Chandler Massey and Freddie Smith Dish About Their DAYS Exits

Chandler Massey (Will, DAYS) appeared on Freddie Smith’s (Sonny, DAYS) podcast, The Freddie & Alyssa Show, which Smith co-hosts with fiancée Alyssa Tabit, to discuss their imminent exits from Salem. The actors noted that they had been asked to return for six episodes after the show resumed production following the production hiatus it began late last year, leading to feelings of uncertainty about their contract status. “And then the scripts came,” Smith began. “We said, ‘Whatever the last script will give us an idea.’ “ When they read it, they discovered that their characters were being written out. Smith said, “I was like, ‘Oh, my God.’ “Yeah, not good,’ “ Massey chimed in. “We’re laughing about it now, but we were definitely not laughing,” Smith sighed. “It was just, like, super-shocking.” Nodded Massey, “I was stunned. I mean, I didn’t even know what to say. I mean, it just seems like our story was so… our story was unfinished and just happened so abruptly. And to find out through reading the scripts was a little weird, too.” The actors went on to explain that they sought out one of the show’s producers, who, according to Smith, “was just like, ‘It’s never good news to deliver,’ or something like [that].” Mused Massey, “I wonder if he felt bad that it was happening or that no one talked to us about it first or both,” adding that “ he handling of it was…. I don’t know, it kind of hurt my feelings a little bit, to be honest.” Opined Smith, “They created that atmosphere for the awkward convo by not just calling [to let us know in advance].” “It’s a business, obviously, and we can’t fault them for doing what they want to do, writing how they want to write,” Massey said. “But because these are people that we know and we worked with and we have a relationship with and really have a lot of love for, it just feels kind of s—ty, to be honest, to be dropped like that.” With some time to process the shocking news, both actors said they have made peace with it. “Now that I’ve accepted it, I’m excited to see what’s next,” Smith declared, adding, “We’d go back, but it also just depends on timing.” For his part, Massey shared, “I wasn’t ready for Will’s story to end. I feel like there was a lot of meat left on the bone and so many opportunities that now just won’t be realized…. No matter what I’ll always be proud of the work that we did, that, to this point, has been the greatest achievement of my life, crafting this story with you. I’ll always stay connected to the people who were touched by the story as well.” According to the actors, Smith’s final tape date was scheduled for today, February 14, while Massey would be wrapping up at a later date.
