Drown And Out

— By Mara Levinsky

Greenlee is just the latest Pine Valley-ite to meet their maker in a watery fashion. In honor of her recent demise, we take a look back at 12 other AMC citizens who've drowned or almost drowned.

Josh Duhamel
Leo (Josh Duhamel) found the diamonds, lost his life.
— ABC

Leo du Pres: In an effort to save his wife, Greenlee, from his murderous mother, Vanessa, in 2002, Leo ended up plunging over the cliff at Miller's Falls and is presumed to have died in the violent waters below.

Cameron Mathison Vincent Irizarry Laura Allen
Ryan (Cameron Mathison, l.) and David (Vincent Irizarry) helped to resuscitate Laura (Laura Allen).
— ABC

Laura English: Greenlee pushed Laura, her rival for Leo's affections, over the side of The Fidelity in 2000. Though Laura was saved from the near-drowning, Greens ended up in handcuffs for Laura's attempted murder (the charges were later dropped).

Paulina Gerzon Aiden Turner Eva La Rue
Here's Maddie (Paulina Gerzon) with Aidan (Aiden Turner) and Maria (Eva La Rue), prior to going overboard.
— ABC

Maddie Grey: This little moppet had two close calls with water. When she was born in 1997, Erica was transporting Maddie in a car during a storm; the vehicle slid into a river and Maddie was, for a time, presumed drowned (in actuality, she'd been rescued by Esther). Then, in 2003, she witnessed Chris Stamp's murder by the evil Flanders. To dispose of the eyewitness, Flanders tossed Maddie off a yacht, but Maria jumped in and saved her daughter's life (and shed her nasty case of amnesia in the process).

Robin Mattson Sean Marquette
Janet (Robin Mattson) did a good deed for Jamie (Sean Marquette).
— ABC

Jamie Martin: On a 1995 camping trip with his dad, Tad, and JR at Willow Lake, Jamie went swimming sans parental supervision and nearly drowned. He was rescued by Janet Green.

Cady McClain Michael E. Knight
Dixie (Cady McClain) was Tad's (Michael E. Knight) saving grace.
— ABC

Phil Brent: In 1978, Phil and Tara were frequently at odds over their rebellious son, Phil, Jr. (who was actually Chuck's son, but that's another story). Tara took her boy up to a cabin, where he nearly drowned in a lake. He was saved by Chuck, and Tara displayed her gratitude by taking him to bed.

Tad Martin: In 1990, Billy Clyde Tuggle lured Tad to a bridge, which he had rigged with explosives. When the bomb went off, both men plunged into the icy water below. Tad's body was never recovered ... and with good reason, as he made it to shore. But since the near-drowning had left him amnesiac, he wandered not to Pine Valley but to California. He wasn't reunited with his loved ones until 1992. In 1993, an attempt on Tad's life was made by his evil double, Ted Orsini. Dixie had to pull off a daring water rescue in the Canadian wilderness to save his life — which she did, thank you very much.

Rebecca Budig
At least Greenlee's (Rebecca Budig) clothes weren't dragging her down on this near-drowning venture.
— ABC

Billy Clyde Tuggle: Billy Clyde's body washed up on shore in 1990 after the bridge he had rigged to explode did precisely that and Billy Clyde, sending him to a watery grave.

Little Adam Chandler: In 2005, the infant toddled out of the Chandler manse and fell into the pool, nearly drowning. Thankfully, quick thinking by Babe — and her knowledge of infant CPR — saved her son's life.

Greenlee Smythe: In 2001, Greenlee attempted to fake a near-drowning to get estranged love Leo to come to her rescue. Alas, after she jumped off The Fidelity, it was Ryan who got her safely back on-board.... In 2003, reeling from the discovery that her biological father was Jackson Montgomery and not the late Roger Smythe, Greens absconded to the shore and when her recklessness nearly caused her to drown, it was Jack who played savior.... In 2008, she came close to drowning again, when she hit her head in a boating accident. But talk about a win/win — not only did she survive, but the shock of seeing her knocked unconscious restored amnesiac Ryan's memory.

Kelly Ripa Olivia Birkelund
Hayley (Kelly Ripa, l.) and Arlene (Olivia Birkelund) didn't quite have a luxurious time on the yacht.
— ABC

Arlene Vaughan: In 2000, when David's quest to win Dixie away from Tad led to everyone aboard The Fidelity yacht consuming large doses of Hayward's illegal inhibition-reducing drug, Libidizone, Arlene made a play for her son-in-law, Mateo. When Hayley caught her mom and her hubby in a seemingly compromising position, she flipped, and in the ensuing confrontation between Hayley and Arlene, it looked like Arlene had died. To protect his daughter, Adam threw Arlene's body overboard. Somehow, she survived, and hung out in the Caribbean until she came back to town in 2001.

JR Chandler: While on a drunken bender in 2009, JR fell off the docks and had to be rescued by Amanda.
