AS THE WORLD TURNS Interview

Michael Park (Jack, ATWT)
— Bleacher & Everard

Watching The Contestants

— By Jennifer Lenhart

Soap Opera Digest: What do you think of the talent in the competition so far?
Michael Park: We have at least three people who could be deserving of a 13-week contract.

Digest: Have you had to judge anyone? And if so, were you a Paula, Randy or Simon?
Park: I was a judge for the romantic scenes segment. I was working with Terri [Colombino, Katie] and [Vice President, CBS Daytime, East Coast] Richard Mensing and I think I went a little Simon on someone. Actually, I was the voice of reason, so I went a little Randy. I let [the contestant] know what was up as far as the humanitarian side of what we do, and how you should treat people like you probably would like to be treated in return.

Digest: You first met the contestants on the studio tour. What do you think of them?
Park: [One contestant] needs to be quiet and not talk so ill of everybody else in the house. I don't know if [he or she] wants to come off playing a character for strategy's sake. But I think the kids are missing the boat by not forming alliances and maybe sabotaging someone else's audition in order to further themselves.

Digest: That's mean!
Park: That's SURVIVOR, baby. That's what we do! This is a game!

Digest: Have you ever sabotaged an audition?
Park: No, I have never sabotaged an audition, but what I'm saying is that it might be interesting to see someone try. Someone as crafty as — well, Alex is too nice, so he would never do that — but someone as crafty as Justin thinks he is could possibly do that. Someone like Marjorie could definitely sabotage somebody. And anybody who can pull off any kind of scene whatsoever can figure out how to sabotage someone else's audition. I would never think of sabotaging someone on the set — that's not my m.o. — but as far as playing the game goes, it's good on SURVIVOR and BIG BROTHER. Or if there was a mole involved trying to sabotage people, knowing that they're safe. Figure out who the mole is and you get an automatic exemption. It would have to be someone really crafty.
