This Cougar's Bite Is Dangerous … to AMCBy Michael Karol Posted: Jul 15, 2009
ALL MY CHILDREN has a (recent) history of making its viewers angry. Fans want a storyline for Aidan; it was bad enough that he was paired with Annie, but now he appears to be little more than adjunct to the Ryan/Zach plot to bring Annie down.
Fans are tired of the focus being on Zach and Kendall and Ryan. Well, that, at least, appears to be ending, but what's taking its place has viewers screaming bloody murder, and I'm inclined to agree with them. Ryan and Erica? Not good.
I'm a longtime AMC fan. Been watching the show since 1982. Never before have I seen such vehemence and anger about a plot — and believe me, the show has done some idiotic things in the recent past (Hello, Zarf! … Un-abortion anyone?).
The main objection to this cougar fantasy: Ryan was recently sleeping with Erica's daughter, Kendall — his ex-fiancée, with whom he fathered one of Erica's grandchildren! This makes Ryan and Erica less a "cougar" duo and more of an incestuous liaison.
We get letters and e-mails. Boy, do we ever. And almost every other one of them is a nauseous reaction to the Ryan/Erica pairing. Since the-powers-that-be don't read our mail, let me do them a favor and share some more adjectives readers have applied to this union: hateful, degrading, puke-worthy, stupid, disgusting and insane.
The worst thing, to a longtime viewer like myself, is what the show is doing to two of its key characters. Erica, as foolish as she has been, had evolved from a silly frivolous youth into a fabulous mother and more mature woman. She fought for her daughters like nobody's business, and that's the cougar-ish side of her we want to see, not a, er, more mature woman lusting after her daughter's last fling. Ryan used to be a solid romantic lead, but in attempting to make him more than that, the show has only succeeded in making him less likable.
Erica belongs with Jackson Montgomery, and everyone but the show's senior staff seems to get that. In ignoring that fact, they're proving they don't know Jack. And that could lead to an unfortunate loss of the one thing the show needs more than anything: viewers.
