Rachel Melvin - The Next Martha Stewart

— By Janet Di Lauro

At the ripe old age of 20, DAYS OF OUR LIVES' Rachel Melvin (Chelsea) is already a Martha Stewart in training. "I LOVE her. Seriously, I used to try to stay home from school, so I could watch her show," says Melvin, referring to MARTHA STEWART LIVING. "I watched it religiously for a while. I was like, I've got to learn how to do that."

Melvin is all about "all the 'artsy fartsy' stuff that you could possibly do. I love scrapbooking. I love decorating. I love art," rattles off the actress. "I'm a very crafty person."

Among the project she's tackled of late, Melvin cites scrapbooking. "My mom put two tubs of pictures together for me and my sister, pictures of us," explains Melvin. "I decided to scrapbook, and it's become an addiction. It's a really fun way to display your pictures and your memories. Now, I do it as often as I can."

Melvin has a passion for pottery, too. "I used to work in a ceramic pottery painting place in Phoenix," she recounts. "It was the best job I ever had other than acting. I made a lot of things while I was there. I made a Cookie Monster plate, because I love cookies. That turned out really cute. But my favorite thing that I did there was a mug with my name on it. I made each letter out of a different thing. I made the R out of two drama masks. I made the A out of shells. I don't how I did it, but I'm proud of how it turned out."

Melvin is currently embracing the Picasso within her. "I'm learning how to paint with oils on canvas," she notes. "I draw a little bit, but I've never had an art lesson before. It's just been something that I do. My mom draws very well. I think I got that gene from her."

As to what she got from her daily doses of Martha Stewart's show, Melvin cites learning how to cook. "But only desserts," says Melvin, "because I love desserts. A while ago, she made this cool thing called a watermelon bomb. It's a giant cake made out of cake and sorbet. A summer treat. You cut it open and it looks like a watermelon, but it's cake and ice cream. I haven't tried it, yet, but I want to. So that's on my to-do list."

And the list entries don't end there. Melvin, who still lives with her parents, looks forward to the day when she has her own place. "I can't wait until I'm living on my own, so I can do my own thing to my house — re-upholster furniture, paint the walls...I'm ready to tackle all of it.”
