The 411
As the eldest child of Sir John Mills (Oscar-winning actor) and Mary Hayley Bell (distinguished novelist), sister of Hayley Mills (the original Parent Trap) and Jonathan Mills (producer), Juliet Mills has had a career most only dream of. From books to theater, film to TV, Mills has done it all. Born in London, England, during what her father described as one of the worst air-raids of the war, Mills was quickly thrust into the glamourous world her parents had become accustomed to as public figures.
At 11 weeks of age, Juliet made her first appearance in films in the WWII naval drama In Which We Serve (1942), which starred her father, John, and one of her godparents, Noel Coward. From early on, she demonstrated a tremendous desire to become an actress. At age 7, she landed the role of Little Polly in The History of Mr. Polly (1949), after convincing her father that she'd be perfect for the part. Although Mills childhood may seem far from the norm, she did have the traditional English upbringing, with the usual education — boarding schools.
The young Mills continued to pursue her dreams of stardom into her teens as she auditioned for London's acclaimed Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Accepted immediately, Mills promptly declined the invitation in favor of a stage role in Five Finger Exercise (1958) in London, and later New York. After great success in the theater, she returned to cinema in 1961 playing Tansy in No, My Darling Daughter. Deciding to take up permanent residence in the U.S., she later went on to give memorable performances in flicks such as The Rare Breed (1965) and Avanti (1972). During this time, Mills also landed her first starring role in a television series, NANNY AND THE PROFESSOR (1970). Although the show was top rated, it was cancelled after only two seasons.
She hit the screen again in the often talked about Beyond the Door (1974), which was pulled from theaters because of its resemblance to The Exorcist (1973). Once again, Mills made a b-line for the theater in a touring production of The Elephant Man in 1980, where she met her now-husband Maxwell Caulfield. The fellow Brit dragged Mills to the top of a cliff overlooking California's Zuma Beach for a wedding at sunrise — 6:30 a.m. to be exact. In the coming years, the married Juliet spent most of her time doing guest appearances on television.
In 1999, Mills made another career leap, landing the role of Tabitha Lenox, Harmony's quirky 300-year-old witch on PASSIONS. Although the actress has fun with the role, she does not practice Tabitha's brand of magic in real life, but does believe strongly in ESP. Juliet currently resides in Los Angeles, near the PASSIONS studio, with her husband, where she is an avid runner.
