Monday
Sami and EJ learn from Dr. Kim that Johnny has retinoblastoma, a form of eye cancer. "I'm afraid we are going to have to surgically remove the eye," Dr. Kim informed the stunned parents. "No, no! You are not taking my son's eye! Okay? This is not happening!" Sami protested. While everyone waited for a second opinion, Sami wished there was something else that could be done, but Ben agreed it was best for the eye to be removed. Sami hated herself for being unaware. "It's all my fault,"she voiced to Rafe. "I'm his mother and I couldn't see that cancer was working on my little boy." Rafe assured Sami there was nothing they could have done differently. Meanwhile, EJ confided in Lexie about Johnny's eye surgery. Lexie wondered if Stefano should be called, and EJ thought they should wait, since he's out of town. Lexie observed that EJ and Sami seem to have mended fences. EJ explained it was only temporary. Later, EJ offered a partial apology for accusing Sami of doing something to Johnny, but he made it clear it wasn't forgiveness. Angry, Sami lashed out and vowed he couldn't keep her from Johnny. Soon after, the diagnosis was confirmed: Johnny needed surgery. Rafe was with Johnny when he awakened and promised he'd recover. Meanwhile, EJ and Sami prepared to tell Johnny the news.
While studying with Gabi, Will got a call from Rafe about Johnny's health. Gabi comforted Will. The two headed straight for the hospital.
Bo was determined to help Hope. He gently informed Carly that he was leaving town for a while and didn't know when he'd return. Carly understood it was because of Hope. Carly thanked Bo for everything and promised to always love him. "I'm really sorry things couldn't be different," shared Bo. When he left, Carly broke down in tears. At the prison, Jane directed Lee to take care of Hope. When Hope tried to defend herself, Lee called a guard to put Hope in restraints. Holding a Christmas stocking containing oranges, Lee dismissed the guard. She raised the bag and struck Hope in the head.
Nicole arrived at the DiMera mansion with Sydney and learned from Mary that EJ had taken Johnny to the hospital. Nicole phoned EJ to check on Johnny and he gave her instructions to have Mary take care of Sydney. Nicole quickly called Brady and announced she was free for the night. Later, Nicole and Brady took advantage of being alone at the DiMera mansion and made wild love in the living room, completely unaware that they were being watched.
Tuesday
Sami and EJ told Johnny that he was having an operation and his eye would be removed. "When do I get it back?" inquired Johnny. "They can't put it back," Sami gently answered. EJ and Sami tried to assure their son that he would be okay, but the boy continued to feel frightened. The tension got to EJ and Sami and they fought over the best way to comfort Johnny. "Stop fighting!" he pleaded. EJ and Sami settled down, for Johnny's sake. Meanwhile, Lexie phoned Daniel and arranged for him to perform the surgery. After Johnny was taken to surgery, Sami fell into Rafe's arms and he soothed her. EJ and Sami had another fight and EJ announced that he would forbid her from seeing Johnny again after the surgery. Lexie reprimanded both of them and insisted their focus should be on Johnny's well being.
Bo disguised himself as a guard and slipped into the prison, where he found a battered Hope. She updated Bo on the warden's misdeeds. Bo decided to break Hope out of the prison, which worried Hope. She didn't want him to risk his own freedom trying to save her. Lee saw them together and became suspicious. Hope knocked out Lee before she could summon a guard. They hid Lee under the covers, and then escaped.
While Nicole and Brady made love in the DiMera living room, they were secretly photographed through a window.
Maggie encountered Victor while dropping off Melanie and Philip's things at the Kirakis mansion. Victor tried to charm Maggie into making up with him and discounted what he did to Vivian. "You didn't jaywalk. You didn't fudge on your taxes. You left a woman in a coffin to die!" Maggie pointed out. Kate overheard them arguing and put on a show for Maggie, acting like she was still attracted to Victor. Annoyed by Kate's performance, Maggie left. Kate commented that Victor's plan to make Maggie jealous might succeed.
Brady, Nicole, Kate and Philip all received texts to meet Victor at the Kiriakis mansion. But when they arrived, Victor claimed he didn't send the texts. They realized Vivian was responsible. Vivian arrived and announced that she was now the majority stockholder of Titan Industries. Vivian promised that she would bring them all down, and leave them with nothing.
Maggie returned to visit Chloe, who updated her on Johnny's cancer. Maggie commented that Sami was strong, but expressed worry about how EJ would weather the crisis.
In surgery, Daniel removed Johnny's eye, but became concerned that the cancer may have spread.
Wednesday
Victor, Philip, Kate, Brady and Nicole were stunned in the wake of Vivian's announcement that she was Titan's majority stock holder. Melanie came in and was surprised to see Viv in the living room. Vivian explained that she was the new CEO of Titan. "Victor, I'm still processing. I am the boss of you," she marveled. Kate and Nicole tried to kick her out, but Vivian pointed out that they were now her houseguests since she owned the house, too. Victor had to excuse himself. Nicole was about to follow, but Vivian asked her to stay so she could share the special revenge he had for her and Kate. Kate was unimpressed. Victor returned and said his lawyers were on it. Philip and Melanie were about to go, but Victor implored everyone to stay put or else it will give Vivian leverage. Vivian tried to lead the group in a Christmas carol, but the enthusiasm was lacking. The party broke up. Viv found Nicole and showed her photos of Nic and Brady having sex behind EJ's back.
At the hospital, EJ, Sami and Rafe waited for word of Johnny's surgery. Lexie went to check on the doctors in the OR. EJ talked to Sami and Rafe about how they would handle things with Johnny going forward. Will came upon them just as EJ was talking about setting "ground rules" and became unglued. Sami calmed him down. Dr. Kim reported that he and Daniel didn't see any signs of the cancer metastasizing. Sami was thrilled; EJ was cautiously optimistic. Sami and EJ went into see their son. She told EJ that Lexie said she could stay over. He said no, it was time for Sami to leave. She pointed out that Johnny needed her, but he didn't care. He threatened to pull out her confession if she tried to get near Johnny. The boy woke up, much to the delight of his parents. Sami offered to read a story to her son, but EJ took it from her and said she should go home to tell Allie, Rafe and Will that Johnny was okay. Sami assured Johnny she would be back and reminded him how much she loves him.... Rafe asked Daniel if Allie should be tested, too. Daniel said yes.... Rafe took a devastated Sami home. She couldn't believe EJ sent her away.
At the prison, Warden Jane took an undercover Jennifer on a tour of the facilities. Jennifer explained she was looking for a job and had a background in journalism. Jane said there was an administrative assistant position available. Suddenly, an alarm went off and the prison went into lockdown. Bo carried an injured Hope out. Trustee Lee came to in Hope's bed. Jane rushed in and asked what happened. Lee revealed that Bo helped Hope escape. They continued the conversation in front of Jennifer, who asked if she could help. Jane asked her to write a press release and include that Hope was armed and dangerous.... Bo carried Hope to an abandoned fishing cabin Shawn used to take him to and put her in the bed. He assured her that he was there for her. "Did you really just bust me out of prison?" she marveled. She was stunned that he carried her the whole way. "I would carry you to the ends of the earth," he assured her. Hope pointed out that Bo should go home while he still could to be there for Ciara. He insisted they would both go home to Ciara when this was all over. Bo went to check around outside. After he left, Hope picked up his phone to make a call
Thursday
Bo found Hope trying to call Ciara and stopped her, concerned that it could reveal their hiding place. Hope struggled to fight back her tears and Bo hugged her. She expressed worry about Bo's life with Ciara and Carly back in Salem. Bo tried to change the subject, but Hope questioned if Carly could forgive him for the recent choices he's made. Bo assured Hope that they would be with Ciara again. As for Carly, Hope sensed that a shift had occurred in Bo and Carly's relationship. Meanwhile, Jane freaked out over Roman's intrusion into the investigation of Bo and Hope's whereabouts. She announced that the State Police were taking over the manhunt. To avoid charges of bias, Roman backed down and promoted Rafe to temporary Police Commander. It was clear that Roman wanted to beat the State Police in finding Bo and Hope. Jane quietly informed Lee that she had friends on the State Police force. She added that when her pals located Bo and Hope, they'd kill them. At the cabin, Bo and Hope feared that someone was lurking outside.
Daniel and Carly went to his apartment, where Adrienne was babysitting Parker. Once alone, Daniel realized Carly was troubled and questioned her. She revealed that Bo left to break Hope out of prison. Daniel comforted Carly when she broke down in tears. Chloe entered and found them in an embrace. Chloe insisted Carly stay with them. Daniel was happy and said he would make Christmas breakfast for them the next morning.
Nicole tried to talk her way out of Vivian's incriminating evidence, but Vivian refused to take the bait. Maggie warned Brady to stay clear of Nicole, but Brady boasted that he could handle her. In a panic, Nicole rushed to the DiMera mansion to find EJ before Vivian made contact with him. Mary updated Nicole on Johnny's condition. At the hospital, EJ was in anguish over Johnny losing an eye and continued to blame Sami. Stefano comforted his son and insisted Johnny would pull through. Alone, Stefano cried that he wished he was in the bed, not his beloved grandson.
Nicole headed for the hospital, where she found Vivian standing with EJ. Vivian tried to show EJ the explosive pics of Nicole and Brady together. However, Vivian realized it wasn't the right time because EJ was too distraught about Johnny. EJ also lashed out at Nicole, who appealed to his emotions. She urged him to open up to her, reminding him how she felt close to Johnny as well as Sydney. For a moment, EJ revealed his vulnerable side to Nicole. Brady arrived at the hospital and found Nicole with her arm around EJ. "What the hell is going on?" he wondered.
Friday
At the hospital, Brady found Nicole and EJ together and tried to hide his dismay. Nicole pretended that she and Brady were on the outs, which gave him the go ahead to blast EJ. However, EJ was in no mood for a fight. He told Brady that Johnny had just had his eye removed. Later, Nicole went to Johnny’s room and found EJ staring down at his sleeping son. Nicole said she was sorry that Brady tried to pick a fight with him. EJ had trouble discerning if Nicole was sincere. Nicole announced that she made her choice: She wanted to be there for Sydney. Nicole added that she cared for Johnny as if he were her own son. Stefano overheard Nicole and warned EJ not believe a word she said. Soon after, EJ cautioned Stefano that Nicole wasn’t a problem, she was a solution. Stefano questioned why EJ still trusted Nicole. EJ responded that the children trusted her and he would prefer that Nicole be with the kids instead of Sami. In another part of the hospital, Nicole showed the incriminating photos to Brady. Nicole recounted that Vivian tried to expose their affair to EJ, but he wasn’t interested in listening. Brady promised to come up with a plan. EJ watched Nicole interact with Johnny and realized her value to the family.
Bo was relieved that the noise outside the cabin was only an animal. He promised Hope to come up with a way to stop Jane and Lee. Hope was resigned that she would return to prison, but Bo disagreed. Rafe interviewed Carly, hoping to help Bo. After the interview, Daniel and Melanie tried to lift Carly’s funk over Bo’s departure. Rafe called Jane and said he wanted to talk to her about Bo and Hope. Jane gave him the brush off.
Philip apologized to Melanie about their living situation, being camped out at Victor’s place. The couple had a passionate encounter and Melanie told Philip that she loved him. Philip and Melanie heard the news about Bo and Hope being wanted criminals. Philip went to the Brady Pub, intent on a talk with Caroline. He saw Stephanie and Nathan, who announced their impending move to Baltimore. After Philip left, Stephanie voiced that the move was the best thing for her and Nathan. Philip visited Chloe and shared the good news about Stephanie leaving Salem.
Jennifer, Julie and Doug pulled out the Christmas ornaments for a traditional Horton family Christmas Eve. The celebration was tempered by Ciara’s Christmas wish, to be reunited with her parents.
