As the van holding Marty and Cole rolled down a rocky hill, Ramsey shot out the tire, sending the van careening off the cliff into the quarry below. Meanwhile, Starr brought fliers with photos of Marty and Cole to Rodi's, and ran into Michael drinking at the bar. David paid Marcie a visit and informed her that he knows who she is and wants his $1 million. Dorian was about to make a phone call (presumably to Clint) but thought against it — just as Charlie was about to blow Jared's spot at the Buchanan mansion.
Marcie tried to appeal to David's human side by relaying what she'd been through to keep Tommy safe. "I'm sure you'll get another book out of it," he cracked. David didn't feel that he owed Marcie or the McBains anything and just wanted to live in paradise with a whole lotta cash. "Guilt doesn't work on me," he told her. Marcie started to lose her cool as David dialed the phone and she tore it away from him. She grabbed at him and begged him to let her keep Tommy, who began to cry because of his mom's incessant screaming. David experienced a sudden change of heart and announced that he wouldn't try to separate Marcie from Tommy, then he explained that she could just find another way to get him the $1 million. Threatening to call Todd, he made her leave Tommy with him while she went off to find the money. "Is there a mini bar in here?" he asked the wide-eyed toddler when she was gone.
Starr asked Michael if he felt bad about letting Starr baby-sit for Tommy knowing that he was her brother. He said if he could go back and change things, he would, except for the fact that he grew to love Tommy very much. Michael admitted to Starr that Marcie had called and even though he begged her to come home, she told him to forget her. He looked at Cole's picture on the flier as he lamented, "You just never know what life's going to throw at you." Michael told Starr that Marcie always had nice things to say about Starr and was worried about how the trial would affect her. Starr shared that Marcie was always her favorite teacher. Michael worried that Marcie had left everything behind for a child who isn't even hers.
Nigel brought Charlie into the living room, but Jared quickly ushered him out and asked what he was doing there. "I'm your father," Charlie said. "Do I need a reason?" Bo and Clint wondered if the visitor knew something about Jared that would support their theory that he's scamming them. Natalie was quick to jump to Jared's defense even though she'd just learned that he's her uncle. Clint looked at his ringing phone, which blinked "Dorian calling," and said it was no one. Bo told Nigel that he planned to bring Asa's letter to the lab and would insist on a DNA test. Dorian called again and was sour that Clint refused to answer. Meanwhile, Charlie acknowledged that he was a lousy father but Jared wasn't interested in his attempt to make amends. Jared couldn't look his father in the eye as Charlie begged for another chance. Charlie wondered what Jared's connection to the Buchanans is, prompting Jared to talk about how he'd wished for a different father when Charlie was drinking. Now, he was making that fantasy a reality, and cryptically told Charlie that the only father he needs is dead. "I'll do anything just to be your dad again," Charlie pleaded — just as Dorian was listening from the bushes. Before heading off, Charlie said he hopes whatever Jared's doing with the Buchanans is for the right reason. Having gone unseen, Dorian hobbled around the corner.
A newly shorn Matthew came downstairs looking for Jared and asked why everyone looks so serious. Bo sat his son down and explained that Nigel read a letter stating that Asa's other son is Jared. "Maybe it's Jared," Natalie clarified, adding that Asa could have made a mistake. Jared returned and Natalie asked who that man was. Back at her home, Dorian jotted something down on a piece of paper. Charlie entered Rodi's and tentatively approached the bar, the day's events too much for him to take. Starr came back to Michael's seat after posting fliers; they agreed they weren't enemies but would keep that a secret. Michael asked Starr to remember how much she cares for Marcie, then was shocked to receive a call from his wife. Meanwhile, David told Tommy that everlasting happiness comes from money.
John, followed by Ramsey, ran down the hill to the white van laying on its side. Action Johnny Mac kicked in a glass window and ripped the door off the van, while trigger-happy Ramsey skipped away in pursuit of Simon. John successfully gained entry into the van, and found a wounded but lucid Marty pinned inside.
John tried to push a heavy box off of her but she started to scream. Marty called out for Cole and was alarmed to find the he wasn't in the van. John assured Marty that they would find Cole.
Tuesday
John was unable to remove a crate that was crushing Marty's legs, and Marty
hysterically begged for John to find Cole. John searched around with a
flashlight and spotted Cole lying on some rocks about 100 feet away. He told
Marty what he saw and she begged him to go to Cole. "You've been good luck
for the two of us," she said. "When I first met you I said, 'You know,
there's a man that I can trust.' So I need you to go out there and find my
kid. Can you do that for me?" He reluctantly agreed and ran to Cole, whose
head had been badly injured in the fall. John said he'd be back for him in a
minute and that Cole was the most important thing in Marty's life, just as
the van with Marty inside exploded.
David ate Tommy's baby food and told the tot to stop staring, noting "It's
rude." A knock at the door interrupted David's conversation with Tommy, and
thinking it was Marcie, he answered to find Viki, who was as startled as him. Viki
asked David what he was doing there, and he tried to duck the question by
implying that he was having a little fling with the yet-unidentified friend
of Gigi. Viki didn't understand why someone who never leaves her room would
befriend someone like David and leave him alone with her child. David told
her not to worry because he was being paid well for his services —
babysitting services, that is. Viki said if he needs money, he can just work
at the Bonjour Café, which she had found "unbelievably rewarding." Viki went
over to look at the baby in the crib, who David cracked was "worth his
weight in gold." Viki couldn't help but think of Todd and his search for his
son.
Jared returned to the living room and told everyone that Charlie was just an
ex-con who wanted money. Jared tried to explain that he was four days away
from taking a major business school exam when he was set up by a girl, whose
name he didn't disclose. Clint asked Nigel why he thought today was the
right time to read Asa's letter. Nigel explained that he didn't even know
that Jared was the Buchanan son before he read the letter, but Bo just
couldn't believe the coincidence and accused Jared of knowing what was in
the letter when he befriended Renee and Natalie. Jared continued to play
innocent, and Natalie suggested they just do a DNA test. Jared complied and
pulled out a piece of his hair, showing everyone in the room, then quickly
swapped it with David's hair as he put the sample in an envelope for Nigel.
Once alone with Jared, Natalie thanked him for not ratting out Tess, then
headed out to be alone for a while. Jared ran out after her, but she was
At Rodi's, the bartender asked Charlie what he'd like to drink, and Charlie
finally answered, "Vodka ... rocks." Charlie thought back to Viki
encouraging him and began to walk away from the bar, but recalling Jared's
rejection, he sat back down to his vodka. Meanwhile, Michael was elated to
receive a call from Marcie, who asked for his help in getting the $1 million
to give David. Michael asked what he needed it for and she explained that
someone recognized her and was going to turn her in. Marcie wouldn't tell
him who it was that had seen her. Michael was nervous about sending the
money and admitted that Todd had come at him with a knife. "Let me bring you
and Tommy home," he begged, but she insisted that she needed the money. He
explained that he'd been suspended from the hospital and couldn't get the
money. "If you ever loved me," she started to threaten, but he didn't want
to hear it. It pained him to do so, but he refused to help her stay on the
run with Tommy, reminding her the child isn't hers. Marcie couldn't scrape
together the $2 in time to stay on the call and slumped down against the
wall in tears.
Viki explained to David that she was worried about Todd, but she was also
concerned for Marcie, who was on the run with a child she had grown to love
as her own. "But Todd's your brother," David argued. Viki said she just
didn't want to see Marcie hurt and could understand how Marcie believes she
is doing the right thing. Viki went back to work, leaving David alone with
the child — and his conscience. Marcie returned shortly after and explained
that she couldn't get the money and handed over her engagement ring. David
surprised her by returning the ring and saying he wouldn't turn her in.
David advised her to be careful and take care of the kid. Across the hall,
Viki left her room and dialed Charlie on her cell phone.
Charlie asked Michael if he was okay. Michael told the stranger to imagine
what it's like to have your child taken away from you. Charlie pondered
that, and the bartender advised Michael to take it slow on the liquor.
Drinking isn't going to solve anything, Charlie advised Mike. Michael
slurred his words as he explained to Charlie that everything in his life had
turned to crap. Charlie said he knew what Michael was going through, then
looked down at his ringing phone and decided not to answer. "Here's to
fathers and sons," Charlie toasted Michael.
John and Cole ran down to the flaming van, and John held Cole back as he
screamed out for his mother.
Wednesday
A towel-clad David teased Viki about her relationship with Charlie, who
happened to be face-down on Michael's sofa. A nearly empty bottle of vodka
sat on the coffee table, so Charlie roused himself and reached for a little
hair of the dog. Cole thought back to the horrifying scene of his mother's
death as he was seated on a plane next to John.
Antonio ran into Talia at Rodi's and asked if he could buy her a beer in
honor of some stellar police work she'd done. She didn't seem too interested
in hanging out. Antonio worried that their kiss was going to make it hard
for them to work together. Talia told him not to give it another thought and
headed out under the guise of having some paperwork waiting at the station.
Meanwhile, Rex sidled up to Adriana's table, where she was writing out her
Christmas list, and made some cutesy comment about how he has everything he
wants. Later, Rex admitted that he got a glimpse of the list and didn't see
his name on there. She explained that she wanted to get him something
meaningful and just hadn't decided yet. Adriana reminded Rex that Michael
has his court date today and wondered if he'd beat the perjury charge.
Adriana noticed that Rex's watch had stopped and secretly jotted down "Rex -
watch" in her notebook.
Michael advised Charlie that coffee might be a better remedy than vodka for
a hangover. Charlie admitted that he was a recovering alcoholic as he
glanced at the missed call from Viki on his phone again. Charlie lamented
that perhaps his son was right: "Once a drunk, always a drunk." Michael went
to get ready for court, telling Charlie it was a long story. Charlie was
about to leave when he saw a photo of Marcie on the shelf and remarked that
he'd seen that woman in Texas. Michael made the snap decision to ditch his
court date and go after Marcie.
David jokingly suggested a little role-playing game with Viki, but she
wanted him to go across the street and play the role of a waiter. He
informed her that he'd just turned down a chance to get $1 million because
of Viki and her angel wings sitting on his shoulder. "It felt kinda good,"
he admitted. He also revealed that he'd been thinking about Dorian and how
she must be doing after her and Clint's breakup, so he decided to head to
Llanview. Viki handed him a scratch-off lottery ticket as a going-away
present and advised him to wait until the right time to use it.
Gigi found a jittery Marcie in her hotel room. Marcie explained what
happened with David and that she called Michael. After talking to her
husband, she said she remembered how much she loves him. "I want to be with
him.... I want to go home," she sobbed. Gigi reminded her that she'd be
facing jail time if she did. Regardless of whether Michael comes with her,
she's got to get some money together to head out of town, Marcie decided.
Gigi suggested she take a waitressing job at the café, but Marcie had a few
reservations.
Langston visited La Boulaie and Dorian, who apologized for having to go out
of town. Starr refused to listen to anyone's suggestion about how to
distract herself in Cole's absence. Mrs. Woodrow arrived with the joyous
news that Dorian was officially approved as Langston's foster mother and for
the first time that week, Starr had a smile on her face. Dorian told her new
daughter that she'd have to join them for a Cramer family tradition and go
to the ballet. Dorian also asked Langston to stop calling her "Dr. Lord" and
just refer to her as Dorian. Dorian wanted to celebrate with cupcakes, but
Starr wasn't in a festive mood and ran up to her room.
An overly friendly flight attendant ticked off John and Cole, but got the
hint when Cole snapped at her. "We left someone we care about there," John
said, referring to Ireland. Another flight attendant asked if she could get
anything for John's son. "I'm not his son," said Cole. "I guess I'm nobody's
son." John reminded Cole that his mother saved him by asking John to go
after Cole.
Adriana and Rex knocked on Michael's door, just as some cops came to arrest
Michael, who didn't show up in court. Once David was gone, Viki turned on
the TV and saw a news report about Marty's death, just as Markko was
watching the same report at La Boulaie. Outside, John dropped off Cole and
offered to pick him up later so he can stay at John's place. Cole rang the
doorbell and a relieved Starr leapt into his arms, as John slowly walked
away. Cole began to cry and told Starr, "My mom's dead."
Thursday
Jared was sitting around the Buchanan mansion reading a book on Asa when
Renee came in and asked if she'd missed anything. Jared informed her that
the letter from Asa names Jared as his son. "I knew it," Renee smiled, but
Jared looked genuinely guilty to be fooling his generous friend. She talked
of throwing him a party to welcome him to the Buchanan clan, but Clint
arrived with another idea: "Boot him out of it." Renee wondered if Clint's
anger was more of a reaction to Asa's will. Nora started to pummel Jared
with questions about his past, like his mother's name ("Valerie Banks").
When she was through, Nora received a call from her assistant and was
stunned to hear the news about Marty. "Marty Saybrooke is dead," she told
Clint, who immediately wondered about Cole's state. Nora began to cry and
ran off to find Cole.
At Foxy Roxy's, Miles tallied their community service hours and thanked Roxy
for giving him an alibi when he was questioned regarding Marty's stalking.
Rex and Adriana arrived and asked Roxy if she'd seen Michael since he
skipped his court date. Rex wanted to blame Miles for Michael's predicament,
but Roxy jumped to his defense. A news report came on the TV about Marty's
death. Miles began to cry and ran out.
At Llanfair, Jessica and Nash ran to Natalie's aid as soon as they heard
about Jared. Nash pointed out all the strange coincidental elements of
Jared's arrival and sudden Buchanan identity. "Write him off before he hurts
you," Nash told a too-trusting Natalie. Jess agreed, and was grateful that
Natalie hadn't fallen for the con artist. Natalie informed her sis that she
already had. Later, a sobbing Miles rushed in and told Natalie that Marty
was dead.
At La Boulaie, Blair, Markko and Langston couldn't believe what they'd just
seen on the TV. Todd walked in and asked what was going on, just as Cole
arrived with Starr. Blair gave Cole a tight hug and told him that he meant a
lot to her, no matter what she and Marty had been through. Cole sniffled his
way through the story and shot Todd a curious look as he stood in the
doorway. Blair went to Todd, but Dorian asked her not to go after him.
Dorian was angry that Blair had allowed herself to mix love with this
charade of a marriage. But Blair went after Todd anyway, and found him
sulking outside. Todd explained to Blair that he wanted to steer clear of
Cole since he was probably the last person Cole wanted to see. Blair asked
why, and he exclaimed, "I raped his mother!" Todd felt sorry for giving Cole
such a hard time and for ruining Marty's life. "She deserved so much more
than she got," he lamented, and admitting to being a "jackass" to her until
the very end. Blair advised him that there's nothing he can do to remedy the
situation. Todd even wondered what he was doing trying to rip a child he
barely knew out of a loving family's home! "He's not my son, not in any way
that's meaningful," he said of Tommy. "I don't deserve him."
Inside, Cole told his friends what he was feeling, mainly shock that Marty
was gone and anger that she died under such cloudy circumstances. "Why did
she have to die?" he cried. He started to feel crowded by everyone serving
him tea and hugs, so he stepped out for some air. Starr worried that she'd
done something wrong but Langston assured her that she hadn't and they
headed up to Starr's room to talk. The doorbell rang and Dorian wasn't too
happy to see Nora on her front porch.
On the docks, John ran into Ramsey and was quick to lay the blame on the FBI
agent who shot out the tire in Marty's van. Ramsey felt he saved a lot of
lives by aiding in the capture of eight terrorism suspects. Ramsey called
John a coward and said he had crummy luck with women, prompting John to
practically choke Ramsey. The two men struggled and Ramsey pulled a gun on
his adversary. "You shot the tires out on that van and an innocent woman got
killed," John crowed just as Cole arrived and the gun landed at his feet.
Having heard what John said, Cole picked up the gun and nearly snapped when
Ramsey called him "son." "He killed my mom!" Cole yelled, pointing the gun
at Ramsey.
Friday
Todd told Blair he was leaving her and that she could have the money and the
kids. Blair made it clear to Todd that she and the children don't want him
to go. Blair told Todd that she loves him. "Always have and always will,"
she said.
Noelle and Moe plied Michael with pie (they were preparing for the imminent
bake-off). Charlie arrived and they broke the news that Viki is gone. The
staffers and Charlie advised Michael, on the hunt for his wife and child, to
find Gigi. Charlie demurred when Noelle suggested he phone Viki.
A pensive Viki, her thoughts on Charlie, arrived home in Llanview. Natalie,
Miles, Jessica and Nash were stunned when she walked into Llanfair. Everyone
was worried about what would happen to Cole with Marty gone.
Nora and David both showed up at Dorian's. Dorian announced that she had
been the victim of a hit and run and blasted Nora for poisoning Clint
against her. Nora shot back that Clint was crazy about Nora and Nora had
ruined it by bedding David. Nora wouldn't let Dorian stand in the way of her
taking Cole home with her — but Cole was not there.... David didn't divulge
to Dorian that he'd seen Viki or Marcie. Dorian and David got cozy.
Cole brandished a gun on Ramsey. John begged him to put it down, but Cole was
reeling from the revelation that Ramsey's actions led to Marty's death and
he demanded to know the circumstances of her demise. John stood in front of
Ramsey to block Cole from shooting him, but when Miles arrived and caught
Cole off-guard, Cole ended up firing a bullet into his chest.
Gigi came by Marcie's bearing gifts for Tommy and good news for Marcie:
She'd landed her a waitressing job. Michael knocked on Marcie's door.
