DAYS OF OUR LIVES Interviews

Talking With DAYS's Darin Brooks

— By Janet Di Lauro

Since Darin Brooks joined DAYS OF OUR LIVES in 2005, Max Brady has had his share of love interests: Chelsea, Abby, Mimi and new love Stephanie. Yet he's never had a truly meaty storyline to sink his teeth into, until now: the return of the abusive father who gave Max away as a child. So far, it's been everything Brooks had hoped for, and then some.

Soap Opera Weekly: Was this a storyline you were anxious to explore?
Darin Brooks: Totally! For the past three years I've been waiting for it.

Weekly: What are you most excited about?
Brooks: It's a very emotional and meaty story. [The writers] can go into a lot of depth, because there is not a lot that's been [revealed] about Max and his past. Why is he the way he is today? Why was he mute as a kid, and all that stuff. We can delve into all those topics.

Weekly: What was your reaction when you learned veteran daytime star Roscoe Born (Trent) had been cast as your dad?
Brooks: I actually didn't know until a couple of days before he started. The producers were kind of keeping it under wraps. Ed Scott (co-executive producer), Noel Maxam (supervising producer) and Kathy Foster (director) kept coming up to me, going, "So, are you excited? You know who your father is going to be, right?" I'd say, "No, nobody told me yet." They'd say, "Oh, okay. Never mind. Just know that we're excited, and it will be good. He's a really good actor."

Weekly: What was your initial meeting with Roscoe like?
Brooks: (Laughs) Well, it was very brief. I didn't know if he was going to be a method actor who would snub me off in the halls, or if he was going to be a normal, really nice guy. The fact is, he's a normal, really nice guy. I was having a conversation with somebody in the hallway, when Roscoe walked up to me and said, "You're Darin, right? You play Max." I told him, "Yeah." He said, "Well, I'll be playing your abusive father, and we'll have some fun with it." He was really cool. A very nice guy. I couldn't ask for more.

Weekly: How would you describe Max's feelings toward Trent?
Brooks: Max's father makes him angry. He sees red whenever he's around him. Right now, I would say having Max alone with Trent in the same room could be a scary thing. Max can take care of himself now, both physically and verbally. His father doesn't intimidate him anymore.

Weekly: Have you learned anything from working with Roscoe?
Brooks: He's a man of surprises. He likes to do things to surprise you, catch you off guard, and maybe get you into a special moment or place during a scene. One thing I've learned now is to surprise him back. I throw it back at him sometimes and see what we can do. So far, it's been great.

Maybe i'm not up to par but how come we are only concentrating on Max? What about Frankie? Aren't they supposed to be brothers that the Brady's adopted or were Max and Frankie adopted separately and have no blood relation? Can somebody clarify? Thanks,

When Max and Frankie were introduced in 1986, it was assumed that they were brothers because they were both street kids. Then in 1988, Frankie told Jennifer and the Bradys that they weren't related and that Frankie had simply found Max while they were both living on the streets. THEN, in 1990 when Frankie came back, it was revealed that Frankie was a European aristocrat named Francois von Leuschner who was Carly Manning's brother, and they were both on the run from Lawrence Alamain. That's why Frankie posed as a street kid in 1986. Um yeah, DAYS likes to rewrite its history...a lot!

I love this story line! It's nice to see a wide range of emotion coming from an actor who's been sorta under wraps for a while. Keep up the good work!

I love the Max/Trent story. It is about time we find out more about Max and watch him really shine. He is a great actor and deserves to have a story of his own. I am also enjoying Stephanie as she fights for her man, to prove she will stand by him no matter what. Thank you Days, for finally giving the fans a fantastic Max story.

Darin Brooks is such a talented actor and the character of Max Brady just seems like it was made for him. I am enjoying this storyline for Max. It gives us (the viewers) the chance to enjoy how multi-talented Darin is in portraying his character. From sweet, sexy, loving, playful and funny to emotional, anger filled, and ready to fight. It has been completely captivating and heart wrenching, leaving us (the viewers) wanting more and more. Darin's chemistry with Shelley Hennig (Stephanie)is truely phenominal and radiates on screen. You can definelty see them as a "SUPER COUPLE" in the making!!! So thank you Days for the great storyline with Roscoe, and for the romance of Stephanie and Max. Also thanks to Darin for being such an amazing actor and for letting us enjoy your ability along with you. Cannot wait for "DAYS" to come especially involving "STAX".

Days has been the LEAD SHOW on NBC for so many years that all would be lost on Daytime TV if it were canceled. The whole ratings of the network would go down, down.... d o w n!

I have watched Days for such a long time and it would be a shame to see it cancelled now when it is finally exciting some story lines to it. DO NOT CANCEL!!!

I, too, like the Max/Trent story; however, I HATE the Trent/Nicole story, and don't really care WHAT he has on her. Nicole is much too strong a character to be being told who and who not to see by Trent.

I love this show and it's the only soap i've ever watched. My only complaint is that they spend too long on a storyline. Can't you move along a little faster and resolve some of the storylines quicker. They seem to drag on and on. I'd also like to see the old John back soon and some good old fashioned John and Marlena love stories.

I can't believe how Max (Darin) and his bio father Trent (Roscoe) look alike. I thought they might really be father and son in real life. The writing has been much better after the writers strike. I will be crushed if Days is cancelled. Been watching since 1989.
