I am hooked on DAYS OF OUR LIVES right now because of the Shawn/Belle/Philip storyline. DAYS is on at 2 o’clock here in New York, which is the same time as AS THE WORLD TURNS and ONE LIFE TO LIVE; I decide which soap to watch based on whether these three are featured. I've never been particularly interested in Belle or Shawn, especially post-recasts. Jay Kenneth Johnson's Philip has captured my attention. I like that he's grown up from cute rich boy to full-fledged Kiriakis scion, using his wealth and power to get what he wants. Yeah, he’s entirely too cocky, presumptuous and pushy, but it’s true to his character and bloodline. Could the child of scheming Kate and power-hungry Victor not carry around a sense of entitlement? This is something the show acknowledged last week when Philip essentially told Kate that he was inspired by her ruthless determination to drive a wedge between Sami and Lucas. DAYS has added at least one realistic challenge by having "Shelle" struggle with finances. (Okay, it doesn’t really make sense that Belle has no money since John would have certainly seen to it that his daughter and granddaughter were provided for, but I’ll just let it go.) Living in a drab room above a pub doesn’t exactly inspire sweeping romance. Now the show has to make sure that Shawn does more than just sulk about the competition because a real triangle has equilateral sides and right now, Shawn’s is coming up mighty short.
