Welcome to Digest Today! Here, expect several-times-daily updates on what we’re working on, who we’re talking to, who’s dropping by the offices, and what’s coming up next in the world of soaps! Check in now, check in often.4:47 PM: Who’s Your Daddy? In the case of Y&R’s Victor (who was raised in an orphanage, remember), it’s going to be George Kennedy, playing the estranged papa, Albert Miller! For those of you who aren’t having your bells rung by that name, check this out: He played Carter on DALLAS (see the photo we’ve got for you, from 1988) and won an Oscar for 1968’s Cool Hand Luke. We can’t wait for the scene where he makes Victor eat 50 eggs! Oh, wait, maybe we’re being confused….Kennedy starts on November 19.See ya tomorrow!2:03 PM: Acting Right There’s recently been buzz about Michael Nader (ex-Dimitri, AMC) in the tabs and on the ‘Net about his latest acting endeavor: Teaching the craft. According to the New York Post, Nader recently placed an ad in the East Hampton Star looking for students, an ad that featured his personal cell phone number (well, you gotta get in touch with him). He told the Post that he’s got 12 students for the six-week, $120 course (which to us sounds like a real steal). Of course, you’ll have to come out to his neck of the woods — the East end of Long Island — so it might not be practical for most people. But we think it’s pretty neat. Look, being an actor isn’t all glamorous award shows, chats with Lisa Rinna and Ty Treadway and mall appearances (er…) — it can be a darned hard profession, not just to learn, but to earn a living in. Suddenly, we’re tempted to rent Waiting for Guffman again….Meanwhile, today’s the “sit tight and wait” day for our news page …. ATWT editor Jen Lenhart is waiting for Tamara Tunie (Jessica), AMC editor Mara Levinsky is crossing her fingers to hear from Eva LaRue (Maria), and B&B editor Devin Owens is just dying to know why Bobbie Eakes‘s (Macy) cell phone suddenly cut out on him when they were talking the other day! Bobbie, phone home!More soon….10:46 AM: Variations On A Theme
How time is told when you’re at home on a brisk fall weekday afternoon and the apartment window is open (this happened to one of us yesterday): From somewhere in the near distance, through another open window, you hear the strains of “Nadia’s Theme.” (Truly one of the most beautiful and enduring soap theme songs.) And suddenly, you think, “Ah, must be 12:30! Time for Y&R!”Speaking of the little ditty, didja know that:
— Originally, the song was taken from a music cue from the 1971 movie Bless The Beasts And The Children, and retitled “Nadia’s Theme” after the Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci used it in floor exercises in the 1976 Olympics.
— You can buy a version of it by the Ventures on vinyl with the “a” side being the classic surf tune “Wipe Out”? We didn’t know that!
— The theme has lyrics? Here they are:
Come, dreams of the past
Come with a love that moves so fast
Come, those shiny days
Caught in a young and restless haze
Why did we love
Then run away
So little time
So much left to say
And now its come
Young and Restless dream
You’ll never pass this way again
Treat the summer wise.
Reach for the stars while you have time
Your restless dreams
Will lead the way
So dream your dream
And live for each day
Young and Restless dream
You’ll never pass this way again
Treat the summer wise.
Reach for the stars while you have time
Your restless dreams
Will lead the way
So dream your dream
And live for each day
