Red-Hot Mama

— By Robert Schork

Soap Opera Weekly: How does being a mom in real life compare to playing one in Harmony?
Eva Tamargo Lemus: The problems are on opposite sides of the spectrum, because my kids are much older on the show. As a real-life mom, I deal with problems like: Do your homework. Take a bath. Other than that, the boundaries are the same, the discipline is the same. I'm a very strict mom! So I'm not unlike Pilar in that respect. Once I say no, I don't go back on my word. But I choose my fights wisely, as they say. And I watch a lot of Dr. Phil. That helps.

Weekly: If Dr. Phil came to Harmony and had a sit-down with Pilar and her three sons, what would his advice be?
Lemus: He'd tell her to get a life! Honestly, he'd probably say, "Woman, you need to get your own life and stop worrying about your children. They're grown!" Sometimes parents don't realize that children are an extension of you, but they aren't you. We tend to forget to let go and just let them be. I say that based on my own upbringing and the way my parents are with me; my children are too small yet. They're still very much under my wing, and everything I do and say is gold. I'm the fifth of seven children, but I'm an old woman, so to speak. Yet my father still thinks he can try to run my life. They're coming from a good place always, but parents tend to forget that their kids are individuals. You bring them into this world, but they're not really yours. God lends them to you, and He hopes that you do a great job and helps you along the way, but they ultimately belong to Him. That's a big lesson to learn as a parent.

Weekly: What's it like playing the mother of Passions' three biggest hunks?
Lemus: It's awesome! I was doing a signing at FanFest, and the fans would say, "Oh, you're too young to be a mom, but your sons are gorgeous!" And I'd go, "Of course they are — Look at me!" I always say that I can't wait until they cast Martin (their father), because he'd better be one good-looking guy! There's gotta be some good genes there.

Weekly: Which of your sons most embodies Martin?
Lemus: Luis, without a doubt. Antonio is too aloof. He's a little bit in denial about our situation, whereas Luis confronts it head-on and has that thirst to settle those demons. I don't think Antonio has it that passionately. And also his love for Sheridan. The way Luis loves Sheridan, that's the way I envision Martin loves Pilar.

Weekly: Who is the most thoughtful?
Lemus: Miguel. Because in all the scenes I've had with him, he's very compassionate, very understanding and very neutral in his support. If you think about the dynamics of a family, the youngest male will always be the one to side with the mom quicker. He hasn't had to bear as much yet.
