After what seemed at times to be much confusion, on December 18th, Erica calls Zach to tell him Myrtle has died. The actress, Eileen H, died in late October, but even as spunky as she was at age 90, she was recurring at best.

Meanwhile, TPTB claim Myrtle's part will be recast and the boardinghouse will live on. Even Leigh Taylor-Young has auditioned.

Riddle me tis If AMC has a tribute at the rebuilt casino, complete with the Fargate Carnival Room, wouldn't be a tremendous stretch to recast the part? I mean, Myrtle's cousin/sister whatever, could come run the boarding house.

NOBODY can walk in and generate the special bond she had with Erica, Zach, and Ryan..

Just my two cents.

Are you kidding me, they are going to recast, what a mistake. That is like trying to recast Erica, you just don't do it. I am appalled. Why not like you said make it her sister or cousin. This is unacceptable. I am sure the actors who work there will say something about it all.

They are not going to recast Myrtle. I don't know what rumors have been posted but there is no way that there will be a recast. I was just at an event with some AMC actors this past weekend and they were saying what a loss Myrtle will be to the characters on the show, as well as Eileen being a loss as an actress. There has never been a recast planned.

Recast Myrtle?!? Not a chance. Thorston would be the first to oppose the idea. He wouldn't stand for it and neither would the fans. Eileen was a wonderful person and her character was someone everyone wanted to know and love. No actress could ever take her place. Let Zach put the memorial in the casino and if Fargate's is rebuilt it will have to be run by a long lost relative.

BTW, Friday is supposed to be a real tear jerker.

>>We, along with millions of others, were saddened to hear about the passing of Eileen Herlie, who played Myrtle Fargate on "All My Children" since 1976. But we knew the show would address her passing in a fitting way. Well, it's fitting alright. This Friday, the entire episode is devoted to Myrtle (who, we learn on Thursday, has passed away in her sleep) and the impact she had on Pine Valley. We've seen it, cried (a lot) and loved it. There are flashbacks galore. If you loved the character of Myrtle, you've got to see it.

Here's a sneak peek at what you can expect:

<<<

This was from this week's Soapdishers published on Monday

>>>>All My Children producers were left scrambling after Leigh Taylor-Young pulled out of negotiations to play Myrtle Fargate. Ms Taylor-Young was quoted as saying "I was very excited to be moving to New York, especially during the holidays, and working on All My Children, an institution on daytime TV. I was also looking forward to taking the role of Myrtle Fargate and adding new dimensions to the character. But the amount of mail and e-mails I have received has made me realize that Myrtle Fargate is more than just a character, she's an iconic figure, and there is no way i could replace an actress who is held in such high regard and has so defined who Myrtle was that no other actress could play that role. However, I am open to the priviledge of playing another character on All My Children at another time." The producers have since decided not to recast Myrtle and have changed the script to have Erica calling Zach to inform him of Myrtle's passing. They do plan however to bring in a previously unknown relative of Myrtle's, Lisa Fargate, who inherits the boutique and boarding house. (In this soap economy, recycling standing sets instead of building new ones is in vogue. BonJour Cafe, on OLTL for example.) In an attempt to inject more comedy into the show, Lisa will be young and extremely eccentric, and will make Opal Cortland seem like a church mouse in comparison. Casting information was not available when we went to press.

Here's a great gallery

I am looking forward to Zach's performance Friday. From what I have heard from advertisers, TK and EH had both an on and off screen chemistry.

That was a lovely episode. The whole thing broke my heart. The actors all seemed truly heartbroken. I only wish Michael Knight had been there. But it was nice to see all the flashbacks and the poem at the end was just beautiful. AMC did a great job.

It was a beautiful episode from start to finish. I'd like to think that TK wrote that last poem because if I hadn't been crying before, I was when I heard his voice over. It was perfection.

Highland SongBy Thorsten Kaye (Zack Slater)Now who will lead our CarnivalAnd who will make us strongerWho will mend our broken sleepWhen she is here no longerFor whose part do we stand and bowWhat stories do we tellAnd will we memorize the dayWhen great and greatness fellSay will this valley overcomeAnd will these shadows fadeAnd will we lift our eyes to seeThe beauty that she madeThe disappearing last of herThat leads to worlds unknownHas left a path to softly treadWhen sadness wanders homeI

When Zach was in the elevator I just lost it. I started crying even more... That was a great episode. Does anyone know the name of the song that Bianca sang?

APPARENTLY, EILEEN HAD SUNG THIS SONG ON BROADWAY

ONCE UPON A TIME

Once upon a time a girl with moonlight in her eyes
Put her hand in mine and said she loved me so
But that was once upon a time, very long ago
Once upon a time we sat beneath a willow tree
Counting all the stars and waiting for the dawn
But that was once upon a time, now the tree is gone
How the breeze ruffled up her hair
How we always laughed as though tomorrow wasn't there
We were young and didn't have a care
Where did it go?
Once upon a time the world was sweeter than we knew
Everything was ours, how happy we were then
But somehow once upon a time never comes again

It was a very nice episode but was disappointed that there were people missing and that some people need not be there. Where were some of the old faces. Myrtle touched so many lives. Why not have Linc there? I did like that Jessie was there but no Tad? Weird. To have Amanda there and not others. But all in all a great tribute. Hard to watch because you knew how close some where. I cried my eyes out. Saw a picture of her in people magazine with the actors who passed this year, so very nice.

I agree with mkv. The episode was nice, but I think it could have been so much better!! I know Tad was off looking for Jamie & Jeff, but I think the writers could have waited until that storyline was finished, so at least Tad could be at the memorial. Also, what about Joe, Ruth, Adam, Stuart and Mariam? Did anybody try to get in touch with some of the actors/actresses who use to be on the show to see if they would participate? I think to have only a handfull of people there did not do justice to the memory of Myrtle or Eileen Herlie!

The episode as I said was well written but seemed as though they could have had so many other people there than the ones that were there. Myrtle touched so many lives and so many different people lived in that boarding house. It was kind of insulting. I did love the poem Zach wrote so moving and more so since they loved one another. Maybe more flash backs with the people who weren't there would have been appropriate.

Take into account the fact that budgets have been slashed, plus the bad blood between ABC and Linda Dano, and that gives you a glimpse into the "why's" for her daughter, but not for everyone else.Palmer must be in bad shape and Tad couldn't wait a few days before leaving for Africa?I'm just on a rant...
