By Naomi Rabinowitz Posted: Feb 1, 2011I'm very disappointed with the news that Kyle Lowder (Rick) has been let go from B&B. Aside from him being a talented actor and a nice guy to boot, I think that there was still plenty of potential story for his character.
For starters, I wish we'd seen him interact more with Amber. In the brief scenes that Lowder shared with her portrayer, Adrienne Frantz, they showed some chemistry and their characters — who were twice married — have a long history. Imagine if they'd teamed up to create a third fashion house to rival Forrester Creations and Jackie M? We could've been treated to a lot of fun scenes that honored the past while setting up the next generation of designers on the show.
Then there was Rick's rivalry with Thomas, which was all but ignored when Adam Gregory took over the role from Drew Tyler Bell. Still, it's difficult to forget that Thomas once set Rick's house on fire! That said, Rick definitely should've been involved in the story centered around Thomas's crush on Brooke (Rick's mother) and the "scandal" surrounding their relationship. Not to mention that Taylor, who's been so up in arms over her son, Thomas working with Brooke, was once engaged to Rick! Unfortunately, Rick was never a part of this plot and was actually cordial to Thomas when he helped him with his fashion show.
Finally, I think there could've been some potential for a Rick and Aggie pairing. Lowder and Sarah Joy Brown would physically look attractive together, but more importantly, they'd be a fresh, new couple with story to build. Right now, Nick and Aggie are reasonably happy, but Rick would be a viable obstacle to their relationship. It would also draw in Aggie's rivals, Bridget (Rick's sister and Nick's ex) and Amber. And Rick, who's gone toe-to-toe with Ridge could definitely take on Nick. Just picture these musical guys having a "serenade off" to win Aggie's affections!
In the end, I understand how it can be difficult and expensive to keep every actor around, especially when it comes to a half-hour show. Hopefully, another soap will snatch up Lowder or he'll find success in another venue, like music. I'm confident that we'll be seeing his name again soon, but in the meantime, his Rick will be missed.
