Catching Up With ... Ignacio Serricchio

— By Tom Stacy

Soap Opera Digest: How are you, Ignacio?
Ignacio Serricchio: I'm doing well. I'm trying to stay happy.

Digest: Tell us what you're doing on GHOST WHISPERER.
Serricchio: I'm playing the role of Gabriel. He's another ghost whisperer who comes into Grandview. He stirs things up. He makes Melinda, Jennifer Love Hewitt's character, a little suspicious because it's a weird coincidence that there are two people with the same powers in the same town at the same time while there have been problems with some spirits staying earthbound.

Digest: Have you been watching your performances?
Serricchio: I have and I was very pleased. I usually talk to my mother when I'm in need of criticism. She's the one who's always honest with me and she was very happy. She said that the more I do, the better I get, so that was nice to hear.

Digest: How was working with Jennifer Love Hewitt?
Serricchio: She's amazing. Her work ethic is admirable. After long hours and really emotional scenes, she still has the energy to crack jokes and be attentive. She's phenomenal. She made it very easy for me. The first scene we did, she asked me for my birthday and I told her that was weird that she asked me because I usually ask people their birthdays, too. Weird, huh?

Digest: Very GHOST WHISPERish. You've also appeared on the ABC Family series WILDFIRE since leaving GH. Any chance of reprising that role?
Serricchio: I don't know. I'm not sure. It was great. It was a tight crew and I liked the storyline of the half brother coming back and trying to reconnect the family. I always seem to play these troubled guys [laughs]. My mother says, "Hey, all the stuff you did as a kid and got in trouble for, now you can get paid for it!"

Digest: Are you still recognized by GH fans? Do they still call you by your nickname, Nacho?
Serricchio: Yeah. I just went to Vegas for my birthday [in April] and I was getting a drink and this woman said, "What happened? You died." I'm like, "No, I'm here." At first, I didn't know what she was talking about.

Padre Knows Best: Serricchio is looking forward to working with his former GH pop Ted King (soon-to-be ex-Alcazar) again soon.
— Adam Larkey/ABC

Digest: Are you still in touch with any former castmates?
Serricchio: I'm always in touch with Greg Vaughan [Lucky] and Ted King [soon-to-be ex-Alcazar], especially if the Yankees lose. I always make sure I call Ted. But yeah, I still talk to Rick Hearst [Ric] and Bradford [Anderson, Spinelli].

Digest: What do you think about Ted leaving the show?
Serricchio: I'm thrilled for him. We were always trying to fight for more of the whole father-and-son storyline. That was a connection we didn't really get to explore, and it's very topical in today's society. But I think it's great for him. He's capable of so much more.

Digest: Maybe you two could work on another project together?
Serricchio: I would love that. I'm working on some comedy and I'd love to put him in that. You may not know it, but he can be funny. We always have such a great time at the the fan events together.

Digest: Speaking of which, will you be popping in during GH's annual Fan Club Weekend this summer?
Serricchio: Absolutely. My band and I are doing a fund-raiser the day after. It's a fund-raiser for Children's Hospital, both on Emmy weekend and Fan Club weekend. Just because I went to prime-time doesn't mean I can't see the [GH] fans. These are the people I started working for — and they're the reason I'm still working.
