My First Year: Passions's Silvana Arias

Soap Opera Digest: Does it feel like it’s been a year?
Silvana Arias: No, I feel like I just came here. I feel I’ve been in Los Angeles only a couple of months. It’s been a great, wonderful year. I had to leave everything to start a new life; it’s been difficult, but great.

Digest: How do you look back on the past year?
Arias: I think I’ve grown as a human being and professionally. It’s the first time that I’ve lived by myself, with no family, no friends. It’s like starting a new career because it’s the first time I’m acting in English, so I’ve grown a lot. I feel like a totally different person. I feel more mature.

Digest: What has been your favorite scene?
Arias: When Paloma went with Jessica to the club and they were licking those stickers, the drugs. Then we went to the hospital and I started jumping on the bed. Those were my favorite scenes. It was fun to do that. Galen [Gering, Luis] was like, “Oh, my God, that’s not sexy!” He was laughing. Also, because I broke my tooth before taping those scenes. I had a crown and the tooth inside broke. I remember I had like an hour to go to the dentist. In the scene, Dr. Eve gave Paloma something to put in her mouth so she couldn’t bite her tongue. I told [Tracey Ross, Eve], “Please be careful because my tooth is broken.” These are things the fans of the show don’t know, but when you’re taping, you’re thinking about your tooth instead of thinking about your lines.Digest: What was your toughest scene?
Arias: The toughest were the first two months I was on the show because I used to learn my lines phonetically. I had the hardest scenes in my life, in my career. Something else that was hard, in this career you never know what’s going to happen with your schedule. We had to tape at Universal Studios and my best friend was getting married. I was the maid of honor and I couldn’t be with her because that day we had to tape. You have to make a lot of sacrifices in this career — not to be with your mother for Mother’s Day or [her] birthday. It was very hard to be thinking about my friend and I couldn’t be with her.

Digest: What storyline would you like for Paloma?
Arias: I think she needs a boyfriend. She thinks too much about other people’s lives…. She doesn’t have a life of her own. She needs that. When you have a relationship, you grow a lot as a person. She needs that so she can understand her mother and father more. Sometimes children don’t understand the decisions that their parents make, but when you have a special relationship with someone, you can understand more. When someone breaks your heart, you feel like you can understand life more. I think Paloma needs that. A boyfriend would be nice, or maybe two!

Digest: Who would you cast in that role?
Arias: That’s a hard question. I like Orlando Bloom, but he’s not going to accept!
