Could THE MIDDLEMAN be any more fun? I don't see how. The scripts and performances combine to create such a wide-eyed sense of wonder that I would love to see this show on parent network ABC. Perhaps it could lead into the sublime PUSHING DAISIES. But whereas DAISIES is, in effect, a fable come to life, MIDDLEMAN is a comic book come to life.

I have never been much of a cook, and to be honest, I used to skim over the cooking features we did with actors. It was like reading the review of a book on, say, accounting.

What a week last week was. AllI can say thank goodness for cable television and all those channels. I must add that I rarely say that — I often long for the days of rotary telephones and no cell phones or answering machines. (I will say now: I NEVER WANT A BLACKBERRY.) But I digress. Of course, last week we had the Daytime Emmys. Right now there are lots of photos to request from our top notch photo department, lots of things to coordinate. I watched the shows (and blogged about it Saturday morning) so I've commented on that. But be sure to pick up the Soap Opera Weekly that goes on sale July 2 because there will be so many fun pics of all the stars.

The Daytime Emmys tend to be a mixed bag of conflicting material: Juxtaposing kiddie programs with lurid talk fests, game shows and soaps is more mismatched than apples and oranges, but THE 35th ANNUAL DAYTIME EMMY AWARDS turned out to be much more coherent this year, and I believe that is because the children's content was mostly relegated to a taped wrap-up, avoiding mixing Elmo with EJ. Still, "coherent" does not equal "entertaining," and the show was the usual painful mishmash of clips, strained presenter "banter" and winners complaining about not having enough time to thank their fourth cousins and the guy who mowed their parents' lawn when they were kids. In other words, it was an awards show, and no one watches an awards show to be entertained; they want to know who won.

With all the talk about Michael's father Lowell on YOUNG AND RESTLESS of late, it looks like the show might be looking to cast Gloria's drunken, hippy ex in the not-too-distant future.

On with the show... the intro, which showed hosts Cameron Mathison and Sherri Shepherd running back and forth through each other's studios, was adorable. (THE VIEW and ALL MY CHILDREN studios are in the same building.) There were many cute little inside jokes: Joy Behar giving advice to Dr. Phil. The cast of AMC not knowing who Cameron was because they were in character. Barbara Walters' book everywhere.

Hmmm, it seems SWINGTOWN's Susan got religion — literally. She insisted on saying grace before breakfast and attending church. What brought this on? Could be that she saw her husband, Bruce, kissing Sylvia last week and finding a business card with her phone number? Or is it just plain old remorse over dipping her toe into the dating pool of swingers? Yep, that's it: Furious, she tells her husband "Sex has consequences." (And this was a decade before AIDS and the "safe sex" crusades.)

Well, today's the big day! Any one else counting down to the red carpet? Watching the Emmys in New York isn't quite like being right there in the swanky Kodak Theatre in L.A. with all the stars, but I'm still looking forward to tonight's festivities — and the fashion, of course.

Greetings readers,
You're catching us on Emmy day and as much fun as it may be, we're facing a red carpet in record-breaking heat here at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Oh, for those rainy days back at Radio City Music Hall....

Because I watch soaps for a living, I don't look forward to my daily dose of daytime in the same way I did pre-employment at Digest. It's part of my workday, a part I feel blessed to have, but it's not the escape that it once was. I am not complaining, mind you — I am simply making the point that when I do find myself really, really looking forward to a certain show, I notice it.
