From Mala Bhattacharjee
Ever notice that the minute somebody lands in the hospital on a soap is the minute everybody gets religion? Such was the case on GENERAL HOSPITAL today when, in the wake of Michael's shooting, Spinelli and Maxie ended up in the chapel. After Spinelli waxed on about energy and faith in a way that made him sound like a Cylon from BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, it was Teflon Don Sonny's turn to bend the Lord's (and Kate's) ear. I waited with bated breath for one of his patented promises to God (he makes them at least once every crisis), and I was completely unmoved by him unloading his burdens to Kate. I'm sorry: At some point on a show about mobsters (that just happens to be named after a hospital), you've got to quit feeling sorry for guys whose lifestyles put their children in danger. This is the same Sonny who has been shot repeatedly over the last decade. The same one whose first wife and child went kaboom. The same one who almost got Michael blown up by Sorel's birthday bomb. The same one who shot Carly in the head. The same Sonny from whom all three children were kidnapped. The same one who thought Michael was dead once already. Michael getting shot on Friday is not exactly surprising. It's the same old shtick. Trade Sorel and Faith and the Alcazars for the Zaccharas and you have the same horrific mob life that Sonny and Jason have been living for years. It never changes. Every time, Sonny and Jason make a promise to protect their loved ones better and faster, and every time, they fail.

You know who I actually feel sorry for? Carly, for believing Sonny and Jason are good fathers despite the laundry list of crazy stuff I rattled off above. It took this latest tragedy for her to blast Sonny for his irresponsibility, and it was far too long in coming. Maybe it's an aftereffect of his bullet 'o love? I also feel sorry for Jax, trapped on the tarmac in Houston (REALLY? What could that bad weather possibly be? Rain of toads?). He's proof that Carly is capable of choosing someone outside the mob life and he's been a wonderful stepfather. The poor guy has already lost three babies and GH had to trump up some silly excuse to keep him from his stepson's bedside? Come. On. Whoever gets on the horn to Heaven next should ask the Almighty to clear up the clouds in Texas so Jax can get home before the next speeding bullet.

Not one single ounce of sympathy do I feel for Carly. Not after all the times she told AJ that he had no right to see his own son because of the danger that he posed. Not after all the times that she defended Sonny and insisted that he and Jason would always keep the children safe, despite the repeated warnings that it wasn't possible. Not after all the times that she mocked, derided, and criticized Alexis for trying to protect Kristina, and all the times that she laughed off Alexis' concerns for the safety of her child. And my sympathy for what Alexis is feeling, and her fear for her children, is tempered by the fact that she refuses to do what should have been done months ago - putting Jerry Jacks behind the bars of a federal maximum security prison where he belongs, and making him pay for the crimes that he has committed. The one person who I'd like to hear say "I told you so" to them all is Mac, who lost his own beautiful daughter and has been speaking out against the insanity o
