AMC's James Mitchell (Palmer) died today, Jan. 22, 2010 in LA of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, complicated by pneumonia.

A true legend in PV, and the acting world. I cannot believe he has died, so glad we got to see him one last time on AMC's 40th Anniversary. R.I.P James Mitchell

I am in shock, I am so deeply saddened by his loss. James Mitchell (Palmer) was a phenominal actor and will be miss by everyone. My prayers go out to his family, friends, co-workers and fans who cherished and loved him. I for one was hoping he would come back to AMC, I did not know that he was sick. R.I.P. James Mitchell. You are loved and Missed.

James Mitchell was a class act. A little more of AMC's glorious past is gone forever.

He was one of the few last talented, classy, and entertaining stars of AMC. I adored him and Daisy and wished she had come back to the show so I could watch them interact again. You will be missed JM

I am so sorry to hear this. I had the great fortune to interview him for my college paper years ago. His character was such a baddie, but he was a sweetheart to me and my sister. Thank you, James, for your fine work and sparkling personality.

Okay, not being mean or maybe I am, but so what if he was gay.......JM was an extremely talented actor.... He had grace, integrity, and was/is loved by many....Maybe, I'm being a bit sensitive here, but your post just bothered me....JM will be missed......as is Palmer and I hope TPTB acknowledge JM/Palmer.....but I doubt they will...TK had to fight to get EH/Myrtle a decent send off from the show...It makes me very, very sad to see those who made Soaps what they are leaving us..... Many had passed away in recent years....The loss of EH and now JM just makes me feel that daytime truly will never be the same.....

There's nothing to get upset about. I was just stating that I didn't know those things about him. I didn't know anything about him really. I wouldn't have been able to tell you the name of the actor who played Palmer Cortland.

I wouldn't have been able to tell you the name of the actor who played Palmer Cortland. He was a great actor and that is part of who he was. I understand you saying you didn't know it, neither did I. I always kind of thought so but didn't make a difference to me. Talent or not. You posting he was gay was just telling us about his personal life, nothing bad. I hope he was happy. I will miss him so much. I also hope that AMC does the right thing and does a tribute show to him. I know he was very close to Peter Bergmann, they talked everyday. I hope if they do a tribute show somehow they include him. Cliff could come home for a day. I know he is Jack on Y&R but for me he will always be Cliff. God Bless James, you will be missed. And much sympathy to his family on and off screen.

I am saddened deeply by James' death. He was a class act...and a part of a dying breed of stars. He will be missed by fan and friends alike.Palmer was such a snarfy character! What saddens me more is that AMC will kill the character off. Besides Opal, there is no family in town, from what I read. So, it will become the Ryan and Eric mourning hour. THAT is the true travesty here.I am hoping - and I KNOW I will be lambasted for this - that AMC takes the time to recast Palmer so the legendary character James Mitchel created endures on a while longer. Look at the sucess GH had with Edward Quartermaine.Rest in Peace James Mitchell.

He was one of my favorite actors on that show EVER. I loved his witty combacks and his interaction with Adam and everyone else he was snippy with like Opal. The character was GREAT and the ACTOR behind him made him that way. Never could anyone replace Palmer Cortland with another actor. I am deeply saddened by his death. He is more than a LEGEND in the soap.

I have to politely disagree. While the actor was indeed great in the role, let us not forget that Palmer is a lengendary character that could live on in the hands a another great actor IF the time is taken to search for the right gentleman with the right 'Palmer-like' qualities.I think GH should have dome the same for Lila Quartermaine.

I would love to keep Palmer on the show forever also. I think out of respect for the actor they very well may not. But ya never know palmer could get a plastic surgery makeover, but will never be the same with a new character in my opinion.

I agree with you Paul, but I think they will have to write it so he is gone for a substantial length of time before the recast that way they could pave the way for someone new to try fill a very difficult pair of shoes. This has been some what successful on the Y. & R. but they will have to give it some time before it happens.I to will miss his character and the actor he was a great asset to the show.

GH worked because the actor retired, didn't die at the time...James Mitchell is Palmer, sorry but he is. I think they need to do a tribute show to him. IF they need a character like him don't do a recast just make a new one that could be a relative of his, a cousin or something. Please, no recast it is insulting to the character, the actor and the people who worked with him. Sorry.

I am going to have to agree with you mkvo463. I don't think a recast in this situation is the right move to make. Palmer was a very rich and powerful man. I'm sure that there are some long lost relatives of his that could come out of the woodworks. It would make a much more interesting story. Plus, it would possibly give Opal something to worry about, being that she and Palmer had a history together. I don't believe that any actor, in my opinion, would be able to fill James Mitchell's shoes. They should pay tribute to him, much like they did for Mona when she passed, and leave it like that. This would also give us an opportunity to possibly see Nina again. Please AMC, make the right move on this one.

Agree, how about the new guy be a good match for our Opal so she might get herself a new love interest. That would be interesting no?

Let's agree to disagree! BTW...I think Mona should have been recast as well. There was too much story potential there. But, based on what I've read, Palmer will die, and there will be a tribute in the spring.Know what would be really cool? If TPTB were able to work a deal with TPTB over at Y&R to let Peter Bergman play Cliff for one day. Now THAT would be an industry tribute! But alas....I know the reality!

That would be really nice. I read that Peter Bergman and James Mitchell were really close, so I'm sure he would be willing to go along with a tribute, but I doubt very seriously that CBS would even consider that idea....but who knows

Peter playing Cliff for one day would be the most amazing gift in the world to James Mitchell and his fans. I could cry thinking of it. James was a part of Peter's family. They were so close and it would be so wonderful. Maybe we can dream...

What would be even more Wonderful would be if they found a way to work Dorothy Lyman in as well. She was the First Opal, for all you newbies out there...Imagine the story that could spin from Palmer's death. Maybe they won't make it a footnote.
