daughter Danielle).... Anton turned out to be Dimitri’s son.... Adam
and Gloria’s prematurely born daughter, Anna Claire, didn’t survive,
and Erica’s rapist/Kendall’s bio dad, Richard Fields, took his final
breath.... Julia was raped by Louie, and fell for Noah.... When Kendall
falsely accused Dimitri of rape, Erica stabbed her hubby.... With a
new face and an alias (Jane Cox), Janet returned to town and nearly
wed Trevor, but was busted by Harold the Dog.... A massive tornado
blew through Pine Valley.... The show took home the Daytime Emmy
for Outstanding Drama.
Robin Christopher was ANOTHER WORLD’s new
Lorna after Alicia Coppola left; Carmen Duncan (Iris)
also departed, and Jensen Buchanan (Vicky) took a
break.... Behind the scenes, Carolyn Culliton was in
as head writer, replacing Peggy Sloane, and the show
marked its 30th anniversary.... Rachel wed Carl (and
Iris was shipped off to jail for shooting the groom
after Evan replaced the blanks with real bullets); Jake
remarried Paulina; and Amanda became Mrs. Grant
Harrison.... To protect Kirkland from bio dad Grant,
Vicky gave the boy to Jake and Paulina.... Cass and
Frankie welcomed a daughter, Charlie, and he was
diagnosed as bipolar.... Donna hooked up with much younger
Matt.
AS THE WORLD TURNS shed multiple cast
members, writing out Lisa Brown (Iva), Benjamin
Hendrickson (Hal), Tamara Tunie (Jessica),
Hayley Barr (Courtney), Terry Lester (Royce) and
Scott Bryce (Craig); Glynnis O’Connor was out
when Ellen Dolan returned to the role of Margo;
Margaret Reed (Shannon) came back; Shawn
Christian made his daytime debut as Mike, and
Claire Bloom came aboard as psycho Orlena,
while future American Pie star Jason Biggs was
cast as Julie’s teen son, Pete.... Susan gave
birth to Alison from an egg donated by her other
daughter, Emily.... Hal and Barbara broke
up; Rosanna and Mike got together....
Shannon and Duncan, and Caleb and Julie,
took second shots at marriage; Cal and
Connor also got hitched.... Lily slept with
Holden, but stayed married to Damian;
she learned she was pregnant.... John was
diagnosed with colon cancer.

Carey passed away, so the show scripted the on-air death
of his beloved character, Horton patriarch Tom. Kristian
Alfonso returned as Hope (who was originally thought to
be Gina); Roark Critchlow debuted as the new Mike; Tanya
Boyd was in as Celeste; Jack was recast with Mark Valley;
and Wayne Northrop left as Roman.... Kristen and Tony
married.... John learned that he, not Roman, was Belle’s
bio dad; Kate came clean about being the long-lost mother
of Austin and Billie; Lucas discovered that Bill Horton
was his dad; and Vivian had Kate and Victor’s embryo
implanted into her.... Stefano was presumed dead via
drowning.... Jack and Jennifer divorced; so did Roman
and Marlena.... Alan raped Sami.... Billie was exonerated
of Curtis’s murder (Stefano was revealed as his accidental
killer).... Unaware of her true identity, Jack bedded
Jen’s mom, Laura, while Jen took up with Peter....
Bo and Billie’s courtship was challenged by “Gina’s”
arrival.... The show cleaned up at the Soap Opera Digest
Awards, with wins including Favorite Show, Lead Actor
Robert Kelker-Kelly (Bo), Hottest Male Star Drake
Hogestyn (John), Hottest Female Star Melissa Reeves

Lulu was born to Luke and Laura.... Mac and Felicia’s
wedding was postponed after Ryan crashed the ceremony
wielding a bomb. When Maxie fell ill with Kawasaki
syndrome, Felicia fell into bed with Frisco.... Monica was
diagnosed with breast cancer.... Lucy hosted the first
Nurses’ Ball.... Bobbie and Tony’s little girl, B.J., was
left brain-dead when her school bus crashed. Her heart
saved Maxie’s life.... Ned lost his bigamy virginity, marrying
Katherine and Lois; Paul wed Jenny; and Jagger and
Karen tied the knot.... Luke killed Frank Smith in Puerto
Rico.... Brenda and Sonny, Robin and Stone, and Kevin
and Lucy fell in love.... Edward was revealed to be the
father of Mary Mae’s son, Bradley, and Justus’s grandfather,
and Karen realized that Scotty was her bio dad.
GUIDING LIGHT hired Ron Raines as the
new Alan; Cynthia Watros debuted as Annie;
Kurt McKinney came aboard as Matt; and
Morgan Englund (Dylan) and Fiona Hutchison
(Jenna) wrapped up.... Blake and Ross made
it official, as did Nick and Mindy.... Buzz and
Jenna welcomed son Coop.... Buzz and
Nadine eloped.... Vanessa and Matt fell in
love.... Roger and Holly reconciled, and Billy
went to jail for shooting Mr. Thorpe.... Dylan
was blinded in an accident.... Ed asked Eve
to marry him.... Nancy Curlee departed her
role on GL’s head-writing team and the new
team consisted of Stephen Demorest, Patrick
Mulcahey, Nancy Williams Watt, Millee
Taggart and Sheri Anderson.... The show won
three top prizes at the Daytime Emmys: Lead
Actor for Michael Zaslow (Roger), Supporting
Actor for Justin Deas (Buzz) and Younger
Actress for Melissa Hayden (Bridget), who
was also named Younger Lead Actress at
the Digest Awards, where Casting Director Betty Rea was honored with the
Editors’ Award.
LOVING got a new executive producer,
Jean Dadario Burke, who succeeded
JoAnn Emmerich, while Agnes Nixon
stepped down as head writer, replaced
by Addie Walsh and Laurie McCarthy,
and Jane Elliot (GH’s Tracy) signed
on as a producer.... Jessica Collins
quit as Dinah Lee, who was recast
with Elizabeth Mitchell, and Wesley
Addy and Augusta Dabney returned
as Cabot and Isabelle.... Ally married
Casey, who got hooked on drugs; and
Ava and Alex (despite Egypt’s best
efforts to foil them) said, “I do” again....
Cabot returned from the dead.
Future prime-time stars Nathan Fillion
(Joey) and Hayden Panettiere (Sarah)
debuted on ONE LIFE TO LIVE, which also
introduced Timothy D. Stickney (R.J.),
Krista Tesreau, who replaced Karen Witter
as Tina, and Tuc Watkins (David). Sheila
was recast with Stephanie Williams, fresh
from playing GH’s Simone; she replaced
Valarie Pettiford. Reiko Aylesworth
(Rebecca), Christopher Cousins (Cain),
Kirk Geiger (Kevin), Sean Moynihan
(Powell) and Casper Van Dien (Ty) exited....
The show had a banner year at the
Daytime Emmys, taking home trophies
for Lead Actress Hillary B. Smith (Nora),
Supporting Actress Susan Haskell (Marty),
Younger Actor Roger Howarth (Todd,
now GH’s Franco) and Writing.... Susan
Bedsow Horgan was named EP when Linda Gottlieb stepped
down.... Todd was pardoned after rescuing Marty, C.J. and Jessica from
a car crash.... Alex and Asa staged an Egyptian-themed wedding, and Viki
wed Sloan.... Max’s gambling addiction took a toll on his marriage to Luna....
Dorian hit the sheets with Joey and was arrested for Victor Lord’s murder....
Tina’s marriage to Cain was invalid; she fell for David Vickers, who tried to
pass himself off as Victor’s illegitimate son and heir.... Cassie and Andrew
took in abandoned baby River.... Blair dated Cord, but impulsively slept with
unlikely pal Todd.
Y&R saw an influx of future superstars, with Sharon Case (Sharon),
Shemar Moore (Malcolm), Joshua Morrow (Nick) and Michelle Stafford
(Phyllis, now GH’s Nina) all arriving in Genoa City.
Vivica A. Fox (Stephanie) and Diana Barton (Mari-Jo)
also debuted, while Quinn Redeker departed as Rex,
who was shot dead by con man Norman.... Jack met
his adult son by Luan, Keemo.... John and Jill split....
Vows were exchanged by Victor and Hope, Ashley
and Blade, Cole and Victoria, and Nina and Ryan....
Nick and Sharon’s romance began.... Drucilla had
sex with Malcolm while under the influence of cold
meds.... Phyllis drugged Danny and convinced him
that they’d hooked up.... The show aired a prime-time
episode that earned a whopping 10.2 Nielsen rating....
