ONE LIFE TO LIVE Interviews

Handsome Dan Goes Behind The Cam

— By Lauren Flynn

After a recent stint on SUPERNATURAL, Dan Gauthier (ex-Kevin, ONE LIFE TO LIVE) is taking a little break from acting. Digest caught up with Gauthier when he was shooting OLTL's 10,000th episode and got the scoop on his latest project with Trevor St. John (Todd, OLTL).

"Trevor St. John and his cousin wrote a film, which they cut into a short — a 20-minute film," shares Gauthier. "We were going to shoot it this summer, but we’re waiting for this camera, called The RED, which comes out in January." RED ONE is a state-of-the-art 35-millimeter digital camcorder that is still being field-tested, according to Red.com. Once it becomes available, they plan to film the short in the first half of 2008, with Gauthier stepping behind the camera for the first time.

"Trevor's going to be in it and there may be three other cast members, not from [OLTL]," states the actor, who currently resides in L.A. with son Cole and wife Lisa. Gauthier says he'll draw on his experience from film sets rather than TV to direct. "[OLTL] is more like sitcom directing because there's four cameras, but just from being on film sets and stuff like that, you watch and learn over the years," he explains. "So I've learned from that and I've watched and observed movies, but I'm sure I'll make a ton of mistakes and hopefully get through it, and it'll look good."

The script was originally titled Be a Man, although that is subject to change, according to the actor. Once the short is finished, Gauthier hopes to explore several possibilities for getting it out there. "Well, shorts are hard," he admits. "We’ll probably have it online at some point when we're finished with it, but we're going to try to get into festivals and see what happens. Maybe we can get it on the front end of movies when they go to DVD."

Gauthier is not the only former OLTLer to go on to direct. Last year, he acted in James DePaiva’s (ex-Max, OLTL) film directing debut, Undone, which has yet to be released.
