking of family, Mallet has one sister, Julie, who later went a little crazy (but that’s another story). In 1991, Mallet and Mindy traveled to New York City to stop Francesca’s wedding. They failed, but Mallet reconnected with Julie, and she decided to tag along when they returned to Springfield. Mallet had a hard time when Julie dated Roger’s son, Hart, because Roger had caused Mallet grief with that whole mob thing. In general, Mallet was a protective older brother and always stood by Julie, especially when her romances failed (which was often). And here’s a bit of trivia to impress your GL friends: Mira Sorvino was a temporary replacement for Jocelyn Seagrave
4) In another ironic twist, Mallet helped motivate Harley to become a cop. Upset with police corruption, among other things, Harley toyed with the idea of joining the force. When she told Mallet the idea, he laughed in her face. That very day, Harley signed up with the academy, in part to show Mallet that she could do it. As luck (well, Ross) would have it, Mallet was tapped to be the rookie’s instructor. Harley bickered constantly with Mallet, who was extra-tough on recruit Cooper. Harley’s training was soon put to the test when she was threatened by a dirty cop who she had once exposed. Mallet’s admiration of her fine police skills meant one thing: The two were falling for each other.
5) What really brought Mallet and Harley together was the 1991-92 mystery surrounding Jean Weatherill. Harley thought Daniel St. John was the culprit; Mallet wasn’t sure. When Harley disobeyed orders, Mallet had to suspend her from the force. Harley refused to give up, and in 1992, she tailed Daniel and Holly to the Bauer cabin, where Daniel locked her in the freezing cold cellar. Mallet came to Harley’s rescue and she admitted that she was in love with him. (This scene, which first aired in February, 1992, was the subject of the recent re-created flashback with the new actor, Robert Bogue.)
