GUIDING LIGHT's Josh being appointed to head up the Springfield church is nothing short of...miraculous! Without benefit of study at any seminary, Josh beat out a number of other candidates to replace Rev. Ruthledge. Like most soaps, GL has a tradition of characters who suddenly sprout new careers — remember how Dr. Mel forgot to mention she had a law degree (or was it the other way around?) — so it's not shocking that former "black sheep" playboy-turned-construction-CEO Josh can change careers once again. I suppose he could have done some kind of Internet study course (with just a few clicks in a search engine I located divinity programs that promised to legally ordain me before today's GL episode ended; others would take up to six months), but Springfield is presumably a mainstream Protestant town unlikely to cotton to some New Age-y outfit that smacked of cyber-religion. Since Josh clearly never went away to seminary, one could presume the other candidates were even more unsuitable. Perhaps the others declined to be interviewed in a restaurant instead of the church rectory. Or perhaps they were all the sort of "holier-than-thou" snobs looking to judge the congregation that Mr. Procter and the selection panel pooh-poohed. So Josh took the job, and without fussing over details like salary and work schedules. "It actually makes you believe there's a God!" he exulted. Or a head writer.
