WorldTurner - The next time I talk to Michael Park, I will definitely pass on the praise. I agree, he was fantastic these past few weeks with the Parker story. The Hal scene on the porch was incredible.schiffeg68 - Thanks! I'm so glad you liked the Soapbox column. And I agree with you, I wish Paul could've been proven wrong about his jealousy. And I'm a huge proponent of the character going into therapy.RogerRocks - LOL! You certainly have a unique perspective! And you're giving me way too much credit. I don't have nearly the time and energy to be that stealthy. Most people who read these forums, my columns, and my blog entries know exactly what I enjoy on all my shows. I'd have no problem copping to being a Paul and Meg fan if that were actually the case.Bonobochick - We haven't gotten a whole lot of feedback on Alison/Casey. As for the minority characters on the show, I feel your pain. In my last column about the show, I wondered when/if we're ever going to see Bonnie and Derek's relationship progress. I do know that Jade will continue to be a player in the youth set, so hopefully that will keep the grown-ups involved in the canvas.MarkDutchViewer - Good question! I'll ask around.
I have to agree with Mark that I really enjoy watching InTurn online but good grief they can't write a decent story for the winners. I'm curious too if that will continue.Mala it's rumored that Chauntee has decided to stay with the show after all. I don't know if you can confirm that, but I like her so am glad if she is sticking around. I totally agree though that we need a real story for her and Derek. And is Dallas still around? They should all be mixed in more with the whole cast and not just in their own orbit that disappears for months on end.
I think it would be better to change InTurn a little. Let the inturns compete for one specific role (one year they can do the actors, the next year the actresses). This way the show can plan the character better and they can look for the one who's best for that role.

I just hope TPTB actually write for her more than being a punching bag or to make Alison look good. It would be nice to see Jade get her own storyline or a legitimate love interest. I would also like to see more of Derek and Bonnie. I would be interested on if you got any feedback on Alison/Casey because most forums I have been on, the feedback has been overwhelmingly negative toward the pairing and I was curious what the reaction was from folks to you/SOD on the pairing.Do you know anything about the actor playing Matt & his status on the show? I like the character.
As glad as I was to see Holden back on my screen and actually doing something signficant, not to mention Damian's return (LOVED the cliffhanger of Luke flirting with Noah only to see that it's Papa Grimaldi holding his hand), I was floored by Ewa DaCruz's fantastic performance today. She was sooooo good dealing with the loss of her baby! She's amazingly beautiful and incredibly talented. I just loved her. If only the story wasn't so dumb.On another note, at the end of the show, Noah was on the phone to someone. The show never explained who.... or I missed it. Anybody know who?
(Warning, this is gonna be mean)I think maybe he was lining up a band to play at the housewarming party he and Luke want to have. They're getting ABBA.
Someone on another board said maybe Noah is the one that Lucy is always calling.
Mala, aside from my other questions about the status of Matt and about the future of Jade along with Alison/Casey, do you know anything going on with the Bonnie situation? Now that the actress is staying on the show, will the show actually put her in a storyline? Same with the actor playing Derek? Thanks
Mala can you see if you can find out if CBS only gives ATWT a year and no more and can you also find P&G to try to sell their soaps? Thank
MalaWill you still cover a soap if it moves to a cable channel or even to the net why I ask is renew.
Ron, I will follow my soaps wherever they go! If GL or any other show were to move to a cable network or another medium like the Internet, I'm sure we would still continue to cover it.
I was just wondering - I thought Austin Peck was leaving the show. Did I read something wrong?
Quote from Mala SOW 4/21/2009 issue 'Forget therapy or meds, Paul needs to be sent away for a personality transplant'I think we've seen he's already gotten one of those personality transplants (over the course of the last 6 months), however, it's been a HUGE failure in my book. I like the brick idea though.
Mala I totally agreed with your comment that they went too far with Paul when he endangered his daughter. Although for me he went too far with what he did to Jen so he was already lost lol. Anyhow do you think the writers even have a clue about that and realize how much work they have to do now? A lot of us just aren't going to forget and overlook that. It's fine to give him an edge but there is a line that shouldn't be crossed.
This incarnation of Paul has always been a bit...volatile. But I just feel like he's really gone 'round the bend now. I'm glad you agreed with that assessment! Thanks!
You've got to be kidding Mala. This go-around of Paul is the best it's been in a long time. Until they ruin it and have him begging to be back with that woman who is the mother of his child. She's the one who's been making me sick with her selfishness and self righteous attitude. If I didn't love Eliza so much I wish Paul would just let Meg have her and get out of his life forever. She drives him and me crazy.
Mala, I just read the newest SOW. While I agree with your opinion on what the latest events will mean for Lily, Damian, and Holden and am looking forward to a triangle, I would also love to see what it means for Luke and Noah. Unfortunately reading the spoiler article, it seems the whole focus is on Damian, Lily, and Holden. It doesn't seem like Luke and Noah are a big part of what goes down. I was hoping we would get to see them deal with being tied up and kidnapped. It looks like Luke and Noah are the reason for the drama, but not involved in it. To me, that is disappointing. I was hoping to see Luke and Noah and it doesn't look like there will be much of them this week.
And this surprises you how?
I wouldn't say I'm surprised. I'm just disappointed. I heard a lot about Luke and Noah getting way, way more airtime. I guess I should learn to not believe it at all whenever I hear that. How many times have they promised that and not delivered? Why have their PR people go out of there way to say stuff that isn't true? I just don't get the double standard at CBS and Proctor and Gamble. Olivia and Natalia on GL have so much screentime and storyline all about them. But Luke and Noah fans have to fight for scraps and crumbs. Why is it so hard to for them to make Luke and Noah frontburner?
That's the difference. Society accepts two women more so than two men. So all I am going to say is enjoy the times we do get to see Luke and Noah. And cherish those moments.
It seems to me that Luke and Noah are going to be on a LOT during this storyline. I don't see how they're getting shafted in any way just because Damian, Lily, and Holden are involved, too. And the D/L/H triangle is a classic one on the show; it absolutely deserves to be front and center. Plus, just because I spoke to Noelle Beck about their side of the story doesn't mean it's not still about the boys.
As for Olivia, she's been a frontburner character on GL for years, and Natalia was front burner with Gus before he got killed off. I think it's more about the vet factor there combined with the Otalia popularity. If this was a story with Daisy and Rick's daughter, Leah, I think it would be on about the same or even less than Nuke.
I agree with you that the Damian, Lily, Holden triangle deserves to be front and center. I have liked Luke and Noah's involvement so far. What I don't like is being told that they will be heavily featured by the show, when Luke and Noah are just relegated to being in the background. Next week sounds like very little of Luke and Noah from everything I've read. I will be surprised if they are on more than one day. They have never been truly front and center and I think they deserve to be. They had the opportunity to capitalize on the popularity of Luke and Noah. The shows overall treatment of Luke and Noah I think has made them lose fans and ratings when there were some gains. As for GL, they treat Otalia better than ATWT treats Nuke. Otalia doesn't just get random, token appearances. ATWT only says Luke and Noah will have lots of airtime, but it never happens. I know that CC and JL are both older actors and Otalia are popular together, but Van has been with ATWT a long time and Nuke are popular as well. I don't buy it's just because they are younger because Will and Gwen were on nearly everyday. However I do think there is something to the idea that is because it's two men and CBS is just perpetuating the idea that people are more comfortable with women. I don't think it's true. Queer as Folk(was about gay men) and was very popular among heterosexual women.
But QAF was a entirely different show that went to a specific crowd. I believe the majority of the het women were in their 20's possible in their early 30's. I seriously many st8 women above that watched QAF. Daytime soaps are still in the older crowd. Yes Daytime is trying to get the younger generation, hence the younger performers but with school and work makes it difficult to get them unless they are like me and most other AND THEY TIVO it every day. Mandee, I am right there with ya. I would love to see more NUKE and less PIBERTY. Just my opinion
I think Nuke is on at least two episodes next week. On Monday Zoe will reveal her true intentions and it seems like they involve Luke (Van said that Zoe has a strange interest in Luke) so I think they're both on Monday. The PGP blog posted a picture of Luke and Noah from Thursday's episode. So Monday and Thursday and who knows... maybe even more. Why not wait to see how much they're on first and if you're still not happy, you can complain afterwards by writing/calling the show.
Watching Alison in the preview for the week of 4/20 confiding in Casey AGAIN about her sex issues AGAIN and his reassuring her AGAIN that he wants her but will wait for her to be comfortable, all I could think of is STILL THIS ? First Chris, then Aaron, then Matt and now Casey. Mala, please tell me TPTB have seen the light that Casey & Alison is not working? Am I hoping in vain that re-introducing Jade into the mix means that there is a chance TPTB are going to have Casey end up with Jade and not Alison? I mean, at least Jade & Casey have some sizzle to their scenes. Alison & Casey is a snoozefest, not just because in my opinion the actors have no romantic chemistry, but the storyline for them is absolutely dreadful & totally repetititve. I mean, do Casey & Alison have a big fan base and I am somehow just missing their magic?
You know I can't spoil, Bonobochick, but I'd say to sit tight with Casey/Alison/Jade. The dynamic will get a fun shift in coming weeks. (I'm not saying HOW, because I love my job. LOL.)As to your question about their fanbase, we don't get much AliCase mail at all.
Quote:Why not wait to see how much they're on first and if you're still not happy, you can complain afterwards by writing/calling the show. Good point because now that the day by day spoilers are out, the story is on 4 days. Luke is named on 3 of those days and Noah on 2 although he could still be shown even if not mentioned.

LOL.)As to your question about their fanbase, we don't get much AliCase mail at all. Thanks Mala. I'd heard TPTB were trying to hard sell Alison/Casey at the luncheon yesterday too, which is disappointing since I was hoping that they would realize the pairing is just not working & is wasting the talent of both actors. I hope that I am not disappointed by TPTB again but I won't hold my breath. I am cautiously optimistic regarding this "fun shift" you hinted. Also, do you have any idea when Bonnie and/or Derek will be back onscreen or if there is a storyline coming up for either character? I mean, what's the point of CBS talking about diversifying shows by hiring more folks of color yet backburnering nearly all the minority actors? Or bringing them on as day player thugs? (hey stereotype!)
You know what would be great. have Bonnie representing someone really big and realize the case is too big for her to handle. In walks Jessica to help out. I would love to see Jessica come to back to Oakdale, and when I say Jessica, I mean the original Jessica not a recast.Maybe even Duncan coming in to save the day.
It would be great to see the original Jessica and Duncan back on ATWT (not with the current PTB in charge). Yet, I have hope that Tamara Tunie doesn't think that by leaving her primetime gig on L&O:SVU to come back to ATWT would be a "good thing".Quote:You know what would be great. have Bonnie representing someone really big and realize the case is too big for her to handle. maybe for a short time when L&O goes on hiatus or something. Tamara could make a short stop and Oakdale. And Duncan can too.
Mala, what will it take for TPTB to pay attention to fans' concerns about the state of the show? Between the breakneck speed of storytelling and revolving door of newbies while the Vets are locked out, people are tired and turning out in droves. I've seen on various websites remaining viewers voicing concern, anger and suggestions yet TPTB are doing more of what is turning off fans. Now Goutman & Passanante are subject of excoriating fanvids that are more popular than the show because the vids pointedly lampoon the very things that are driving fans away (see on youtube "As The World Stops Turning"). With GL now canceled and ATWT on the ledge, I would think it would be a wake-up call but it seems to be more of the same. Again, what will it take for TPTB to listen to what fans are saying and make changes for the better instead of doing more of the same that is causing the show to bleed viewers?
Wouldn't that be awesome. I would love to see Jessica to come back and help. I would love to see Dusty or Paul or one of the other BIG actors have an issue and hire Bonnie and she seems to be losing and then in walks the Big Guns. Oh how lovely that would be. Paul/Meg forever
I just read your blog, Mala, and I couldn't agree with you more! I loved almost every second of the storyline Zac/Zoe/Luke/Noah/Damian/Holden/Lily. Yes the plot was a little lame, but I thought there were many standout scenes. I was disappointed by Zac not being gay. There has to be some hot guy that can try to come between Luke and Noah. I also was a little let down by the Luke/Noah hospital scenes at the end. Their scenes during the hostage situation were so intense. There could have been more focus on their relationship. Then again, if Noah didn't talk to Luke about Damian, there wouldn't have been that fantastic Luke/Damian scene where Luke asks him to stay. Amazing!
Thanks, mandeemarshe. And maybe Zac's bisexual. Who knows!
I do believe Zack would be bisexual. He did kiss Noah twice I believe and he was coming on to him all the time. And I don't think that was an act. I can completely understand Damian's feelings now. In the beginning he was hurt of Luke's orientation and now he is able to accept it. There are some fathers who never accepts and others who accepts it from the beginning. I am glad that Damian is sticking around. Holden just have to get used to the idea that Lily's ex in town. Lord knows, he tells Lily to get over it when his exes are around, Molly, Carly to name two.
After reading your blog about the Luke/Noah/Zac/Zoe story, Mala, some things I agree with and some not.True, I hope NONE of the younger characters become middle aged couples like Will and Gwen. And I agree the story wrapped up too fast. It was ridiculous how much the writers crammed into yesterday's episode alone. It sort of took away from the payoff between the boys with Noah in the hospital bed and them discussing Damian yet again when I would rather have seen a whole scene with them expressing how much they love each other. I can't say I really cared for your backhanded compliment of Noah when you said this is the most fun he's been in quite a while. And while I always enjoy his reactions to psycho nut jobs (like Cleo), it was very hit or miss with Zac. Reactions to Zac's weirdness was fine. But reactions to his flirting weren't fun, especially since Zac was pretending to be gay in order to make Noah uncomfortable. I'm not exactly sad that the Z twins time in Oakdale is finished. Other than the continuity flaws here and there, this was a decent story. And I'm glad TPTB finally featured Luke and Noah enough to make it a good story. It was nice not having to wait several episodes between appearences for once.
Bonobochick - All I can tell you is that viewers need to keep writing in to the shows and making their concerns known. The state of soaps is worrying us all these days!
Andy - All the action seemed packed in to a 42 minute episode: Rescue, arrest, hospital, "Please stay, Damian." And there could've been so much more tension over the course of a few episodes. At least Noah was kidnapped for almost a week and a half's worth of episodes and Luke for several instead of just for one day.
Additionally, there's nothing "backhanded" about my Noah comment. The show doesn't ordinarily let Noah be fun. He's all too often the long-suffering straight man (and I don't mean in a sexual sense) to the more volatile Luke, and this gave him something new and different to react to. I appreciated both Noah and Luke being involved in a crazy soap story that any couple on daytime could find themselves in, with insane kidnappers playing head games.
i love that we saw Noah Pov in this story line.. he seem more equle to Luke. he had some good liners too.
I hope Noah does not just fade in to the background like has in the past and it's all Luke.To bad they can not move in to the place did they not get it

It was nice not having to wait several episodes between appearences for once. I can kind of agree with what was said about Noah. It is the most entertaining he's been. It's also the most screentime he's gotten in a long time. It proves that Noah is an entertaining character when he actually has significant screentime. For a long time, Noah has been just standing around in the background, wiping down the counters at Java, ect. That proves Noah should keep getting more airtime as well as Luke. Sadly, it looks like they won't be on all that much in the coming weeksI would like for them to address the issue of Luke and Noah living together. This subject has been handled very strangely and inconsistently. I think Luke and Noah should just focus on being a young couple until the next crisis. I just read some article that made a great point. Even though I really enjoyed this storyline, it seems that all of Luke and Noah's problems are external rather than internal. Also we never get to see their inner lives, causing people to ask "who are these people". Though that is a problem for the whole show.
Quote:Bonobochick - All I can tell you is that viewers need to keep writing in to the shows and making their concerns known. The state of soaps is worrying us all these days! Will do, Mala. This show is inching closer to cancellation because of the current production model. It's like TPTB are intent on doing everything possible to muck up the show being picked up in 2010.Regarding the May 1st episode, the show might as well have run over my mother's beloved dog and it would have been less horrific than that episode. Just awful and so much of what's wrong with the show as a whole. The only thing that would have been worse is if Paul/Meg had been on today. I want to weep for the poor actors who deserve so much better as well as the rapidly dwindling remaining audience. I stick around for the characters I still enjoy but with so many I don't like taking up so much screentime, it makes it tough. Craig, Carly, Henry, Jade, Emily, Casey (when not anywhere near Alison or talking about her), Noah, Luke and Damian are the characters I watch for. And Pepper! Mala, question... what's up with all these 10 episode contracts TPTB keep giving out? Why aren't they writing more for exisiting characters instead of doling out these 10 ep deals to newbies that most people don't bother to get invested in or are completely wasted when there is much potential like Eric William Morris? I've seen that mentioned on a few boards about these 10 ep deals that keep going out. Thought I would bounce it to you.
Fans voicing their concerns to TPTB over what ATWT is doing wrong sounds like a good idea. But sometimes it feels like a losing battle because they refuse to listen. And Chris Goutman even stated in a interview last year that he does not care what the fans think. If he was only joking when he said that, I'm not laughing. I'd like to know who will actually LISTEN to our concerns so we know who to vent to.
Mala, I just read your blog on diversity. I agree that it's ridiculous how ATWT treats their characters of color (don't watch the other shows). I understand why you made the comparison to the Nuke kissing ban.. I just hope it was not meant to put the blame on Nuke fans or something. When I write to TPTB about Nuke I also talk about other stories/characters. I always mention how I'd like to see more Bonnie/Derek and that I think Jade and Casey are more fun than Casey and Alison.
Oh, and Bonnie and Derek did share a kiss. I think it was in the hospital after Robbie had taken him hostage at Metro.
Oh, I certainly don't think it's Nuke fans' fault that the black characters aren't shown, Mark. I referenced the kissing ban because what I am concerned by is the lack of mobilization. There are no huge campaigns for characters of color to have front burner stories, show affection, etc. I think people are just too tired after years and years of the same patterns. And it figures Bonnie and Derek kissed and I missed it... but is anyone counting the days since that happened? Till it happens again? I doubt it.
There's a a very strong voice for LGBT storylines in daytime right now. Viewers are motivated and excited. That's awesome. But it seems people think that means racial diversity's problem is somehow "solved," and it's not.
I've been talking about the issues of sexual and racial diversity in daytime since the inception of my blog and my magazine column, and in our Critical Mass section as well, and the fact is, both are an ongoing struggle.
Okay, glad you cleared that up. It was almost like you said Nuke fans should do something, because they were the ones doing something during the kissing ban. I think the lack of mobilization might come from the fact that Bonnie/Derek probably don't have a huge fanbase. But that's just my guess. I like them, but I'm not a fan. I don't rewatch their scenes on YouTube (if they're even uploaded). Like I said, when I write to the show I usually mention I want to see more of them, but because I'm not a fan of them I don't start an international media blitz. That doesn't mean I'm okay with the way they're handling these characters, it's just... complicated and I can't really explain...
LOL. No, Nuke fans have done enough! But I wish there was a fan base that organized and committed for other minority pairings, you know?
I understand. It's really weird how they handled the Jade/Derek story. They reveal that he's her father and then they just drop the story. I hope we'll see more of Derek/Bonnie soon. I know Bonnie is supposed to be part of the Paul/Meg/Dusty/Rosanna story, but I have no idea how big her role in the story is and if Derek will be part of it too.
I guess we just have to sit tight, Mark!Bonobochick - I'm not sure what you mean about ten episode deals going out. I know Melinda Sullivan and Nick Galbraith were only signed on for ten episodes...?
Maddie was brought back for (I think) less than 10 episodes. And so was Lucy at first. Kevin, Matt... all of them had short stints on the show.
Also, Evan Alex Cole (Hunter) published his airdates on his website. There are only 6 airdates left. The last airdate mentioned is June 16. Maybe that's just what he has filmed so far.
It just seems like the show brings on these characters to tell short stories and then they leave again. I heard Winston Mayer is supposed to be only back for a few days and that the story is more about Noah's past.
