From Jennifer Lenhart I am not doing this week's ATWT recaps which is why I have time to lodge my latest complaint: ATWT's new "scenelet" formula. Have you noticed how frustratingly short the scenes have become? They're about one script page long and they make recapping a nightmare, because the show just jumps around constantly from story to story. At first, I thought it was just me (and the scenes were just whizzing along faster than I realized) and then I thought we were supposed to find some connection in the scenelets between which we were
jumping back and forth. As it turns out, there's no reason that I can see, except maybe the show was afraid you'd change the channel during a storyline you hated, so they chopped up all the scenes and scattered them throughout each act so you can't fast-forward effectively. I get that they're trying to pick up the pace and heighten the tease factor, but the scenelet formula tends to unnaturally force drama where there is none (I can't imagine it's any easier on the actors as it is on regular viewers like me) and can be as confusing as the no-your-TiVo-didn't-screw-up finale to THE SOPRANOS (which I actually did enjoy). At least today, they seem to have revised their formula slightly. Before the opening theme, the scenes were: Lily/Dusty; Lucinda/Faith; Luke/Noah, which turned into Luke/Holden briefly; then back to Lily/Dusty, which briefly became Lily/Dusty/Lucinda; then
Brad/Katie/Jack; then Carly/Kit and back to Brad/Katie/Jack. People actually
got to finish their conversations and related storylines were lumped
together! I hate to be so conservative in my attitude toward soap innovations, but I'm already dealing with the jumpy camerawork and the jarring outdoor remotes — can they at least give me full scenes?
