One rarely sees those "Can you hear me now?" commercials during GUIDING LIGHT anymore, which is ironic because some of my fellow editors and I find ourselves asking that very question more and more. That's because the "new look" GL came with new sound — and a previously unheard-of problem: I can hardly hear the dialogue. I understand that sound recording is being done on location, and those conditions make it much harder to record the sounds you want (dialogue) without the contamination of sounds you don't want (say, traffic). But there is simply no excuse for broadcasting a show that cannot be understood. Dramatic scenes have been marred because rain splashing on umbrellas drowned out dialogue. What, exactly, was Josh saying to Crystal today while the camera lovingly focused on that apple pie? When GL combines its newfangled hand-held cameras and caffeine-jitters editing style with muddy sound, the result is frustrating. Several of today's scenes featuring my favorite couple, Lizzie and Bill, were ruined by bad sound and manic cross-cutting. News Editor Mala Bhattacharjee complained that the bad sound and video during the love scene literally made her nauseous. Don't get me wrong, I want to like the new GL, but I feel the same way as many viewers who write us, saying they love the soap and are giving it a chance, but the sound and picture quality make watching difficult. Don't tell me nothing can be done, GL, because I don't want to hear it!
