It's All Relative
— By Dorothy Walsh
Soap Opera Digest: Did you know you were going to be in the same storyline when you first met?
Tom Pelphrey: Not really.
Stephanie Gatschet: I don't even know if they [the writers] knew it was going to go there.
Pelphrey: I had just started working and I found out I had to be making out with her in a week, so I was like, "Hi, Steph, my name's Tom, do you want to go have lunch and talk before we have to make out?"
Gatschet: Oh, yeah!
Pelphrey: I felt like she was totally weirded out. Like is that an appropriate thing to do?
Gatschet: That was such a good idea!
Digest: Did you click right away?
Pelphrey: It was a bit labored at first, as anything would be.
Gatschet: Shut up! It was a good idea and I probably wouldn't have thought of it. But then I don't really remember a time since then that we weren't friends.
Digest: What kind of things do you have in common?
Pelphrey: We have a very similar sense of
humor.
Gatschet: I was going to say the same thing!
Digest: What do you find funny?
Pelphrey and Gatschet: FAMILY GUY.
Pelphrey: Also, I love playing cards with her 'cause I always win.
Gatschet (sighs): It's true.
Digest: When did you first learn that you were going to be paired together romantically?
Gatschet: Ellen [Wheeler, executive producer] pulled us into her office separately to tell us. She wanted to let us know the plan because it was controversial.
Pelphrey: There were scenes for a while where it seemed like [the writers] wanted sexual tension. I was like, "What do they want?" I said, "Let's play this like sexual tension, see if they yell at us." So we did this one scene really sexually and they were like, "More!"
Gatschet: Ellen told us that they had a lot of resistance to the storyline, but she and [Head Writer] David Kreizman wanted to go there, so they decided to throw it in subtly until people actually wanted it, and that's exactly what happened.
Digest: When did you realize the couple had so many fans?
Gatschet: When we discovered that there were Web sites.
Pelphrey: At a fan club event, somebody brought me a printout of everything from [one of them].
Digest: What do you think of the nickname "Jammy"?
Gatschet: They do that to every soap couple, it's so funny. Ours just happens to work out kinda cute.
Pelphrey: You're the whole thing; all I get is a letter.
