THE 411
One of seven siblings, Dobson grew up in Jackson Heights, Queens. He served as an MP in the Army during the Vietnam era.
Dobson began studying theater with Sandy Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York. He made his stage debut in The Impossible Years. Soon, he began landing bit parts on prime-time series such as THE MOD SQAUD and CANNON. Upon signing a contract with Universal Studios in 1972, Dobson got his big break, when he landed the role of Detective Bobby Crocker on KOJAK. He later went on to star on TV in SHANNON, KNOTS LANDING (in which he played the popular character Mack MacKenzie) and F/X: THE SERIES.
Dobson's résumé is filled with television movies and numerous theater credits. He has co-starred in feature films with Gene Hackman, Barbra Streisand and Henry Fonda.
The veteran was chairman of the Salute to Hospitalized Veterans, a national program recognized in the White House by the first President George Bush and received the Silver Helmet Award.
Happily married for 40 years, Dobson is the father of three — Sean, Patrick and Mariah — and has one grandchild.
