Mala, can you tell me when your interview with Liz about GTST is going to be published? I just read on the official GTST twitter that they interviewed her for GTST.nl. Can't wait to read her thoughts on the show.
Is the (Vote For Soaps' Most Fascinating Couple!) still running or has it stopped you guys just have not yet taken it down?
Mala, is there any chance that you or someone else might have a chance to do a hard hitting interview w/ JP or CG?We all know the way the show is currently constituted, it will be not be on the air after 2010. I think the fans would love to see them asked if they're worried about the imminent cancellation, if they're now going to finally start listening to fans about what they HATE about the show, and what they would like to see on the show, etc. It would be great if someone could ask them if they're going to change anything to help and please their viewers, instead of constantly and consistently pissing them off. You or someone else would obviously ask these questions in a much more PC way then I just stated, but still, I think these questions really need to be asked, and now is the time to ask them before the show gets canceled and they're out of jobs. There won't be any reason to interview them then.I understand a reason a soap magazine might not want to give a hard hitting interview, which perhaps might piss off a show and lead them to not making available their talent for interviews. However, since the show is going to be canceled soon, who cares if the show was stubborn and stopped making available their talent for interviews. It's not like the talent will be needed for interviews much longer the way things are going. It's do or die time for this show, for the genre, and for the soap magazines. It would be great if the soap mags started to put more of a mirror towards the shows like ATWT...shows that are going to be canceled very very soon in the hopes that the shows bother to look at the mirror and realize what they're doing wrong, and also realize how to go about fixing things.
NoahFan, if there's one thing I've learned from reading interviews with CG and JP, it's that you never feel enlightened after reading them. You feel worse, in fact. JP always answers anything BUT the actual question. And no matter what his intentions are, Goutman will only continue to build a wall between him and the fans. In a interview last year, he claimed the poor budget was the reason family members don't interact on the show anymore and why storylines don't intersect anymore. In that same interview, he also said he does not care what the fans think. I don't know if he was joking or not when he said that but I sure wasn't laughing. Reading interviews with these people will only make you feel worse. It's a shame too because many hold them responsible for the current state the show is in.
Mala, I noticed the show is using a new logo in their promotional ads and video's online. Do you know if they might use that logo on the actual show too?
I've noticed they are also using it as their avatar on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Since there is supposedly a new opening in the works, I'm guessing it will be part of that. Supposedly they are redoing the official site too so I'm guessing it will pop up there too.I also have to say it's terrific to see banner ads and promos popping up for Rosanna's return. It's always made me nuts that they bring people back and never promote it. Looks like maybe the new PR firm is helping!
Even though we already know what their answers most likely will be, that doesn't mean they shouldn't be asked. But I guess the soap press, just like the fans, CG, JP, etc. are all going to stand by and watch yet another soap disappear without ever thinking "is there anything we could do to at least try to stop this from happening?" I guess most people already see the dominos as already being on the way down, and hence too late to save. It's too bad, really.
It would be nice if the show had an actual opening again. The current format isn't even an opening. It's just the title of the show with the sound of the world exploding. I can't believe they have been using it for over a year. Then again, ATWT has so many other bigger problems they need to fix. But a new opening couldn't hurt.
Mala, I just read your interview with Liz. I really enjoyed it! I can't wait to see her. Just three more weeks... LOL! It will be fun to hear her speak a little Dutch (she did speak a few words before on talk shows). The official GTST Twitter mentioned that today is her last day at GTST. She has been filming for two weeks, but I think it might be longer when it airs. Ferry Doedens who plays Lucas on the show started a week before Liz, but they both first appear during the same week. Seems like they worked around Liz' schedule.
I was just going to come online and post the link, Mark! I'm glad you already read it and enjoyed it! When she spoke Dutch on the phone, it was so cool! I bet it'll be even more awesome to see her do it on air.
I really enjoyed the interview too Mala. Liz sounds like she is really enjoying this. I notice she mentioned having a website but I sure have never found one for her. Are you able to find out the web address by any chance? She might get even more hits if people knew about it!
I'm glad to hear Liz is spreading her wings a bit! I'm also glad to hear she likes Holland.Once ATWT is canceled in a few months, hopefully the show will have had such positive feedback from her appearance that she might, perhaps, be asked back, maybe even for a regular role? Doubtful it would happen, but it's still always good to have a backup plan, or at least a potential backup plan, I think!
Mala will you have information soon on the new character that Vanessa Ray is playing? They have pictures of her at cbs.com from the softball game and it sounded like they introduced her as playing Terri on ATWT but yet there's now word out there about her lol. She looks younger than Liberty so is she a new love interest for Parker?
The first spoilers for Liz' character on GTST were released today:
* Irene gets a visit from someone she doesn't like.
* Irene's mother causes a commotion in the Huygens house right away.
Yay! So excited!
And yeah, I'd like to know more about Vanessa Ray's character too.
Hey Mala,I remember reading JP saying that Jade would have an upcoming storyline where we see her grow when she discussed May sweeps/ Summer spoilers. Do you know if this is all going to happen offscreen? Where is Jade? And why do I get the feeling TPTB are going to have Riley & Alison hook up? Why is Alison the friendly port for all men under 30 and Meg for all men over 30? There are so many single women on this show that have no love interests... when they're even allowed onscreen... but almost every guy is panting after Meg or Alison. What going on with that? Better yet, when will it end?? PS: It's nice that there has been more of Bonnie & that she doesn't simper around Dusty but I think TPTB missed the boat my not doing Derek/Bonnie/Dusty for a while.
So... I'm still super excited for Liz' guest stint as Sair on GTST. Only one more week!
Her character has been mentioned twice this week, which was great. I loved the scene they showed in today's previews for Monday. In the scene Sair's granddaughter Ronja asks someone (Rik) if he has seen her brother Dex. When that person asks why, this happens:
Ronja: "Sair is coming to the Netherlands."
Rik: "Cher? Is she giving a concert here?"
Hey, at least they're both diva's! I thought it was funny.
Thank you, Mala, for mentioning the ridiculous absence of Jade on the show in your most recent column and how she does indeed fit a niche that is sorely underrepresented right now.Do you know what the deal is with the character and if we'll see Jade again soon, especially now that Adam is back in town (even in disguise)? The second to last thing I want to see on this show is another man falling under the spell of Alison. YAWN.
hi Mala, thanx for the Jade commentary also. When it was announced she would JOIN THE CAST, I was led to believe she would be frontburning. Couldn't Casey and her have lasted longer? How did so many babes fall by the wayside for Casey and Ali to conintue for this long?BTW, appreciated the Greek article...however, Greek does get mainstream press despite being on cable. Spencer was in Maxim and Glamour this spring, and the Greek babes were featured in InStyle (with Leighton Meester on the cover) and also in Entertainment Weekly on their Must List with Ryan Reynolds on the cover.
Mala, I just read your blog on Ali and Hunter. I didn't have a huge problem with the kissing siblings. When they kissed they didn't know they were related and to me it's realistic that Hunter's feelings are all messed up now. That doesn't just change with a simple DNA test. He's going through so much right now. His mother dies, he learns that Emily is his real mother and that he's related to the girl he's in love with. That would mess up everyone. And it was just kissing. It's not like they had sex (A mother and son were in a relationship including sex for months before they found out he was her biological son).If Ali and Hunter decide to be a couple anyway... that's when I will have a problem with the story.Oh and BTW, did you see Liz Hubbard's scenes on GTST? What did you think? It's too bad Friday was the season finale. Now we'll have to wait until Sept. 7 for the rest of the storyline.
A mother and son having sex? Yeesh, Mark. You and your wacky European soaps! I haven't gotten a chance to see Liz's scenes on GTST yet, but I want to make some time to do so! I bet she's a riot!smokey - Glad you liked the GREEK article. I guess when I meant it doesn't get press, I meant in the show content sense. Obviously with its marketable crop of good-looking women, it's going to have a presence in high profile magazines, but no one's giving it its due for its quality, you know?Bonobochick, I am so desperate for Jade to run into Adam. However, she's apparently vanished for a while. I would love to see her back on the canvas. On the bright side, while I share your fear about Adam falling for Alison, too, I don't think it's going that way...yet. LOL.
I was bothered by Hunter and Ali kissing. I don't know why they can freely show two siblings kissing and we know they are, yet they still have problems showing a same sex kiss with Luke and Noah. They haven't kissed in awhile. Is incest more accepted than homosexuality? Mala, do you know anything about the upcoming Nuke/Mason story and the status of their apartment? They keep talking about it and tomorrows episode even talks about them moving into it, but why can't we see them moving into it? Is there some kind of taboo about seeing Luke and Noah living together, even not doing anything sexual? Is it so taboo they can't even show them folding laundry or washing dishes?

I don't think Hunter and Alison count since they didn't know they were related until after they kissed. Also I don't think that the show is scared to show anything between Luke/Noah. As far as the apartment goes when we finally see it then it will more than likely be apart of the temporary sets. Although I would like to see Susan's and Bob/Kim's houses again. As for the Mason storyline the show has done a pretty good job at not revealing too much before it airs.
Quote:A mother and son having sex? Yeesh, Mark. You and your wacky European soaps! Yeah, it happened during a time when I didn't think the show was very good. They had more whacky storylines around that time. But the show improved a lot (especially this past season). I think you will enjoy Liz' scenes. It was really cool and weird at the same time to see her walk around that GTST set. So far she interacted with the characters Irene, Dex, Ronja and Barbara. Since the character integration is really good on this show, I hope she'll share scenes with more characters next season. That would be fun.
I know they didn't know, but the audience knew or had a general idea. Are the viewers more comfortable watching incest than two men kissing? Yes Susan and Kim/Bob should have a place to live too. We have seen where they lived before. Luke and Noah are a young couple about to move in together for the first time. They normally show couples in their new apartment when they move in to it. It is a big step for this couple to take. They did it with Brad and Katie, they show where Henry and Vienna live. It seems they are not wanting to show two guys in a gay relationship living together, even just hanging out in their kitchen.
I expected the show to screw us over with the Nuke apartment and never show it to us. But now that they actually showed us where Hunter lived, I demand that we see it even if it's only a few episodes. The main problem that still remains with Luke and Noah is the lack of screen time apartment or no apartment. And I can't believe that's it's still an issue over 2 years later. Noah turns his dad into the police, then 8 episodes pass before we see him again. The boys were on today and I'm sure several episodes will pass again before the Forbes March debut. It's beyond stupid. It makes the story disjointed. We better see that apartment. If not, it's yet another slap in the face from TPTB.
You're not the only one who wants to see Luke and Noah in their apartment! I want to see them in their too, even if it is a temp set. Do you think it is the same issue as the kissing/sex? They only want to imply it? There is no reason they can't show them in their apartment, even doing completely innocent and unsexy activities. Maybe they can listen to an ABBA cd together? However in the previews, they were both at Lily's. Noah was telling Luke he couldn't use his script. Plus spoilers indicate they won't be spending much time together. Wouldn't it be something if the only time they spent together was at their unseen apartment? Luke and Noah are together, you just never see it! They won't have scenes together on the show for months! I agree with you about the disjointed nature of their storyline. That's why it's going to be a mess that makes no sense if Noah cheats w/ Professor Mason. The long periods between episodes and the cramming everything into one episode really hurts the characters.
Honestly, I think it's a budgetary issue and not a "Luke and Noah can't have an apartment" issue. If the latter was the case, they wouldn't be scripting in discussions about moving in together.
It's already been mentioned, but plenty of people don't have actual places to live. Jack and Janet, who have been talking about building a house, don't have one yet. A bajillion people live at the Lakeview and the farm. Despite the complaints about Hunter, his abode was shown all of once, and I'm pretty sure that was the Wagon Wheel set, so he's been crashing at the Oakdale no-tell motel.
We never see the Stewart house anymore, Bob and Kim haven't had a house in all the years I've been watching, Barbara's apartment in Lakeview Towers is never seen, etc.
The fact is, it's more cost effective to keep up several stock sets and do everything on them: Fairwinds, Al's, Java, the Hughes living room, Lily's living room, etc. It involves money and manpower to move all those props and set pieces around, and it's certainly not in ATWT's budget to build entirely new sets.
ETA - Okay, so after today's episode I see that Hunter's not living in the Wagon Wheel, though it's pretty much the same exact set with some Lakeview furnishings thrown in. Still, that even more clearly illustrates the budgetary concern. They had to have Emily come looking for Hunter somewhere and did what they could on the cheap.
Sorry, Mala. But I don't find those to be good arguments.
Hunter is a brand new character on this show and today his little apartment was shown FOR THE THIRD EPISODE. Also in today's episode, Craig took Carly to a remote cabin. I've never seen that set before but it was a decent sized set. Last week, we saw the Wagon Wheel set for the first time in two years! If this show can put up all these big sets for the scenes we've seen the last couple episodes, they can put one up for Luke and Noah. The show has no excuse not to put up a temporary set for at least a few episodes. If TPTB never intended on showing us their Summer apartment, they should never have had them move in there in the first place. If Hunter gets a place, Luke and Noah should get one. Plain and simple.
And unlike Jean Passanante, I love the veteran characters on this show. But Bob, Kim, Susan and Barbara are featured so rarely that the their home sets aren't really needed now, are they?
No excuse whatsoever.
Seriously? Come on.Maybe we're still going to see the apartment. But to say Emily "needed" to go find Hunter at his? Give me a break. Luke "needed" to be shown sitting alone in their new, unfurnished place last week, his heart sinking as Noah wasn't showing up. But instead they showed him at Java, getting antsy. The impact of the scene was blunted considerably by that. And lord only knows what this Mason drama will bring, but if Luke and Noah are actually living together and we don't see their apartment, how will their schedules not matching up work? How on earth will that be dramatic if we don't see one of them waiting at home for the other? And if they aren't going to live together after all--if some throwaway line on Wednesday is going to reveal that after the Viking funeral they had the movers put everything back where it was because Noah isn't ready yet--that will be even more infuriating, because the show will have used the apartment as bait for four months without ever intending to follow through and actually give fans what we crave.Any way you slice it, the lack of an apartment is not just some budgetary issue. Either it exists and we've yet to see it or it doesn't and we've been had.
Mala,With all due respect, if Emily needed to find Hunter today, she could have gone to Java, the Lakeview, Al's, Old Towne or better yet the office (where Hunter supposedly still works) to find him. They did not need to build him a set for that!Luke and Noah, a popular couple who have been to hell and back in the last couple of years that they have been together, have finally decided to move into an apartment together. This is a momentous occasion in any young couple's lives. The priority for this show right now should be them, not some two month newcomer that nobody has had time to come to care about. The budgetary constraints of this show are not an excuse in this case. If they have the money to build two temporary sets for today's episode alone (Craig and Carly's cabin and Hunter's place), then surely they can put together a tiny, temporary set for Luke and Noah. Period.
Hey, Noah is getting a new boyfriend so that's something, huh?
And given that it's possible the show isn't bothering to give the boys their own place since Noah will be moving out in the next few months (if it takes that long) anyway to be with his new love Mason. They gotta save money where ever they can these days. Maybe they'll foot the bill for Nason's new place.
I'm just thinking like the TPTB might.
I'm sorry, but you seem to dismiss almost every observance Nuke fans have about Luke and Noah's glaringly unequal treatment with the same excuses and rationalizations we've been hearing from TPTB at the show since the beginning.Every reason you gave for us seeing Hunter's apt. applies to Luke and Noah as well. And then some. They've earned it. But Hunter, who has been on the show for 20 seconds and who I (and a lot of others) quite frankly don't care one whit about already has a set? And, unlike Noah, he's also been given a family. More often than not Luke and Noah are treated differently, and I don't think it's unreasonable to acknowledge it.
I was asked for my take on the apartment situation, and I gave it. That has nothing to do with making excuses or being dismissive. That's all there really is to it.
On a different note, the issue hitting stands this Friday has a focus on LGBT representation in daytime! There's gay characters on the cover, relevant interviews inside, etc. I hope you all pick it up or check out the digital edition!
Maybe not dismissive, but disingenuous all the same. Why did Emily NEED to find Hunter in his apartment, but somehow Luke and Noah don't NEED to have any scenes in any private dwelling of their own? TPTB threw up a bedroom at the farm just so Luke could wake up there after the icky Brian kiss; they tossed together a dorm room for Elwood. But Noah's actual dorm room? Nah, we'll just show the hallway on the day he moves out. These "needs" are driven by the choices the writers are making, and they're choosing not to show Luke and Noah in intimate settings, with one exception whose tameness proves the rule. I guess what's frustrating from a logical standpoint is that seeing that Hunter had an apartment should have changed your mind, but somehow it reinforced your already-held view instead. That doesn't make sense.

That doesn't make sense. I hope that I'm not sounding disrespectful and if I am then I'm sorry. That being said this was a temporary set that has only been seen I think twice. It was important to the storyline. It has nothing to do with Hunter sexuality or Nuke's. The fact is that its due to budget and it takes man power to take down and put up anything that isn't a permenant set and that costs money. I mean truthfully I'd want to see Bob/Kim's, Susan and Emily and Alison's place, Lucinda or Barbara's place before Nuke's. That doesn't mean that I don't want to see it but I don't think that them not showing it means that the show isn't being fair to that couple. Jack and Janet have talked and talked about building a house of their own but are they living in their own place? No, their still living at the farm, Barbara lives at the Lakeview and as do Henry/Vienna, Dusty and Damian do too. So Luke/Noah are far from the only one's who don't have their own place.
Noah is not getting a new boyfriend. I am a soap reporter, and the ATWT writers have confirmed that Mason will strictly be an advisory character who may cause tension, but will not be romantically involved with Luke or Noah.
Rhatch - Anthony was kidding about Mason being Noah's boyfriend. Though fans are welcome to have as much fun speculating as they want!
Oh really? Was I kidding?
Whether I was or I wasn't, I consider the 'soap reporters' (which was their very first post, oddly enough) claim about the upcoming story to be as speculative or perhaps wishful thinking as my own post. I haven't seen or heard any such statements made by the folks at ATWT.
I'm well aware of the Luke/Noah fans who don't want a triangle and are still hoping Mason turns out to be Noah's cousin/brother/uncle/some relation. My guess is that Rhatch is one of them.
But if this is true, then the ATWT writers are a foolish as I thought.
Quote:Bonobochick, I am so desperate for Jade to run into Adam. However, she's apparently vanished for a while. I would love to see her back on the canvas. On the bright side, while I share your fear about Adam falling for Alison, too, I don't think it's going that way...yet. LOL. Well since Bonnie has been let out recently to watch Dusty make a fool of himself over Meg - complete with a very terrible weave that I sincerely hope is rectified soon - Jade has been shoved back in minority closet. Shameful. With Adam back, you would think TPTB would actually tap into Jade & Adam's history - even if she doesn't know Adam = Riley - but noooooooo, we will have yet another guy back in town with strong, inexplicable craving for Alison's glittery milkshake. Who will go on and on and on about how wonderful Alison is (see: Matt) without the audience ever seeing it. On paper, a Casey/Alison/Riley triangle sounds good but as Alison generates no sparks with either man and is herself an insecure, wishy-washy person that is painful to listen to even when she isn't whining, I have zero interest in seeing her reign of Queen of the Junior Vortex of Suck continue. It makes no sense that TPTB keep making such an uninteresting, dull character a focal point in the younger adults storyline. I am tired of all these hot men with [potentially] interesting possibilities being wasted on Alison. I still want an explanation from TPTB why every single straight man under 30 falls for Alison and every single straight man over 30 falls for Meg. They are two of the worst female characters in soaps, let alone on ATWT.
AnthonyL, you are entitled to your opinion, and I don't think my Luke/Noah preference has anything to do with what I know. I am basing everything I say on fact. The fact of the matter is that when the writers released the info on Forbes March (Mason), they said that Luke/Noah fans had nothing to worry about, that there will not be a love triangle in the future. It was posted in an interview with Forbes March and Chris Goutman on soapcentral.com.

I have to agree with you. I have never understood the attraction to either one, except for Allison and Aaron. They bonded over his mother's illness, taking care of her in Seattle. Where is Aaron by the way, not a mention of where he disappeared to......
AnthonyL - Whoops. Didn't mean to speak for you! I was just going by the tenor of your posts in the past but also trying to make the point that possibilities exist out there and there's nothing wrong with throwing ideas around. Lord knows, Mason's place in Nuke's story was being debated long before he was set to make his debut this week. Bonobochick and indeegirl - I, personally, really liked the Chris/Alison/Aaron v.2.0 triangle, because it made sense and was rooted in all three characters' history. Plus, I thought Dylan, Marnie and Agim worked really well together. Perhaps the introduction of Janet's sister, Teri, will help balance out the 20-something set a little.
[Bonobochick and indeegirl - I, personally, really liked the Chris/Alison/Aaron v.2.0 triangle, because it made sense and was rooted in all three characters' history. Plus, I thought Dylan, Marnie and Agim worked really well together. Exactly! The problem with the 20 something set is that they are thrown into stories and we don't have any connection to them yet, so why would we care. I thought the way they integrated Billy Magnussen's Casey before throwing him into story was great. They seem to be doing well with Riley/Adam too. Showing the family connections first, then moving them into love stories makes it easier to root for a couple. What do you think?
Mala I really enjoyed your comments on yesterday's intervention scenes. While in some aspects I think the writing could have been stronger, the acting was fantastic. Kudos to all of the actors involved. Mick certainly has become quite the good actor and he didn't miss a beat. His scenes with Maura were heartbreaking. Totally agree though the standout was the Michael and Maura scenes. Everyone else just faded into the background as they talked. The show has wasted too much time already and when Maura returns, it's time for them to slowly find their way back together. They just work too well together to continue to keep them apart.I've also loved the Rosanna/Carly dynamic through this story. I wasn't crazy about her return until she got into this story and now I love it. I really hope Cady sticks around, I want much more of the sisters when Maura returns. I think Cady brings something different to the show that really enhances it.

That triangle was better IMO too because I thought Alison & Chris had lots of sparks even though I hated the writing for them with the sexual harassment suit & how Alison more or less screwed over Aaron without any of his family members caring (I always found it odd that after how she treated his brother, Luke never said one word to Alison or even hinted that what she did to Aaron sucked but I realized that would mean the show actually following through on something character driven rather that plot points). But yea, that was all rooted in history plus the actors worked well off one another. Casey/Alison has never worked for me as a romantic pairing and seeing TPTB continue to force something that isn't working doesn't endear the failed pairing any further. Adding Adam to the mix in also wanting Alison would just follow the pattern set the last few years that TPTB have in which every straight man under 30 inexplicably wants Alison & will constantly talk about how wonderful she is despite no evidence of it onscreen. *sigh*And I know the arrival of Teri will likely shake some things up in the 20s set but that opens up a whole new can of worms in which they already have a viable character for the 20s set in Jade who is also a person of color from a legacy family that they won't write for but they will introduce another white girl to the YA set and suddenly have all the men stop fighting over Alison to maybe sniff Teri out? What kind of message does that send to the audience?
I really liked the Intervention they had with Carly. I have heard speculation that yesterday's episode was Maura's last before her maternity leave. So it makes probable sense for her to go for an undisclosed amount of time to rehab.
There's no "speculation" to it, Rhatch. Yesterday was Maura's last day before maternity leave and the rehab write out was deliberately done for that purpose.WorldTurner - Thanks! Glad you liked my comments. I'm definitely enjoying Rosanna this go-round, too. Cady really brings so much history and emotional resonance to Carly's troubles and I can't wait to see Ro and Craig trying to handle life with Carly gone.Bonobochick - You're preaching to the choir here!
I was in the online chatroom for soaphunks.net's Annual Soaphunks Adonis Award Competition to cover the the contest as a work assignment, and both Van and Jake made the top eight, and neither were in the bottom three.
do not like Mason. i smell alterior motives.
