Wicked Return: GL's David Andrew Macdonald Is Back

— By Danielle McClure

Dark Knight: A look at Edmund (Macdonald) in better days.

Edmund's highly anticipated return to Springfield is set for October 24, but what kind of trouble will the former dark prince stir up this time? Digest got the scoop from portrayer David Andrew Macdonald, who says he's thrilled to be back on daytime for the month-long cameo that's certain to rattle cages all over town.

The actor says transforming himself into Edmund again wasn't hard. "You do something for six-and-a-half years and you've really worked a lot of it out, so it becomes a bit of muscle memory," he notes. The feeling was mutual for GL's cast and crew, who welcomed Macdonald back with a flurry of hellos. "It's been a lot of fun," Macdonald grins. "I got there and the day had moved along really quickly, so they got to my [scenes] just before lunch and I'd spent so much of the morning saying hello to people and talking that, of course, I hadn't really gone back to look at my script [laughs]!"

Tainted Love: Will Beth (Beth Chamberlin) fall prey — again — to Edmund's (Macdonald) wily ways?
— LORENZO BEVILAQUA/PGP

Still, after working mostly in theater productions over the past few years, including a very successful run as Lord Ashbrook in Coram Boy on Broadway (it closed in May), it did take Macdonald a few minutes to adjust to his new audience. "There's a certain amount of awkwardness just in getting in front of the camera ...[with] camera guys, the boom operators and props and everything, it's sort of heavy back there!" he admits.

Viewers can certainly expect to see Edmund up to his old tricks — and even get a taste of what's been going on in San Cristobel. "[Edmund's] down there and he runs into some people because they need things that he can do for them," Macdonald previews. "But also there are some people who are there independently of that and, of course, he wreaks havoc on them as well."

Most of all, Macdonald is just excited to play up Edmund's wicked antics again. "He's an imp! He's a total imp! [laughs]! A lot of times, I think in television and film, too, the [bad] characters are kind of brooding and heavy. Edmund is more impish. He's just sort of, 'Oh, I'm going to put a match between your toes and run away and watch!' Or 'Oops! I'm going to put a little sour milk in the punch!' So that's a lot of fun. I get a kick out of it."
