I've read all the complaints about AMC and I know all of my issues with this show. It seems the one thing Mr. Pratt did correct was balance of story, however that has gone by the wayside and now, AMC, imo is one gigantic mess.
I've read all the discussion about whether the soap genre is dying, about the budget crunches and salary cuts, and the poor ratings.
So, how do we fix AMC? Of course I have some thoughts, but I'll keep those to myself. I do believe AMC is a viable soap. I believe the cast is a talented one (though there are a few I could do without) and I believe there are plenty of stories left to tell for the residents of Pine Valley.
Where does one begin??
Soaps have certain staples - couples, friendships, family, it is time AMC gets back to that. Right now, AMC has Zach and Kendall, the most powerful couple on this show. Instead of continually finding ways to torture them (and their fans), why not write a story that allows them to be side by side? Go on an adventure? Instead of trying to rip apart couples, write for them. Stop messing with what works.
Jake and Amanda- not quite a couple - but a duo I like. I like that they are building a friendship, that Amanda is learning she can be friends with a man and doesn't need to sleep with him. I don't know where this will go, but so far, I like it. Though I'm tired of David and his threats.
Family
When was the last time this show focused on family time? Honestly? I can remember a time where all drama on soaps was suspended on holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, birthday's, etc. and family was the focus. When was the last time we saw families come together for Christmas? Thanksgiving? Soaps need some happy, right now, AMC is dark and depressing.
Friendships
Where are they? We see Brot and Frankie and Frankie and Taylor. I'm not really invested in their stories because I find them boring, but they are friends and it is a nice thing to see. But where are the rest? Why not have Brot and Kendall become friends? Brot understands how Kendall feels - being in a coma himself. He could provide open and honest insight to her. When was the last time we saw Fish n Chips and Tad together? I actually enjoyed their friendship a great deal, yet, now it's like they are strangers. Why can't Zach have an honest friend who only feels friendship for him? Maybe Zach and Jesse could be friends - as they have things in common - mainly living in the shadows for a good part of their life. Why don't we see more of Erica and Opal together? What happened to people just being good friends? Talking and helping each other just because?
History
It needs to be remembered and respected. Viewers are not stupid. I'm tired of having my intelligence insulted. All writers need to pay attention to details when telling a new story - because the viewers have memories and know how things rolled out.
Show - Don't Tell
This is a concept I learned at a very young age. Stop telling me that this character is cool or that couple will be hot, or that this person is a hero....show me. I need to make that decision for myself. I need to know if I think this person is cool, or that couple has potential or I detest this character because.....he / she did this. Show me why I should like them or dislike them, let me make my own mind up.
Balance
This show needs it. Big time. I'm sick and tired of David and Krystal having the same conversation over and over again, that lasts forever, and yet other characters are short-changed.
Original Stories
I get that soaps recycle stuff - but why recycle things that didn't work the first time around? It's time for something original, something new and fresh.
Consistency
Can one writer read the other writer's work? Please? Watching AMC day to day gives me whiplash.
Trust
The writers and producers of this show have lost the viewers trust. It's going to take a lot to get it back. I sincerely hope some plans are in place to start fixing the things that are broken, so this show can start climbing its way back to the top.
All the elements are right there, I just wonder what it's going to take to make things happen.
Your thoughts?
I loved your post and whole heartily agree with everything you said. Now if only TPTB would take this into consideration.
I have honestly have to say at this point I don't trust anything the headwriter or TPTB have to say. I don't like my intelligence being insulted and being told that what I see is just in my imagination and that I am writing what I want to see in my mind. Don't blame bad writing that you can't watch without getting whiplash on the fans it's all on you. Your the writer and the poeple that put it on the air own it and fix it if it isn't working. If you want respect and trust you have to earn it. I want this show to get back to what soaps have been in the past. I want to see more romance and adventure. I want to see families and caring friends together being there for each other in tough times. I also want to be able to be excited and enjoy watching the show when I come home from work and that I will be able to sit and watch the show without wanting to fast foward or just turn off and not even watch the show.
Write Stuff: I agree wholeheartedly with your post. Today's soap writers seem to have gotten away from what make viewers happy -- love, romance, families, history. Now it's all about stunts, gimmicks, shock and awe, and bed hopping. There's no respect for relationships and character history is thrown out the window.AMC needs a HW that will write character driven stories...not just for plot. Also, they need to not write the women as weak...needing a man, or sleeping with a man because they can't stand on their own two feet.I agree AMC has a very talented cast...but many are not being used to their potential. Beth Ehlers is a good example. It's like their utilizing their favorites and the balance of the cast is backburnered or ignored.I always feel that the top dog is to blame when everything breaks down....so IMO Brian Frons should be replaced at AMC because all three of ABC's soaps are struggling and if he's greenlighting all the storylines, they are failing miserably.
Great posts all...IMHO, for AMC to improve changes need to be made starting at the top, and that change is removing Brian Frons...There was an interview with Erika Slezak (sp) where she stated that Frons approves all stories.....he has the final word....so everything we see, Frons has the final say....He has to go..Then, they need to fine a HW who can fix the mess that McT, B&E, and Pratt has made.....A HW who respects the history of the show and it's characters.... Doesn't use shock & senstionalism or plost devices to tell a story...and actually takes time to tell the story...Then, they need to clean house.... Get rid of the characters whose time have come and gone.... Ryan is the first character that needs to go..... Stop bringing on new characters or recasts and work with what they have..Jesse/Angie are very popular, but they have no story.... Yet, Ryan...a character that is hated and continues to be hated is front & center, 24/7, shoved down our throats with bad results..I want AMC back... IMHO, AMC has the potential to be the #1 soap... They have the talent with the actors/actresses, but the HW, EP and head of ABC daytime are the ones holding it back...
The writers and TPTB apparently want them separated so that Ryan can have a storyline with Zendall. It's been like this for almost 5 years and it's not going away. The only way it's going away if Cameron leaves or the viewers stop watching and after the upcoming grief sex between Kendall and Ryan and don't blame the fans if they ever tuned back into AMC. It's horrible that we keep having torture after torture with Zach/Kendall and no meaningful conversations between the two of them, just more angst added. I love Zach/Thorsten, Kendall/Alicia, and Zendall but enough is enough. If the writers and TPTB want them separated for good than do it so that many, many Zendall fans out there can just STOP watching and move on to a better well character wrtten SOAP like Y&R.Quote:Soaps have certain staples - couples, friendships, family, it is time AMC gets back to that. Pat, ITA.....The only s/l they have for Ryass always involve Zach/Kendall...Ryannie vs Ritchie was the very first time in a long time that Ryass had a story on his own and that bombed...everyone was rooting for Ritchie to kill Ryass and get rid of him.None of his pairings have worked since Gillian.... RenDULL 1.0 was okay... Even I was a fan, but when Ryass came back to town, he became a woman abusing jerk and treated Kendall like dirt..Since then, nothing has worked for him..Ryass with Kendall is like a really bad domestic violence s/l that TPTB are trying to sell as romance and it's disgusting...Rylee was and is hated...Ailee became popular, but they destoryed it to go with Rylee..Zendall is popular and they are being destoryed for this Ryass ish..When a character is hated the way Ryass is and not just on the boards, but off the boards also..... when nothing works in any s/l, when they must trash the great characters/couples, just to keep him front and center, it's time to cut your losses and let him go...Kendall is being dumbed down so that Ryass looks good...Hell, all the women on AMC are being dumbed down...Krystal is a character I can't stand, but even she is dumbed down for David...Amanda looks like a skank with no brain who needs Jake to save her..Angie is now the town screamer...nothing more..I just don't get why they keep doing this...I would love to see Kendall realize that Ryass is using her... come to the realisation that Ryass has and is abusing her, then kick him to the curb....ot have her team up with Annie and kill him...
I've watched the Monday, March 16 show, and I have to say, very little makes sense, and this is the problem with AMC in a nutshell. Zach and Kendall have been separated for ONE day, and both are acting like he left her permanently (which isn't how it played out, but ok) weeks ago. Before he left, Kendall told him she loved him and has always loved him through everything they've been through, and yet, Zach wondered why Kendall didn't tell him she loved him when he left the house and moved into the casino. Ryan's lying to Kendall, and she believes him, while little Emma can tell that Ryan is out to get the bad man who caused Greenlee to die. I find myself shaking my head at Kendall more and more, and I hate feeling that way.Zach tells Kendall he wanted to sleep with Reese, which isn't what I saw on my television set except when he kissed her at the chapel, and even then, he stopped himself. Since Reese was injured, I've seen Zach feel guilty and want to be a friend and that's all.We have Kendall telling Zach that she's sorry for everything, and I'm not hearing Zach reciprocate. (I'm not trying to get into a battle over who's right or wrong in their marriage, but there needs to be mutual apologies to acknowledge that two people have made errors, big errors, in their marriage.)Reese keeps talking to people who walk into her room without asking who it is, and she's furious with Zach one minute and needing his friendship the next. Yet another character written without any consistency.I used to think the problem with Pratt was a lack of understanding who the characters are, but it's more than that. It's more than plot device after plot device. It's now inconsistency from scene to scene, with Kendall and Zach saying things that don't make sense just to further whatever story objective he's trying to tell. My question is, what's the point in trying to tell a story if all credibility is lost along the way? The truly sad part is, I used to get very upset over bad writing like this, but I'm so used to it now with this HW, I'm taking note of it and feeling sorry for the actors involved, but feeling very little by way of emotion for Zach and Kendall. Because tomorrow or the next day, they'll contradict each other yet again, and it'll just keep on going. This is no way to tell a story.
I feel like Alice in Wonderland watching this show. I fell into a rabbit hole and am witnessing all kinds of bizarre events with no connection to anyhthing. Nothing makes sense. But unlike Alice who woke up from her night mare before being beheaded, all of us AMC fans and the actors are going to be beheaded by this HW. There is no awakeing from this!He has to go now!
I hate hate hate that they have torn Zach and Kendall apart. Shes taken years of abuse from Ryan, then they saddled her with his kid. then she FINALLY found someone to share her life with in Zach only to bring that to a screeching halt with Ryan AGAIN ..... I am sick to death of Ryan, they have worn this character out so bad, in my mind there is no redeeming him. I don't know why they write every woman on this show to fall all over over him. Hes a creep. his holier than thou attitude is sickening. I can't believe anyone to be so insensitive as to hop into bed with Kendall while she is having Zach problems, recovering from a heart transplant just buried her brother is on the outs with her sister....and they hadn't yet discovered Greens body. WHO was also portrayed as an idiot! Running back to him when he was married to the current "love of his life" Sleeping with the jackass that left her becuz she was pregnant, he was mentally abusive to her and actually raised his fist to her - and first chance she got she ran back to him OH PLEEEZE. We were supposed to buy into he had a whole personality change when he accepted that he wasn't his father and wouldn't abuse his children. So this lets him be father of the year???? Everyone wants his baby now?? I have a pretty good imagination, but I can't see myself in any circumstance, let alone strong beautiful women like Kendall and Greenlee that have money - their own company - and lets face it, could get any man they set their sights on, running back to a self centered tantrum throwing spineless creature like RYAN.Put him on the back burner for awhile and let me watch AMC Ryan free for a week, b4 I fast-forward thru the ENTIRE show, or get closer to reving it for the list of recorded shows!
Much as I dislike the character of Ryan, and I do (alot), I have to wonder if AMC is just using him to avoid dealing with Kendall's lack of trust in Zach (which caused her not to tell him about the ONS) and Zach's decision to father Gabrielle (which has never been resolved in a satisfactory way for the audience). Suddenly Ryan's the problem in the Slaters' marriage. Ok, he's been one of their problems, but not the only one, and because AMC has piled so much crap on Zach and Kendall, over the course of years and three different HWs, Pratt has decided to gloss over the past and deal with a brand new one. I confess, I'm still watching AMC, but I don't understand what I'm watching, and I'm a pretty savvy viewer (with a job and disposable income, too!), and I don't understand why Zach is giving up, and Kendall is giving in to Ryan. Who are these characters? What's the story AMC is trying to tell, and why don't they respect me enough to use the history I've actually seen to tell the story? Why am I being encouraged to believe that Always Only You was tainted from the start? It wasn't, and I don't care how many times Pratt tries to tell me Kendall loves Ryan, she doesn't. Not the way she loves Zach. AMC should be courting me like I'm Miss America. I'm a loyal viewer with money in my pocket, and instead they treat me like I'm a Bic pen, disposable and irrelevant. They're making a HUGE mistake.
Gator, TPTB don't give a flying flip about the viewers or the actors..The only way to fix this show is to fire everyone at the top....starting with Frons, Pratt, Carruthers, then hire a decent HW, EP and someone to head ABC daytime that isn't a sexist, arrogant pig...I doubt AMC will make it to 2010.....not with Pratt writting, Carruthers as EP, and Frons at the helm....I really, really don't..
Did anyone see today's show? I saw clips and Ryawn treating Kendall like a $2 hooker when he kicked her out. And these writers have Ryawn trying to be noble by saying that it was wrong for them to sleep together. This guy is beyond redeeming. I can't watch AMC live because it gets worse by the day with this show. The writers have the nerve to try and blame everything that Kendall is doing on her. It takes two for a marriage to breakdown. I guess it's Kendall's turn to be chased up a tree. I love me some Zach/Kendall, but I will not tune into AMC with the way not only Zach/Kendall is written, but the overall show. It's disgusting, sad and sickening. I don't see AMC on pass this year.
Pat, I haven't watched the show in a while, but I do get feed back about what happened and from what I hear, it was disgusting...Also, my SIL said they showed Kendall thinking about Zach telling her that he loved in from NY '05, then Ryass telling her that he loved her from 4 years ago..Funny thing is, NY '05 was a beautiful, romantic moment for Zen... Zach was completely and totally in love & devoted to kendall and she loved him completely, but was afraid..Compare that to the Ryass flashback and it's a joke, because in the Ryass flashback... Although, that loser was telling KEndall he loved her, he was doing everything, except having sex with GL...My SIL also said that they had Ryass treat Kendall like dirt, right after having sex with her, which is nothing new, but suddenly Ryass felt some guilt...which no one is buying..Zach was chased up a tree to give the not so ground breaking lesbians a story...Now, Kendall is being ripped to shreds to give Ryass a story...

Write Stuff. Your post was more promising and more interesting than practically anything I have seen on the show as of late. Nice thoughts.
