There was plenty of time to write a fantastic exit that didn't kill Rick off, but it's more like TPTB didn't know what to do with him so they just shelved him for the time being. Not sure why he would tell wack job Claudia that he was going to LA, unless it isn't true. She's probably got one or two hits left to use up on her "Mob Hits r Us" frequent hit card and Rick would be a prime candidate.
Well, the good news there is she's incompetant so unless he's traveling on a fault line when an earthquake happens, the character will live on. The only good thing about this ending for him is that it leaves the door open for his return. But, the idea of him leaving his daughter just doesn't resonate with me. And, leaving Claudia alone with a naively trusting Sonny & that amnio, is just not something he would do. He wouldn't trust that she wouldn't rig it. As a matter of fact, he'd probably stand guard outside the lab to ensure she didn't mess with it.
Good one! Thanks for the good laugh, I needed that.

Back to Ric's exit. The way it's being written is a good news/bad news situation. The good news is they aren't killing him off only to make him return in perfect health, without a scratch or bring him back as an evil twin. He can come back at any time for any reason. The bad news is his suddenly leaving town at THIS point in his storyline is unrealistic & totally out of character. Unless one or both of the Alcazar brothers is alive & using something to manipulate him, I don't see what would be so pressing that he'd leave the daughter he adores. Another reason I don't see him leaving at this time is the amnio. I can't see him leaving town, trusting her not to rig the paternity test. That's just not how Ric's mind works. The writers should have considered how the character would behave before they decided to write him out. This just isn't something Ric would do at this time.
