THE 411
Anne Jeffreys was born on Jan. 26, 1923 in Goldsboro, N.C. She caught the performing bug at an early age; at 10 she had her own radio show in her home state. Jeffreys was a junior model for John Robert Powers in New York, while studying for an operatic career. From there she was offered and accepted a role in Fun for the Money, a musical review in Hollywood. That led to her first major role in a film called I Married an Angel (1942), in which she co-starred with her idols Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy. She then went on to star in a number of different regional and Broadway roles, including Kiss Me, Kate. It was during her run in the show that she met her future husband, Robert Sterling. Columnists dubbed them "The Romance of Shubert Alley." They married in 1951 and had three sons. She has worked continuously since then, with her most recent role being Amanda Barrington on Port Charles, a role she originated on GENERAL HOSPITAL in 1984. Jeffreys says she owes everything to her mother, who started and managed her career. She received a Golden Globe Award nomination in 1973 for her work in the television series THE DELPHI BUREAU and has her very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Jeffreys was awarded the 1998 Living Legacy Award by the Women's International Center for her tireless work for charity.
The statuesque actress is also known for her timeless sense of style; she's been featured on Soap Opera Weekly's Dressed for Success pages countless times.
