Giving Back With Katherine Kelly Lang

KATHERINE KELLY LANG 5

Just Cause: Breakaway from Cancer, www.breakawayfromcancer.com

How did you get involved? “It was good timing. Dom [Zoida, her real-life beau] had a connection there. We met and we hit it off right away. It’s been about three years now.”

Describe what Breakaway does. “There are four different organizations within the umbrella. Support: The cancer community is all about the support they can give you when you’re battling cancer. Prevention: Getting screened and staying on top of your health to prevent this from happening in the first place or catching it early on. Financial aid: The patient advocacy foundation helps with financing, getting the insurance covered and finding the right doctor for you, things along those lines. Survivorship: They walk you through the entire process of care, treatment and beyond.”

How do you contribute? “I help get the word out. I do a lot of PSAs, campaigns, commercials, interviews and press. I’ll be attending and promoting the Amgen Tour of California, which is a professional bike race. Within that, we also do the BFC Mile Walk with the cancer survivors. We’ve done it before and it’s very inspiring.”

And you help with fundraising? “Yes! We are doing two bus tours with B&B fans on August 18. We’re touring places in L.A. where we shot on location for B&B. All the money goes to Breakaway. We also include it in my kaftan line
[katherinekellylangkaftans.com]. We have special BFC kaftans and we have bracelets that we made where 100 percent of those proceeds go to Breakaway.”

You’ve been very open about losing your father to cancer. What would your dad think about this? “I think he’d be proud. It was so sad losing him at 13. You’re not a kid but you’re not an adult, and fathers and daughters have such a special relationship. Back then, there was a stigma attached to cancer. It was like a dirty little secret that no one wanted to talk about, and that bothered me. Something needed to be done in terms of raising awareness and getting people talking, so I’ve always had that in the back of my mind. That’s why it feels so good to be doing this now.”
