This makes it seem like it's a foregone conclusion now.

Guiding Light to be extinguished, report says
The end is coming for daytime soaps.
TV Week is reporting that CBS is developing new programs to replace The Guiding Light, the longest running soap in the history of broadcasting, dating back 70 years if you count radio. It debuted on CBS-TV in 1952.
CBS's contract with Procter & Gamble, which underwrites the show, ends in September. The audience for The Guiding Light has slipped to just over two million, an unacceptable number. Its demographics also are brutal, about as old as the show.

I don't watch your show but maybe another network will pick it up. I can't believe a show with that much history will be gone. No way. Maybe NBC will pick it up, they are down a soap. Will keep my fingers crossed.
You know today is April Fool's day, could this be a joke?
sheesh.... Ya spend a fortune to BRING PHILLIP BACK and look what ya get............a cold slap in the face......
If this is not a joke then I am done with the soaps. They took away SB,AW and now GL. UGH
I'm with you mkv0463---I don't watch GL, but this is a sad day to see a 72 year old soap cancelled. I feel for the fans of GL.
How about it? This show was finally picking up again. I love that they bought Grant back as Phillip What an absoulte waste
I couldn't agree more! The show was finally FINALLY getting good again!I've watched this show for as long as I can remember! I actually remember Kevin Bacon and the gang that hung out at Laurel Falls. I am so so sad that it's leaving! I hope hope hope that it moves to another channel. It's got too much history to just go away! It's a sad sad sad day.
I agree with all of you! I love Guiding Light! and it is the best soap on tv right now! All soaps have ups and downs but Guiding Light is on an up! I have loved Guiding Light since I was little and started taping (and later DVRing) the show when I was in college...and am still doing so at 30 years old! So, I can't imagine my days without the escape of Springfield's drama to come home to! I was devastated by the news that CBS is planning to turn off my light! I just can't believe that anyone could let this happen! I pray CBS changes their mind!! Through the years friends have recommended other soaps to me and I have tried to watch and get into them...but none ever lived up to Guiding Light and nothing was ever good enough for me to bother with for more than a year. However, conversely when I have recommended Guiding Light to friends, the show has become a lasting staple in their lives. Guiding Light has always tested limits, hired the best new talent and taken constructive feedback from it's fans into consideration...which are factors that have contributed to the quality entertainment we enjoy. I think that if CBS did a better job of promoting the show, once people tuned in they would be as hooked as I am! I also think soap opera digest should do a better job of covering GL and letting people know about it's strengths! I am so disappointed in CBS and will find it very hard to watch the network after this betrayal. I hope P&G is able to find a new home for my show and hope you will join me in writing to whomever we must to save Guiding Light!!!!
Well, I don't know what can be done but there has to be something. Like I said I have never watched the show but have had other soaps end like Ryan's Hope and Santa Barbara but neither had the history that this show has. Don't give up is all I can say. Maybe another network will pick it up. I don't think ABC will because they do have three soaps already but maybe NBC. It is a shame I also think the fact that in NY the Light was on in the morning, bad time for them. It is such a shame.
I just submitted the following as a complaint to CBS. I figure at the very least they'll see how upset we all are about the ending of a beloved show...Dear CBS,I am absolutely floored and dismayed by your decision to cancel The Guiding Ligt. I have been a faithful watcher of this show since early in my life roughly 35 years of constant watching. Your decision is while I'm sure in your estimation the right decision based on economic times etc but is the worst decision for the viewers. We are the ones who through our watching and our viewing of your ad time keep your network alive. There are few shows that I along with my family watch on your network anymore and you've just eliminated one. I can happily take my further viewing to Soapnet and refrain from watching any more shows and there for limiting the ad viewership you so desparately need. I'm sure your view is that loosing the few viewers that will leave based on this business decision is worth the savings in cost of producing etc the show. However I would argue that your business model and theory for this decision are skewed. Soap viewers are some of the most loyal and faithful viewers a network can hope to have. We view specific channels for decades and bring our families along with us. By alienating us, you have hurt your bottom-line in ways that you can not yet fathom. I can only hope that P&G will take The Guiding Light to another network and if they do, millions of viewers will follow. We will not forget who ultimately should be blamed for this and will cease to watch CBS. It is not too late to alter your future and keep the millions of faithful viewers with you otherwise, it's SoapNet for me and my family. Sincerely a former CBS viewer,
Don't hide under the covers, folks. There are plenty of ways to show your support for the show and possibly see it air on another network. Say goodbye to GL on CBS - that's def over but GL is owned by P&G and they are looking around for a buyer. Create some buzz! Post here, post everywhere, write letters. Show them that this is a popular, well-loved show that got pushed aside by a antiquated rating system. Rumour has it that Soapnet and Lifetime are interested - let 'em know that you are too!!
I read on soapnet.com that they are trying to work out a deal for the Guiding Light & possibly As the World Turns to be on Lifetime. They said that if it went through the Guiding Light would switch in September & As the World Turns when CBS decides it's done.
Oh that would be great! Let's cross our fingers!

HOLY FRIGGEN CRAP BAT MAN........I HAVE WATCHED THIS SHOW SINCE LIKE DAYS AFTER MY BIRTH ( 40 years actually)... DAYUM... THIS IS HEARTBREAKING
