Gays in Daytime: One and Counting…

I'm glad ALL MY CHILDREN has recast Bianca; she's a legacy character on the show and a historic character in daytime. But here's what makes me sad: once AS THE WORLD TURNS departs the airwaves in September (taking Luke, Noah and Reid with it), Bianca will be the only major, regularly recurring gay character on the daytime soaps. For a genre that always prided itself on being in the forefront of many important historical storyline (and casting) innovations, it's hard to know what to make of this development. ONE LIFE TO LIVE ditched its popular Oliver (a.k.a. Fish) and Kyle — known forever by the soap couple moniker Kish — romance recently, due to the oft-dictated "storyline" excuse. But sources whispered that there were other reasons, e.g., the gay marriage subplot. At the time, in mid-March, Brett Claywell (Kyle), interviewed on Zap2It.com, noted, "I can't speak to what's in the mindsets of people in the Midwest or in the South, people who grew up where I grew up [who] aren't exposed in any way to different truths. If, because of their opinions, we were let go ... then I feel a lot more sorrow for them than I do for myself." What does this say about our country and our apparent moral quagmire: the fact that, in the land of the free and the home of the brave, in the 21st century, we still "just can't get along"? I'll leave you to your own conclusions, except for this: I truly hope that Bianca gets some daytime gay brothers and sisters, stat.
