B&B’s Alley Mills (Pam) and her husband, Orson Bean (ex-Roy, DH), are prepping for their latest production of A Christmas Carol, which kicks off this weekend at the First Lutheran Church of Venice. The free production has been a labor of love for Bean and his wife for many years.

“Orson did his first adaptation nearly 30 years ago at the Beacon Theatre in New York,” Mills shares. “We’ve been doing it here for about 15 years now. He wrote his own adaptation, which is laced with lots of humor. It stars Orson and many professional actors from The Pacific Resident Theatre, an award-winning theater in Venice, and it features a lot of local kids. Orson said any boy or girl who wanted to be in the show could be in it. Yours truly is running the spotlight and doing makeup, hair and dressing about 40 cast members. CBS graciously loaned us the costumes, which were used on DR. QUINN, MEDICINE WOMAN. I knew exactly where they were because they’re stored right near my dressing room at B&B [laughs]. All the kids in the audience sit up front and we’re doing a special dress rehearsal performance on Thursday, December 11, for children who’ve been in shelters who are now in transitional housing. We have homemade cookies and cider afterwards, courtesy of the sweet women at the church. They also make the children goodie bags with little gifts and treats, which is just so dear.”

Performances of A CHRISTMAS CAROL starring Orson Bean are this weekend on Friday, December 12, and Saturday, December 13, at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, December 14, at 5:30 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church of Venice, 815 Venice Boulevard, Venice, CA 90291. Call the church office at (310) 821-2740 for any questions or go to www.flvenice.org for more information. Admission is free and no reservations are needed but it is recommended to come early. Running time is approximately 70 minutes.
