Quote:Ah ha. So THAT's what the ET people were filming. It was kind of funny, because the rest of us were all sitting outside bemoaning being "chopped liver." "Oh, we're not special like ET...wahhhhhh." Just kidding! I felt plenty special. As far as I know, Jake Silbermann is not going anywhere. As for storylines getting more interesting... I know we will see a lot more integration, stories intersecting, but whether or not it will pick up the pace or be more palatable is up to viewers! I can't speak to what people with Nielsen boxes will like! Thank You for the info Mala.Good to hear that Jake is staying, did not really think he was leaving, but still good to know that he is not. Also love that finally characters will be interacting and storylines, I know that won't fix all the shows problems, but I bet it goes a long way towards doing so, because as it stands right now, ATWT sadly does not even resemble a soap opera in my eyes. Like Anthony was saying the idea that no one in Oakdale knows about Luke/Noah/Amerra/Winston being in New York is just plain nuts, even for this show, LOL.
Another snap to what Anthony said. Once again, everyone is living in their own little bubble world. I'm hopeful that will improve...*crosses fingers*
Thanks for the info Mala. So it sounds like they aren't that worried about the ratings yet. It's funny after CG saying they couldn't afford to have stories intersect more that is what they will do. That may help a little but if the viewers just don't like the stories, having them intersect isn't going to help all that much. Lily and Holden should have been heavily involved in the Nuke story and it would have made more sense than this dreadful quad. It could have been some good story for Jon if he was taking on Winston.I only know one person that has a Nielsen box and in the last couple of weeks they have stopped watching on a regular basis. And if they do watch it's not the same day anymore. so it doesn't even count. They used to try to watch live. I'd be surprised from what they say if just having more characters interact will change that.
I can see why ATWT's ratings are plummeting - deservedly so in my opinion.I would gather that Martha's departure has hit the show harder then they imagined it might. I can guess that, along with all the other departures over the past year, was perhaps the straw that broke the camel's back for many viewers.Combine that with the fact that new characters are being force fed down peoples throats. Liberty was in 14 episodes in May, surpassing everyone in the cast. There are probably tons of fan favorites that have never been in 14 episodes in a month (Luke and Henry, perhaps, I would guess, are two examples), yet this BRAND NEW character pops up and is featured more than anyone on the show, and more than people who've been on the show for years? Talk about a great way to get people to HATE the character and start disliking the show!I know I saw this just on the net, but many people online were upset about CG's interview a few weeks back in the soap press. I wonder if some were upset enough to stop watching?Combine this with silly and/or confusing storylines, and you have a recipe for disaster. The saddest thing about all of this is that the writers had months off during the strike in which they could have taken to think of great and novel storylines for these characters and actors. Unfortunately, at least to me, it seems as if they didn't seem to do that. Here's hoping things improve, but I won't count on it.
I think you have to add to that whether the show wants to admit it there are a ton of CarJack fans out there and the show seems to expect them to keep watching no matter what. In reality though they pushed it too far this time and a lot of them are tuning out in the last couple of weeks. They just feel like they have been jerked around too long. When things seemed headed in the right direction, they were willing to wait it out but this became the final straw. And the current story is more of a reminder that we lost Martha because we know they never would have gone there if Martha were still playing Lily. If they wanted viewers to accept new Lily, they should have had her reconnect with her entire family including Holden before they created angst.
Mala,There is a rumor that Jesse Soffer will be returning for a few episodes this summer. Can you say anything regarding if this true or not?One more question, any chance that we will see more of Lucinda this summer? Elizabeth Hubbard is a fabulous actress, and it is ashame that the writers don't give her more material to work with.
Right now all I care about are Luke and Noah and Holden and Carly and possibly Casey and Emily. These rest is so bad. Mala, I'd love to hear more from Maura and Jon on how they feel about their new storyline. I am enjoying them together so much.
DarlaM - I'll look into the Jesse Soffer rumor.
DemiAshton - I don't know about Maura because I haven't talked to her lately, but Jon seems to be having a blast with both her and Noelle. He mentioned in an interview he did with us a few weeks back that it's like playing a whole new character, a whole new side to Holden.
As for the ratings decline... I'm sure there are myriad factors, and I wouldn't necessarily blame CarJack's split, just because that's the same as saying "Oh, the ratings dropped because Nuke didn't kiss." I think Carjackers are a bigger fanbase, absolutely, but, again, the whole Nielsen box thing is weird and we don't know what Nielsen families are watching for. Maybe they're Henry fans? LOL. We just don't know.
Mala, I know you said that Noah would act like a clueless jerk a bit longer, but how much longer? His behavior has gotten so unpalatable that I'm afraid fans will not want he and Luke together anymore. I mean, how much more verbal and emotional abuse does Luke have to take from this guy? I mean, today, Noah didn't seem to even care that Luke was actually alive and unharmed as he was more concerned about Ameera. Is Noah going to see the light before it's too late?
Now that the horrible Ameera storyline, a storyline that was written about as poorly as anything I've ever seen on tv, which never made any sense at all, is just about over, I'm looking forward to the future, though I have no idea why!I really hope that, if you have the chance Mala, and if you so desire, you take it to this show in print for the horrible job they did with the character of Ameera. She was so poorly written, I feel sad for Ms. Ashe. The show should also be taken to task for this horrible storyline in my opinion. What depresses me the most is that, considering all the mainstream press that FANS of the show got the show over this storyline, if any people turned in during this storyline to see what the fuss was about, the show completely lost the chance to acquire tons of new viewers because of two main reasons - 1) the storyline is/was/and forever will be basically on one day a week max and 2) if they turned and saw just how bad things were in this SL, there's no way they would turn back in for the next episode to see what followed! If they were airing well written and interesting stories, they might have actually picked up fans! But instead, they shot and aired this horrible storyline, and I've got to be honest, if I was just a casual viewer that turned in to see the show as a result of reading about it in the newspaper or CNN, there's no way I would tune back in again. I would wonder what the fuss was all about.I know the internet doesn't represent all viewers watching, but I've scoured the net looking for one person that really enjoyed this storyline, and I've yet to find that person. That is quite disheartening to me. I guess I will hope that Ms. Lauper not only works her magic on Noah and Luke on July 3rd, but also on the writers.
I know what you mean. When I watching it, I thought Noah's behavior was unacceptable. He never once asked how Luke was or even this whole mess with his so-called marriage is affecting him. Noah is suppose to be in love with Luke but he is definitely not acting like it. If I was Luke I would walk away. Let Noah make the next move. Is ATWT trying to make Noah straight agian with Ameera? God, I hope not. and I don't think that is even possible or believeable.
I don't think they're trying to turn Noah straight at ALL, so you guys don't have to worry about that. Being kind to a woman doesn't make a gay man hetero. I actually appreciate that Noah cares about Ameera, because, well, nobody else did! And NoahFan, I did write about the Ameera mishandling in print, though not at length, like I did in my blog.As for the writing for Noah and Noah being a clueless jerk...I'm probably not the right person to ask. To me, Noah is just so shut down, so tightly wound, that I, as a viewer, have a hard time connecting to him. I want to like Noah more than I actually do, and I've felt that way since last summer. I kinda want Luke to throw up his hands, give up, and play the field! I mean, they're barely nineteen, I don't think they should have a commitment ceremony and adopt golden retrievers yet anyway!Too bad the field has no other gay men on it. LOL.In any case, Noah and Luke have some issues to work through and it will take them well into the Cyndi Lauper appearance.

What I do mind is that it came at Luke's expense and that Noah seemed to not really care whether Luke was hurting or not.I like Noah despite the fact that he's so difficult to penetrate emotionally, but I think that Luke needs to move on or at least see what else is out there. Noah has WAY too many issues that Luke clearly can't solve or handle. And maybe if Luke were to actually date and there was a real chance he might lose Luke, it might be the wake up call that Noah needs.

But now that the SL is wrapping up and her character continued to be written in such a poor manner, perhaps even worse then it had been, I thought you might want to take them to task at length in print. Not that I want to influence what you should write about , it's just that I think you wrote so well about Ameera in the past that it would be great to hear your final thoughts on what the writers did with this character.
While I agree the writing for Ameera has been bad, I hardly think it's an isolated situation on the show. 99% of the characters are written badly. How ridiculous that Carly and Lily needed big strong Holden to light the grill for them! Why are women always written as so dependent and needy when a huge portion of the audience is women? Do the writers really think this is appealing to the women watching? I think there is a lot the writers could be taken to task for and bigger issues than the writing for Ameera.
You know, I can understand Lily not knowing to light the grill, but Carly? She was raised on a farm in Muscle Shell. She should be able to do alot more then what Lily is able to. I personally think Ameera was better with Casey. They had spark. I have read several post about Paul and Sophie (not that I'm a fan of the duo) and their age difference, but what about Casey and Emily? Emily is practically robbing the craddle again. After all, she is supposed to be older than Paul. I think ATWT need to make their women stronger. That is why I like Lucinda. She is one tough cookie though I think she's even mellowed since her illness.
It's probably because it's something close to my heart, but I think the writing for Ameera was a pretty big issue, since they fumbled the portrayal of daytime's first obviously Muslim woman.
But, yeah, woman across the board in daytime don't fare well. Not being able to light the grill is just the tip of the iceberg. Soap women can't do anything without a man, can't have fulfilling jobs and lives without husbands and babies, and must always, always, kowtow to someone. Even the "powerhouse women" like your Erica Kanes and Viki Lords... they're defined by the men in their lives. All you ever hear is Erica-and-Jackson and "When will Viki get with a man?" As if they're not valid without a love story.
Way to reach out to a woman like me who is single, childless, professional, and can probably figure out how to light a goshdarned grill on her own!
It's why I love Big Lucy! She's a rare breed in daytime! (Though she has kids, which is perfectly fine...and I'm not saying daytime women shouldn't...)
I guess at the tech emmy awards, CZP (Barbara) said the next few months will be classic ATWT.I am really hoping so.
Did you see today? With Kim versus Susan? It was AWESOME.
I haven't seen today yet, but I love seeing all the vets more! LOVED Barbara and Lucinda yesterday.
Barbara and Lucinda, Kim and Susan, Lisa had lines... I'm in shock, I tell you! Shock! It's a veritable vet-palooza!
Van said in an interview that Luke will be contacted by someone from his past who he may not want to be contacted by. This will lead them into their next story. Any idea who this could be? Damian? Kevin? And would Paolo Seganti come back now that Martha is no longer Lily?
I agree. Just goes to prove that we don't need a bunch of no-talent newbies, just some characters with a rich history and family connections to make good story.
Quote:Did you see today? With Kim versus Susan? It was AWESOME. Today was excellent. Yesterday was fantastic. It would be nice if I could say that about my soap everyday. When I watch an episode and not even Paul and Meg can bother me and I can actually be interested in their story (cause I'm digging crazy Sofie) then the writing is particularly good that day. Here's hoping for three in a row!
Mala according to the ATWT newsletter, Rick Decker returns on July 15. Do you have any idea how long he will be sticking around? Hopefully more than one day?I loved him! He just might make me keep watching at least some of this show if he sticks around.

I'm not sure but I've read somewhere that they're good friends and that his reasons for his last return was for the most part because of Martha. But maybe he really loved working with Van and would come back to work with him.
Mala,There's a new spoiler out for the boys that says Noah tells Luke that he loves him, but is joining the military (to which Luke should say 'see ya', because that's just TOO much). Since we've heard Jake isn't leaving and you said in an earlier post that the guys will have lots of story this summer could you give us a hint as to how this is going to work? Is Noah actually going to enlist? Is he going to drop out at the last minute? Can you tell us a little something?
I really can't tell you guys much more than I or the magazine already have about Rick Decker or Nuke. I cannot confirm or deny spoilers. I gotta keep my job, folks! However, I will ask around about whether or not Paolo is returning and check into whether or not Jake is flying the coop after all.
Thanks Mala!I really don't think Jake is leaving. Van said in an interview that he's pretty sure they will both be around for quite awhile. So this enlisting is just another bump in the road to them getting back together.
The latest SID says that a spokesperson for the show insists Jake isn't going anywhere.
Mala, are you or anyone else from SOW/SOD going to make Emmy predictions this year? I have not seen any like in year's past.
Jake's co-presenting at the Emmys with Van, the storyline has mega buzz. Even if Noah has to go on some angsty self-discovery journey for a while, it would be a pretty bad business move to make that a permanent exit. At least not until they bring some other hot guy on for Luke. LOL.DemiAshton - Yeah, we didn't really make any predictions this year, did we? Oops. Personally, I have absolutely no clue who's going to take it home, so I wouldn't even presume to predict. I'm blatantly rooting for everybody from ATWT, of course.

Hmm.... that sounds like Noah's leaving for basic training or something and then he'll be back. UGH! Why in the world would Luke wait for him? And with the ratings the way they are, why would the show drop the storyline for six weeks or so? And in the middle of summer? I think the show is taking a major risk. When Noah returns, viewers may not care. And I bet while Noah's away we see very little of Luke. Good job, ATWT!

Mala said IF Noah is going away for awhile.
I agree with Mark. Also it seems like the fantasy episodes are done kinda opposite compared to the storyline that they are hinting to. For example, in the Christmas fantasy episode Noah wasn't married but he was engaged but in the actual storyline he does get married. In the Valentine's Day fantasy Noah was in the military and wasn't out to anyone until he met Luke in New York. So I don't see Noah going any where.
Thanks, Mark. Yes, that was just me speculating! IF! IF! I have no insider knowledge about upcoming story that I can share at this time. Just generalities.
Okay...... maybe I read too much in what you weren't saying or read between the lines or something. Let's just hope the show isn't going to have Noah off screen for any period of time. It's a real danger in killing the story. The only way it would work for me would be if Luke and Noah had a complete and total break with Luke thinking Noah was gone for good. Then Luke would meet someone else and develop a relationship with them, one totally different from the one he and Noah had. We could see Luke moving and falling for this new guy. And then Noah could come back and we could have a triangle. But to have Noah leave and Luke vow to wait for him and have him spending the summer pining for him... I can't tell you how much I despise even the idea of that.
Yes, I think this is a good stance to take for now. As I mentioned in another thread, JP stated that the boys summer storyline would be "very romantic," and I don't see Noah going away for a month or two as being romantic in any way. Nor do I see what's on my screen as being romantic right now either. If the head writer of the show said this is going to happen, well, I would like to think she is telling the truth so this is what I'm going to be looking for this summer. It would be a nice change from all the intense drama these poor kids have been through in the past year!
Okay, in lieu of Emmy predictions, I actually decided to give out fake awards!Check out my silliness: http://soapoperadigest.com/opinions/mala/
Quote:Okay, in lieu of Emmy predictions, I actually decided to give out fake awards!Check out my silliness: http://soapoperadigest.com/opinions/mala/ Those were fun! I agree with you about Emmy predictions. Why bother since the results are always so.... odd? Let's face it, the nominations themselves were pretty strange!
Seriously. I mean, I love my CBS soaps and all, but the lack of very many ABC acting nominations just makes the process seem unbalanced. It's like running the Belmont Stakes without half the horses! (Not that actors are horses. I just saw a horse on Y&R so I have them on the brain.)
Oh, today was pretty bad. The worst day of the week by far. Do the TPTB know that fans don't care for Janet and they DON'T want to see Brad and Katie consumed by this woman? What happened to the funny and sexy couple who JUST got married? They're gone already!?And the dialogue for Holden and Carly is sooooo treacly and and cliched. It's like a romance novel... a really, really bad one. And I HATE that Holden is lying to Lily when he dumped her because of her lies.I'm sorry, but the Parker and Liberty thing... putting this 15 year old boy in the sexual situations... it's giving me a case of the icks. I hope the show actually addresses that it's too soon for Parker to have sex. And could Luke get some first?
Anthony, I agree with your comments. Brad and Katie got about 5 minutes of bliss. Conflict is a necessary evil of soapland and to do it so soon after the wedding lends more credibility to the story. Katie and Brad haven't had the chance to really establish the marriage bond and since jealously comes easier during this time it is believable that Janet could cause some unrest. Holden and Lily are just plain boring. There is no spark there but to add Carly to the mix doesn't set the screen on fire quite like Simon. And, when does a soap character ever walk the talk (i.e., Holden keeping secrets).Libby and Parker are a bit young for the direction the story is going; however, it will bring Carly back into Jack's radar as they try to cope with the kids aging. Another thought..... When Sophie jumped back into bed with Cole is anyone surprised at next week's plot line?
I agree with your comments as well. Holden and Carly have too much history, he of not wanting to put up with nonsense, her with giving out plenty, never mind her friendship with Lily and that he and Jack act more like brothers than Jack and Brad, but I ramble.I don't understand the whole sixteen years later, I find the father of my baby and he is still the man of my dreams. Sixteen years is a long time and a lot of maturing happens when you become a parent, let alone a single parent, so Janet, and Natalia on GL, I don't understand why you would have never moved on with your life. Maybe if they were introduced and it was a little more organic as they see how their baby daddies bond with their newfound children, their feelings would begin to resurface, maybe at least being a widow or divorcee, not having seemingly staying single, pining away for their baby daddy.Goodness, please address that Parker and Liberty are getting in over their heads. Something! There is some uproar on the boards about the teen pregnancy on OLTL, but at least Starr acknowledges that they were stupid, thinking they were never going to see each other again, not thinking of birth control when she got pregnant. Also, that she can barely operate a car, let alone raise a baby.Ew ew ew! Sophie pregnant? She obviously didn't learn after giving her baby away for adoption just months ago. I hope she is lying.More Hughes and Stewarts! This storyline is showcasing the talents of quite a few veterans and giving the newbies and Aaron some valuable screen time with core characters.
But isn't it true to life that 15 year olds have sex. I mean, Think back to the first time you had sex, when your friends started having sex. It was around 15 maybe 16 year old. I kinda agree that pining away over baby daddy for 16 years is a long time. You would think she had found another man to love and grew to maturity during this time. Not act like a teenager herself. Janet has to go I think. This new Lily is rather boring. Too soft spoken. And isn't Holden now being a hypocrit? He didn't like Lily keeping secrets but it's ok for him to. And if he didn't like Lily's schemes, he isn't going to like it with Carly any better. I saw the previews where Sophie tells Paul she's pregnant. Apparently she hasn't learned anything from Cole. You can't keep a man by being pregnant. If she is pregnant, it could be Cole's again. And a sonogram can tell how far long she is, so it's less than a 2 weeks it isn't Paul's.
We are from a different generation. My circle of friends from a Catholic school did not start having sex as a Freshman or Sophmore; maybe that is how the girls act during this day and age but it doesn't make it right. Kids grow up far too fast now. I hate to get preachy but part of the problem with society is that we have to "accept" everything just because a segment of society has lowered the moral compass. Just reading about the girls in MA who made the pact to get pregnant is digusting. No wonder another generation of kids are messed up. Kids raising kids..... my rant is over now. I think DNA will seal Sophie's fact.
Hey, if society's moral compass is broken, it didn't happen overnight and it certainly didn't happen with this current crop of children. You'd have to look at least two generations back to see where those seeds got sown. Also, teen sexuality and pregnancy isn't a 21st century problem. I'm pretty sure that's been going on ever since the caveteens figured out where their parts go.
Mala, did you get to go to the Emmys? And really this has nothing to do with much but something you said a month or so ago on here, still has me laughing every time I think of it. You said Carly and Lily "can't start the grill" so they're dependent on a man to rescue them all the time. So I still laugh about that, and really that phrase you invented should be worked into the English language to mean a woman very dependent on being rescued all the time. Kinda like "Jumped the Shark" from Happy Days means "Boy they screwed up." Like for example, in a sentence, "Wow, that Janet can't start the grill, can she? Look at Brad coming to her rescue!" You should keep using the phrase you invented, it's great.
One more off the wall thing, I think Justine C. is doing a great job as a bad girl, it makes me want them to keep her and also get Scott Bryce back to match her up with. Thank you for having the best forum on here of all, and for posting here all the time which makes it interesting. I like reading what you have to say, both in the magazine and in this forum too.
Hey, LuthersCorners! No, sadly I didn't get to go the Emmys. I watched them while at home in my pajamas, like most people did.I can't take sole credit for the whole "can't start the grill" conversation. That was a group effort! I'm glad you enjoy the board and my presence here. I want to keep this a lively community, where fans of all kinds can share their thoughts.
