Marcy Rylan and Tom Pelphrey (Lizzie and Jonathan, GL)
— PGP

February 27, 2008

From Joe Diliberto
Today was Jonathan and Lizzie's wedding day on GUIDING LIGHT, so of course there was no chance of things going smoothly — especially with the bride's and groom's thoughts occupied everywhere but the chapel er...um, bar (Trust me, don't ask). To be fair, the nuptials were merely a prelude to Jonathan taking his whole family on the run. The scene in which Lizzie surreptitiously bequeathed Roxy to mother Beth was surprisingly emotional. Marcy Rylan's red-rimmed eyes and stuttering speech seemed so sincere that the whole thing was wrenching to watch — and I don't even like dogs. GL has been stingy with the emotional scenes lately, seemingly preferring to make viewers' jaws drop with plots that are shocking in a bad way (see: Harley stealing her niece's lover, and everything about Gus/Natalia), so if fans have to settle for "puppy love," we'll take it. But today also gave Tom Pelphrey another chance to shine as Jon struggled to lay his memories of dead Tammy to rest.He broke through the ice on the lake, but couldn't break down his own mental blocks. But I can't blame him. It is unfair to ask him to surrender a box of trinkets when Lizzie's purse doubtless holds family photos. And at least Jon is pining for a dead girl — Lizzie is mooning over the still-breathing Bill. For his part, Bill was looking to do some heavy breathing with the vapid Marlene — right in front of the conflicted Lizzie. The bimbo was not a good argument for Bill as Lizzie's alternative to someone willing to marry her. Why couldn't Bill be interested in somebody who's sexy and smart, y'know, like...Lizzie. Somebody easy on the eyes (like Lizzie), but with whom he could conduct an intelligent discussion (like Lizzie). In other words, somebody who would know the definition of vapid.
